Retro-GAF unite!

I need some advice. I just got a bunch of NTSC Dreamcast games but the jewel cases are really in a bad shape. I can easily find generic replacement clear jewel cases but started to wonder. From a value standpoint, should I just keep the original jewel cases?

AR is good for running PseudoSaturn to run burned backups / translations but there are some compatibility issues when used as a RAM. Getting an OEM one of both the 4mb and 8mb is preferred if you run into the games that have issues with the AR, and they're not that expensive considering the price of a lot of Saturn games these days.

You can get a box of like 100 jewel cases for super cheap these days. I replace broken cases without even thinking about it, just to keep things looking neat. Don't know about value.. but I don't know how you'd verify an original case either.


Those weird "slightly larger" cases that some JP games use are always a problem tho.

Do you have a eBay link for that? Preferably something not from China, I just had something arrive today that took 3 months to travel and pass customs.

I'd really like to replace some super busted PS1 cases, and one of my Saturn cases got a mean crack trying to bring it back from Japan.

I thought at first that was for multi-CD games but then I got a few that used that despite being once CD. Kinda funny, looked like they were trying to seem "special."

Speaking of multi-CD games, the case for my childhood copy of Legend of Dragoon is a total disaster. Are there good replacement cases available for the US-style four-disc games?

My tip for the multi disc cases would be either look at music CD's and find a cheap multi disc CD and swap it.

Also, I look on ebay for sealed ps1 games that are in those type of cases. In fact, I just won an auction for a sealed Syphon Filter 3 for $5. Gonna open it and swap it!

Only very late PAL games and post 98 Japanese games typically use normal CD cases. Nearly 100% of single CD PS1 PAL/NTSCJ games for the first few years use the fat cases.

Multi-disc games used a combo of fat cases and normal double CD cases.
 
retro game related: i posted this in the OT:

i'm playing Space Harrier in Yakuza 0 but i noticed the first stage boss MOOT has a different flight pattern than what i'm used to.

i used to be able to beat him almost as he appears memorizing where he's going be,
but in this version the dragon's movements are wacky. anyone play space harrier in Y0 and notice the same thing?
 
I want to have my 72 pin connector in my NES replaced. Are all the ones on ebay of equal quality? Or does anyone recommend one in particular?

I'm not interested in blinking light win.

I thought Blinking Light Win was generally considered the standard for quality replacements?

From their post in another thread, it isn't quality that is the problem, it is that part of what they want is the feeling/nostalgia of pushing the cart down, which I can understand.

BLW is nice but even my replacement is a bit tight. Not much can be done about that though.

Correct. BLW looks great. But I just want to keep the old-school feel of my system.
 
I just got a boxed copy of MMPR for SNES. I now notice that it doesn't have the Green ranger on the spine like the Genesis version. Therefore, Genesis > SNES just for that. :P

Y'all playing Resident Evil 7? I know it might be considered sacrilege to bring up a game that released this week in the Retro-GAF thread, but this game is very old-school Resident Evil inspired. I'm only a couple hours in (Playing an hour at a time as it's mentally exhausting in VR!), but so far I've read files, collected statuettes to unlock doors, rotated figurines to create the right shadow on the wall, backtracked, stored items in an item box...

For all the worry people had before the game came out, it really does feel a lot like the old games! The first major boss fight was also quite the challenge, having to figure out the right order of events in order to not be killed quite quickly.
 
i've been playing a lot of space harrier in Y0 =) keeping the retro roots going.
M2 added scanlines. surprised at the detail they put into it..

i think i will play outrun next.

Kind of, it depends on the difficulty. On Easy, the game as checkpoints that overwrite your game every time you hit one. On Normal, the checkpoints are there, but you can only continue from them when you die, otherwise you have to make it to a Save Room and use a Cassette Recorder to save your game. On the hardest difficulty, Madhouse, there's no checkpoints, only the Cassette Recorders, and you can only save if you have a cassette in your inventory. So the hard difficulty is basically back to Typewriter & Ribbon like the originals.

Playing REmake for the first time (I finally have a working copy for GCN) and....

... I keep dying at the first encounter with a zombie. I have no idea how to kill this thing. I clearly don't know how to play.

Any basic tips for someone who's never played survival horror before? To my surprise, I actually have no problems with the tank controls other than the slowness by which the main character moves. Turning corners and everything feels fine and I totally dig the movie-like perspective on the action.

Also, does it matter who I start the game with? I started with Jill.

You don't kill them, you run around. Only kill when you are trapped or trying to secure a frequently accessed area (like near save spots) or else you will run out of ammo constantly.

And yeah the tank controls are crucial. Any game with fixed camera angles should have them.
 
Jill's the easier of the two characters (has two more slots to carry items), so probably good that you're playing as her.

For the first zombie, you can actually run back to the dining room, and Barry will take it out in a cutscene, saving you a few bullets. Otherwise, you just have to shoot the zombies over and over until they die.

There's a few advanced strategies as well, such as using the knife. You can shoot a zombie a few times until they fall over, then equip your knife and get a few slashes in before they get back up. You can also play around and start to learn how/when they lunge in order to get knife slashes in without them grabbing you.

Every once and a while, you'll randomly score a headshot, which will blow the zombie's head clean off with one bullet. Once you get a shotgun, you can do this much easier by waiting for the zombie to be in very close, then aiming up and pulling the trigger.

Whenever possible, try to keep zombies alive. If you kill every zombie, you're going to run out of bullets. Plus, you'll notice that most zombie bodies stay on the screen as you backtrack around, maybe remember where the "dead" ones are too...
 
REmake is also the hardest Resident Evil game, so if you complete that one, know that the rest of the series is not as difficult, with the exception of maybe Code Veronica, which has a couple of bosses that you can screw yourself over on if you haven't stockpiled certain weapons.

I have also been finding RE7 hard to play in VR at points, but that's a trade off: boss fights can be difficult in VR as they move so quickly, but sneaking around can be easier, as you can peer around corners with ease and get a better idea of where enemies are.

Really? IMO, Veronica is far less forgiving due to its size and inventory restrictions.
