Revolution CPU (Broadway) update rumor...sorry if old

I thought it was confirmed that all 3 companies are spending roughly the same amount in R&D for the new systems. I'm not sure, but I thought all 3 companies spent 350 million for the next gen systems. This was posted in this forum a few months ago, if I remember correctly. Microsoft and Sony will obviously spend much more on Marketing.

Sony are spending a lot more than $350m surely? The Cell afterall is not just for Playstation but for their other consumer electronics as well. The rumour was that Nintendo and Microsoft were the ones spending a very similar amount on their chips. Can't remember if it was for both the CPU & GPU together or either of them individualy.

we only know that they GPU budgets were similar.. and it wasnt a rumor. it was in an ati conference call.

They have the same GPU budget as Microsoft, releasing a year later, and still can't get it to do HD?

In another thread you guys were saying that both Nintendo and MS had the same amount of budget for their GPU, and now you're saying the same thing about the CPU.

YOU GUYS ARE IDIOTS!

*sigh*.. just because the budgets are the same.. doesnt mean that the chips will be similar. ati was careful to mention that both companies had vastly different priorities and such.. MS wanted 'HD era' stuff.. and Nintendo is probably looking for a more efficient/cheap design. Similar R&D budget doesnt mean the chips will cost the same..

Then the question is, what are they paying for?
I'll repeat a comparison I've made before. It's like Microsoft going for a Hummer, while Nintendo is more interested in a vehicle with great gas mileage.

That ars article has some massive misconceptions about performance characteristics/requirements of console software.
That said, the notion that CPU might be PPE based is plausible enough - but if Nintendo's really looking for simplicity/higher single thread performance, I hope for their sake they are using something else.

SCE engineer dedicated to clipping hardware decisions: Listen mr.game.dev, we are sorry, but if your tree-trunk search simulation for your cars' driving model is not easy to implement on the PPE, I guess your cars will have to actually turn now.

:P

Just kidding Faf :D.
