Retro Studios working on fucking Donkey Kong

DKCR returns sold well cause there were 100 million wiis sitting around people's houses and the nostalgia factor kicked in, it is not what the wiiu needed to sell consoles. The last thing the wiiu needed was another 2d side scroller. Know what else sold a shit ton ??? New super Mario brothers Wii and how is that sequel selling consoles for Nintendo??

I'll tell you why. We've had NSMBU, in september Rayman Legends, and even the new 3D World mario has the 2D/3D design and there is also Sonic World.

Why the hell do you waste one of your better internal studios in terms of game and graphic design in another 2D platformer when you have this genre already covered? Why not release games that cover other genres?
I can't believe Nintendo is THAT stupid!

Its like Microsoft with the FPS, but this time it's one company making always the same games... and a company that doesn't have 3rd party support to at least compensate that!

stupid? DKCR sold a truckload of copies while Metroid can barely be called a success. Making a sequel is the opposite of stupid

Disappointed on who's helming this, but the game will be great once the tears stop flowing

I'm thinking this is more of an issue with the franchise. Since nonone complained about three metroids from Retro.

The only fucking western company that could pull great stuff for us and they put them working on DK again. Not wonder some people left. How could you fuck this up Nintendo. Retro and DK again? DKCR was great, I loved it, but don't make fucking Retro work on it, I'm sure there's enough teams capable of doing a DK game. Ffs... at least I have X. Thanks.

You know what other Western Nintendo company made several great DK games? Rare.

Lol there's been three fucking Metroid Primes done by Retro, this is only their second DKCR.

I vastly prefer DKC to MP. This is all reeks of "Nintendo isn't doing mature games" bullshit.

For me personally I think it's wasting their talent. We know Nintendo makes good platformers. They have several internal teams that make good platformers. Why then have Retro make yet another one of those?

I'm sure this game is gonna be great, but I was hoping Retro would be put on a more daring project.

My, that game had horrible sales and reception in the NES. Why people think that by some kind of miracle it'll be relevant and sells millions this day? Let's face it it's a franchise that's irrelevant now.

The first game actually did well enough that for a long while it was remembered and fondly at that. The SECOND game is the one that fucked it all up by being a quick cash in during the dying throes of the NES while the SNES was out with fucking Super Metroid at the time.

Game will be grate just like the first one and I have no issue with the Donkey Kong ip but I wanted something more substantial than another 2d platformer from Retro. It seems like 2d platformers are all Nintendo makes nowadays.

That's exactly how I feel. There are enough games like this already coming to Wii U. The system is fucking swamped with mascot platformers.

And also, I'm a huge metroid fan, and have never enjoyed Donkey Kong games.

Would have been much better resource management to assign a hungry young developer on DKC to work with the solid foundation laid by Retro Studios, and have Retro work on a next-gen revival of a franchise like Metroid or... Metroid. Fucking Metroid man, where is it? Seriously.

Nope, they could have showed Star Tropics with a cartoony style and I'd be salivating for it.

I don't need another DKC game so soon. They should be spreading that shit out every 5 years like they do with most other games, not release them back to back. It's the same problem with NSMB, too many too soon. It gets tiresome.

Another DKC game "so soon?" 3 years is "so soon?"

Would have liked Metroid, but I'm fine with DK. They did it right last time, so let's see what they'll do this time.

Please no weird motion controls

DKCR was pretty fantastic. I don't see why people are disappointed by this news. It's a great series!

I doubt people think this will be bad. These are separate discussions that I don't think people understand.

When most people in this thread are "disappointed" it's NOT because they think this will be bad. It's because it isn't exciting. It's boring and safe. It will probably be a great game, but it's not a game I'm looking forward to playing.

Edit: Added an important word int here.

Why didn't Nintendo revelead this in 2012? Why they got so secretive about this? WTF! If this was a new IP, fine, but a new DK? I don't get Nintendo's logic. They look so dumb.

I don't like the idea that making a great platformer is a waste. It's not like Nintendo and Retro (or Rare in the past) made carbon copies of each other's platformers.

They have their personal touch, it matters to me.

I'm guessing because of DKCR 3DS.

The WiiU just needs games to sell, and DKCR2 will almost certainly be a great game. Nintendo probably sees it as more viable right now too, coming of a successful wii version and 3ds re-release.

Maybe it's not as exciting as a new metroid or something, but I love the DKC series.

DKCR was pretty fantastic. I don't see why people are disappointed by this news. It's a great series!

I think it has more to do with the fact that we hoped they were working on something different. We just had DKCR 3D released, and Nintendo is too scared to do anything new, so we just have the same type games coming out. I'm tired of Nintendo doing this man. I miss the days when they weren't tied down to the same formula for years. When they were the innovators. Now they just release MK, NSMB, and Smash. At least let Rare do something different man, they at least deserve that.

