Ridge Racer DS - Gamespot review

Wario64

works for Gamestop (lol)

6.6

"It's safe to say that a lot of the players that are at least thinking about picking up Ridge Racer DS never actually played Ridge Racer 64 back on the N64, and even those players will most likely think that some of the gameplay mechanics and design work in Ridge Racer DS are from another time. It simply doesn't feel like a modern game, and while it may be a decent remake of an older game, it doesn't stand up to today's standards especially well. Even though players will get a kick out of the game's ludicrous take on drifting, Ridge Racer DS has too many flaws to stand out from the pack. "

Looks like it's better than the PSP version!...

AOI AM CRY

i was holding out for this too, after passing on Asphalt. i'm still on the fence though, considering this is only one review and i never read any horrid reviews of the 64 version. How does the RR64 gameplay rank among other RRs?

Aoi, it gets hate. but RR64 PLAYED LIKE RIDGE RACER. It has the same game play mechanics and even used tracks from the first two games. AI is obviously another story blah blah blah.

I am wondering how RR PSP will "play" any differently. It's still going to have the same "ludicrous" drifting system, just now WITH TEH NOS.

Still buying RRDS. Whether or not I keep it after I get a PSP is another story. :)

RR on the PS' has that 'automated drift system' they mention in the review of the DS version? I've never seen it described that way before.

Seriously, did someone actually say this was going to be better than the PSP version?

The PSP version could still suck, the only reason it's "better" right now is because it has good graphics.

Look what you just did! BTW is the PSP version going to have the same maps? :P Also I think most of the complaints seemed to be centered on the control and that the maps just aren't as fun to play as they used to be. From what I've read, the PSP version is gonna have better graphics, better control, better sound, and new stages to race on! Sounds much more intriguing than a cut and dry port...!

The score is too high. Ridge Racer has always sucked and I doubt the DS version somehow improves on earlier versions.

Welcome to SEGA's world NINTENDO... I seriously cannot believe they released this hardware...

They should apologize to all purchasers and buy them back... with the promise to create a next-generation hand-held...

It's also better because it's not a port of the horrible RR64.
It's also better because it's not being made by NST; it's being made by Namco.
It's also better because it doesn't force you to use a singular lame drift styles.
It's also better because of the graphics.
It's also better because...

...I think you get the point.

RRPSP might still suck, no doubt, but in this one instance... I think PSP wins. By a lot. :P

The only thing that could sabotage the PSP version of Ridge Racer in my mind is the handheld's poor control mechanism - a question that plagued the DS RR prior to release, too. I really wonder whether Namco could screw up a traditional-style RR game. I'm sure it will be at least as good, if not better than, most of its console counterparts, barring control issues, and that's pretty damn good.

But I LIKED Ridge Racer 64 a lot, though only paying $10 for it was a nice bonus. I'll get them both, but I find it hard to believe DS > PSP. For this series. With the first set of releases.

I appreciate your concern, but I'm rather enjoying my DS for everything it does.

Yes because nintendo is responsible for shitty ports.

From what I've read the analog nub on the PSP works surprisingly well with Ridge Racers.

Sorry... I am just a graphics whore... I would love to buy a Nintendo DS if it had PSP graphics...

I am not buying any more X-Box games until PS3 or X-Box 2... I just have no time...

Well, in this case they are.

But seriously, a Ridge Racer is bound to suck regardless of how it looks. There's a reason why Namco is releasing Ridge Racers on the PSP at launch instead of the PS2.

Sorry but... What is this game? Is it a clear port of Ridge Racer 64? Was it developed by NST? Namco? Why is the bottom screen so butt ugly?

So many questions, so many unanswered questions... (I am too lazy to look for answers though)

Yes, it's a clear port of RR64. Yes, it's developed by NST. It's butt ugly because it's supposed to be used as a steering wheel but reportedly fails on every conceivable level.

Questions answered.

ridge racer 64 sucked and presumably still sucks, but that review is an egregious broadside against ridge racer generally. it "doesn't feel modern?" if "modern" is the systematized boredom of gran turismo or pop-immersed ea mediocrity, then make mine archaic. gamespot sux.

I think it's safe to say that Nintendo rushed the launch of Nintendo DS. There are absolutely no interesting games ready for launch...

That review pretty much sums up why I love RR64. Because it isn't a modern racer.

And to all the haters, you can suck it. If I see you out and about I'll just kick you in the nuts. Or I'll just beat you in a game of Metroid Hunters. Either way.

Feel the Magic says your wrong. Plus the Mario minigames show potential.

Feel the Magic is probably right, but there's not enough AAA titles IMO... I had enough of minigames! I'm waiting Warioware Touched! to fill my void, but I expect complete, well-produced and interesting games...

I actually think Ridge Racer DS is a lot worse than that. Even if you like Ridge Racer.

DFS.

It is possible for NST to make a port of their own game worse?! What issues are you talking about?

No. What you're really trying to say is that you hate me. Why don't you tell me how you really feel?

Obligatory RAGE RACER >>> RR Type 4 and RR5 sucks! post.
RRV does suck. And Rage Racer IS the best. Was there any question? And R4 was saved by the story mode and great music.

where the fuck is my rolleyes.
It's right here. In the form of hot steaming piss.

PSP isn't released on our shore yet, so piss away!

Doesn't excuse DS games from mostly being mediocre or in most cases, shit.

Blame it on early software or go back to pretending you're having fun with Mario64x4. :)

You've got to be shitting me...

Ridge Racer V stands along with Outrun 2 as the best arcade racer this gen...

:lol

Do what Nintendo fans can't do, just ignore! :lol

PSP has a new Ridge Racer and new Metal Gear game at launch mmmm sexay! :D

Wrong again! Open your mouth!

NO. So average it's not even worth mentioning. They had the chance to build upon R4 but failed.

Blame it on early software or go back to pretending you're having fun with Mario64x4.
Well, 140 Stars and hours of multiplayer under my belt I have this to say: Pretending IS fun.

AKKKK!!! Nintendo rushed the fuck out of the DS!!

there is no excuse for how bad RRDS looks, it could look at least twice that good (Asphalt looks great in motion and never slows, it could even look better)!!!

I love my DS ... and honestly a Portable Mario 64 is AMAZING, worth the purchase, but Nintendo better get some AAA titles out soon!

Here's hoping that they have something up their sleaves

IAWTP

edit: and ridge racer v is closely associated with the ps2 launch, so it's been politicized, so it'll never be discussed fairly. it's a great game on its own merits.
