Oh, she's not "unconventionally attractive." Just unattractive. Call it what it is. I don't think it matters either way, but Sucker Punch can't possibly be unsure of why people question their intentions.

The bigger problem is why the gameplay looks like it's on autoplay. It just looks like a bad game, full stop.

Basically the game is a ray of light for ugly people. Actually I give them a little credit for trying to address it instead of, hey here's some uggos, like Insomniac is doing.

Shadows & Yotei seem to have one thing in common - a lot of the shitstorm could've been easily avoided if the studio listened to what type of a playable hero people want. Just like Naoe could carry Shadows as a singular protagonist, having a second game with Jin would've been a solid pick here.

To answer your question, this mainly plagues western film lately. And if you notice, the Turkish, Indian, Chinese or Japanese, etc., actresses they hire for the (funded) cameos or roles in western film, are still classically beautiful more often than not. Those places don't practice the mind virus.

To be honest, Erika Ishi is not a good choice as Atsu, regardless that the image of the protagonist they want to portray is a victim of tragedy and hardships in life. Shioli Kutsuna, the actress who plays the character Rainy in Death stranding 2 could have been the perfect choice as Atsu. I still think there is a hidden motive or agenda why they chose Erika.

I'm cool with a character looking "average/regular", because whether a character is hot or not doesn't mean much to me. That said, I do get annoyed where a character is made "ugly" or "hot" just for the sake of a political statement.

I don't think her being "ugly" makes it any more believable. Kinda weird the devs are saying it what helped her to survive, whereas I would think a pretty female warrior would have a better chance because men would go easy on her and underestimate her.
