Rhapsodia (Suikoden Tactics) official thread

YAY! Sounds awesome and the main character has pants and he doesn't look like a 10 year old girl. A little dissapointing that it doesn't follow the storyline of Suikoden 1-3, but I suppose they want to try and move some more Suikoden 4's.

Is it known if it plays like Fire Emblem or more like Ogre Battle?

Christ those screens look like a freeware korean MMORPG. After III and IV, I don't have much hope left for the franchise... but I'm willing to be surprised.

How Suikoden has fallen. :\

You sure that goat thing is a guy? Looks girlish on the cover. Although, I'd be afraid to judge from a picture in this series...

A girlish goat guy holding the protagonist dearly would be a bit pushing it.(maybe they'll make the protagonist effeminate through char. development...)

Suikoden IV was one of the worst sequels/games ever, it's so bad it seems I've blocked it from my memory, for I can't even recall what happened to the protagonist at the end. Seeing the gphx, and knowing it's connected to the POS suikoden iv has left little hope in me for this project.

I am playing Suikoden III and it rocks, I have fallen in love with Suikoden. I can't wait to for this.

The goat girl is really fucked up, I hope she dies in the game.

"Komuta: Seneca also acts like a sister, so please pay attention to that.
Kawano: In anxious and uneasy situations, Seneca somehow lightens up the situation. She's an essential member of the party."

Anyone else get the impression shes not gonna live through the game from those comments?

I dunno, those videos didn't inspire much hope in me. Sure the graphics looked fine in motion but it seems like you'll be spending a lot of time watching the enemies move one at a time...slowly.

Bebpo, I expect you to import this so I get good impressions from a reliable source. If you do not, I will be forced to be mad.

Yeah, I'll be there for better or worse.

I just saw the Furballs video from IGN, which was quite surprising. We get to see the hero from 4 WITH voice hehe.. I saw the rest too, and this is another game I have to have in my collection. I'll probably import the US version though, mainly because of the import function, IF that is still intact of course...

Looks great, can't wait to play it..

Just came out today at my store... didn't get it.. want it.. but in English I guess...

It's much better than a 7.3, just for the battle and skill system alone. But I dunno, it's an SRPG with long slow battes and people tend not to like those.

But Disgaea got 8's and 9's and that game is the most overwhelming SRPG I've ever fucking played!

Errr, N1 S-rpgs don't have slow long battles. They have 10-20 min maps.

Games like Front Mission, Suikoden Tactics, Namco x Capcom have maps that take 45mins->2 hours. Reviews don't tend to favor those slow playing games.

Hey, I found a deal on this game - Outpost is taking orders for $39.99 + free shipping. If you don't have a Fry's I would jump on that.

What makes the battles slow in Rhapsodia? Are there a lot of slow/nonskippable animations, or is there just a lot to take care of on the map?

Animations are really short and enemies move decently fast. But what makes it long is that the maps are usually QUITE BIG at least compared to how many spaces your characters can move in one turn. Also since you can die really easy if you're not careful you play a lot of cat & mouse with the cpu to try to lead them out so you can gang up on them and not them ganging up on you.

The thing is the AI is either really smart or just really fucking random because unlike 99% of SRPGs out there...they don't run after you necessarily. A lot of times they'll just wait you out until you come to them...especially with boss characters. At times this is good because then you can take out all the regular enemies before even dealing with a boss, but it just makes the battles longer.

Also enemies come in mid-battle A LOT. So you think you're almost finished and then a new group comes in on the other side.

Also you're usually dealing with a ton of characters. 6-12 on your side and 12-25 on their side.

All these factors combine to make battles about 30mins to an hour. They aren't incredibly long, but they do take same time. Plus you have to spend like 20-30mins between battles spending skills points and money wisely so you are ready for the next battle. Basically figure about an hour for battle+prep and then 15-20mins for non-story leveling battles. If you rush the game it's maybe 25 hours for the 21 chapters. But for me I'm gonna be around 35 hours when I finish.

sounds pretty good, up to par with japanese SRPGs, and well above par with japanese SRPGs released in the US. :)
I will be picking this up tomorrow.

Can you save during battles? That'd be pretty useful if they can last longer than an hour....

I'm tempted to try this game(I mean after all this is suikoden we are talking here). but I'm playing 3 strategy games at the moment and I'm seriously burned out of strategy games.

I picked it up - I broke with form and got a gutted and stickered copy at EB, but it was their last one and I managed to get all the crap off without a trace, so it's all good. They tell me if I bring in the receipt within 14 days when they have the guide, it'll be 20% off. Score.

I listened to the soundtrack on the way home. It's very short - just 13 brief tracks, under a half-hour total - but very good. I think it's miles ahead of the Shin Megami Tensei soundtracks, which generally sound like they're being played into a Coke can. I particularly enjoyed the marches, especially track 2 which spends most of its duration in 5/4 time. I can't say that it approaches the level of the great classical composers who have spoiled me so much, but it's high-quality stuff. None of it is orchestrated, though - it's all (decent) MIDI.

Liking the music, liking the refrences to Suikoden 4... generally liking the game :D (forum not shocked)

But I have a freakin 15 page term paper due next friday.. crap!

Got it, still fairly early on, was interesting to see the prestories for some characters that showed up in Suikoden IV. In either case, i'm not terribly impressed yet, this seems like rather standard SRPG fare so far. And the story bores me to death. But I'm okay with that as long as I can get some cool characters later on.

I just finished the first major battle. The first time through, I rushed whoever was nearest. Of course, I got creamed resoundingly. There were still four enemies left on the map when I lost for good. Second time through, I sat back and packed all my characters together in a tight little bundle while the NPC ally pirates took care of most of the enemies. And they did a really good job at it - one of them got wiped out, but the rest fought brilliantly. When the last pirate was down to his last legs, I sent my whole party after Sigurd. I was doing 1, 2 damage - the only thing that reversed it was when I had a character use a lightning spell on him, which stunned him so that I could then easily take him down with just one more blow. Elementals are huge in this game.

uh lots of SRPGs are like that, where there is an element of permanent character death. In fact, i'm assuming you've played previous Suikoden games, but there was permanent character death in those games as well (although it was a low chance of occuring during the sim battles).

No big deal to me, it only makes the scenarios more difficult, and more difficult = win!

Well, it's not the best SRPG I've ever played, or the most engaging - Growlanser II gets that honor. But it's damn close, and I think the battle system is even a little bit better. The AI is certainly superior. The only major beef I have with Suikoden Tactics so far is that the voice acting is very bad, and even if you turn it off, the game will still need to do a disc access to display the next piece of text (prompting bad flashbacks to Shining Tears). It's worth the annoyance, though, because the story really is a lot more palatable without the voice "actors" making nonsense out of it.

50% of the reason i will like an SRPG is if the turn order is ala Fire Emblem or not.
I mean, all my characters and then all the ennemies. I have when it's some stats that decides my turn like a speed stat of something.

So what's up with Rapsodia? It is party turn after party turn?

Nope, speed stat. They get all jumbled up.
