People usually don't know such detail about jpeg that red color compresses worst in it. From his picture it also looks like macroblocking around the red text matches up the macroblocking of the rest of the picture around it. I think it's a legit picture. He probably used his memory injection trick to change the text while the console is running or something along those lines.lupinko said:

Make sure that your art team understands that jpeg macroblocking will always be perfectly parallel and vertical, regardless if the contents of the compressed image are on an angle or not.filopilo said:

Unsure. The fact that he used red for the modified text just makes it harder to tell if it's modified or not. Elsewhere I saw a chunk of this image being tossed in the jpg 'error level analyser': the text in question glowed bright, but at the same time the tool mentions that the color red is going to show up brighter no matter what.

Part of the problem is that the compression blocks eat up lower portion of the red text on the right side, making it look progressively more angled/curved as it goes, but that's not really the case.filopilo said:

I think you're confused. That's what he's said he's done. Unless you know something beyond what's on his blog, the rest of us haven't seen anything. As I said earlier, I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt -- if he manages to show himself running unsigned code, I'm willing to believe he did it via gameOS. Showing us a few badly compressed jpegs that raise more questions than they answer doesn't really cut it.

Anyway , JPEGsnoop sees a photoshop 3.0 compression signature and is positive on the editing.
The clear rectangular cut in the compression around the text is also really suspicious.
But the wrong angle is more than enough for me to make my own opinion.

There's many homebrew applications that are quite useful that not piracy related, from custom themes to other widgets and other apps.

Nah, I'd like to see this happen. I want a better media server out of my PS3, custom themes etc. If it happens it happens I guess. Not going to lose sleep over it. This thread is entertaining though.

I thought we already knew he could write to hypervisor memory? All he's done is change a text string, and a colour value.