I do think people need to get it through their head once and for all that Monolith Soft is a valid first party Nintendo studio and X shows Nintendo "is willing to commit to a huge HD game".

Having said that...

... a DKCR sequel from Retro so soon is definitely playing things too safe. People are losing their shit over the "insult" of Super Mario 3D World right now, even though I don't think it was very surprising at all. 3D Land has become a big seller and found a balance for 3D Mario most people are willing to accept.

But with a game like that in development and the Yoshi platformer, this does seem like a bad time to put Retro on a similar game. If Retro has two full teams now, things could end up different anyway. But I would agree this is likely a mistake in terms of the big picture.

The problem is that this game seems like Nintendo's DmC - not what anyone asked for, even if by itself it represents a high quality, well-made game.

Heh, if I didn't know better I'd be presuming that Retro are an awful developer from some of the earlier posts.

Sure, it's disappointing that they're not doing something new but this looks great!

On one hand, DKCR is easily Retro's best game. On the other, we haven't had a Metroid release since 2010.

The only Donkey Kong release was been DKCR3D, so it's not like they've been cranking those out either.

Donkey Kong Country Returns came out in 2010, people - by the time this one comes out it'll have been 3-4 years. In 2010 Nintendo released Other M (which was shit and sold like shit) and DKCR (which was amazing and sold amazing) - what would YOU invest your money in?

My, that game had horrible sales and reception in the NES. Why people think that by some kind of miracle it'll be relevant and sells millions this day? Let's face it's a franchise that's irrelevant now.

That was just an example.
The point is I'd rather they work on a different game than DKC because that was the last game they made.

With everything we have heard this just doesn't add up.

Am I the only thinking we are missing something? Not necessarily a second game but that something else is going on?

DKCR rated around a 9 average. It sold more than all 3 Metroid games, combined. That's around 6 million copies. They made 3 Metroid games in a row, and somehow this surprises you? It had the sales, it had the reviews. Why wouldn't they make another one.

You guys... you guys.

All I was thinking of during the Nintendo Direct was 'don't be Retro, don't be Retro, don't be Retro'.

I don't mind another Donkey Kong game. I liked the Returns. But couldn't someone else do it?

People need to realize something:

Look at the sales numbers of the last DKCR game and then look at the sales of the last Metroid game.

THAT'S why Retro was working on DKC.

For what it's worth, I don't think Retro should've been working on a new Metroid or a new DKC. Something more original and ambitious.

Retro Metroid or....I dunno new IP was what I wished for. Ninty fairy did not grant it.

That's okay since DKCR is one of the greatest platformers of all-time.

People are just mad that it's not "omg dark mature."

Oh come on, really? You really think that?

I would've preferred that Retro work on a new Star Fox game. Or Metroid. Or even a new IP. That they're working on Donkey Kong isn't too much of a problem, but the Wii U is already well served by platform games this year and next. NSMB U, the Luigi title, Mario 3D, Rayman, Sonic... probably more I'm missing. So it's just really disappointing, considering what Retro is capable of. They could make a new 3D game really pushing the Wii U's visuals, but no - 2D Donkey Kong in a market saturated in platformers. A game they've already done. In fact, it was the last game they've done.

Disappointing.

this seriously pissed me off.

DKCR was a great game, but jesus christ, they take a studio who could do something big for them and trap them on the series. if it works once, it'll work twice... three times. i'll buy the game, but it even felt like i was being cheaply fan serviced into spending money... and im one of the fans. good lord.

Metroid is steadily returned in Japan, in Sakamoto's hands. For the better, I dare to say. Please look for E3 2014 Direct for Metroid V.

Seeing there is a lack of hardcore platformers, without hesitation I would choose DK.
Was so pleased with DKCR the news of Retro making a new one pleases me even more.

A lack of platformers on the Wii U? I can't even address the hardcore portion of your statement because I dont know what the hell it means.

It all makes sense now, Mario U, Luigi U, Rayman, Kirby and Yoshi are for the children while DKC is for the hardcore. Got it.

The problem isn't that DCKR is getting a sequel.

The problem is that Retro is making it.

The game looks great but I too feel like this is a massive waste of opportunity. Retro Studios is one of the few Nintendo teams that is extremely capable of making a game that appeals beyond the typical Nintendo fan/audience and that's what they really need now.

So I'm disappointed as well BUT...

A lot of people in this thread seem to think making a good platformer takes no effort at all which is like..so fucking dumb i dont even-

I get being bummed-I'm fucking bummed too!-but stop with that shit.

Beat me to it.

A new DK should be a blast, but it feels like a waste for a team that has proven it can remix old IPs into new ideas. I also think that the this entire direct was retreading 100% of the old ground, which adds to the disappointment.

I loved DKCR and I will love this one as well but... I would have preferred Metroid or a different revival. I see why they went with this but it's disappointing nonetheless.
