Rings of Power Season 2 Trailer Released

I rather liked this weeks episode. I sort of liked their explanation on how the dwarven rings worked. Tolkien just saod it helped to become richer but being able to see the veins made sense.

Really enjoyed Sauron's name dropping of first age men who helped as a way of trying to convince Celebrimbor

I haven't seen the last two episodes, but yea that sounds like a good way to show that.

Good 15 minutes of content in episode 5. Galadriel and Adar scenes were fine. Rest = snoozefest.

Someone should edit the filler out of each season and cut the good bits into a 2 hour movie.

I really love the Sauron/Annatar stuff. Since I started reading the books I wanted more of Sauron because all we really got in the movies was pretty much next to nothing.

The hobbit stuff is slow and boring. It was cool to see Tom but he is definitely not how I imagined him from the books. The wizard dude HAS to be Gandalf after that line from Tom. Just hurry up and confirm it. If this "mystery" drags on into S3 then fuck that lol. Do something interesting with Gandalf/Nori ffs!

The Pharazon dude and the little Joffrey dude better fuck off or die.

I'm not up to date on the lore of Middle Earth and I know the Balrog appears in the movies but I hope it appears again in the show to fuck shit up then goes for a nap until Pippin wakes it up :messenger_grinning_squinting:

As you can tell I don't think the show is perfect but I am overall enjoying it. S2 is an improvement for sure. Hopefully the haters dont get it cancelled. I love LOTR and Tolkien is one of my favourite writers but I am not obsessing over every detail. I'm just taking the show as it is and enjoying it.
If Tolkien is one of your favorite writers I don't understand how you can support this. This has fractionally little to do with his work.

You're not "up to date" with the lore? But.......

🤔

I don't believe you.

Well, because some other person in my house wanted to watch this, I ended up watching it. My thoughts after four episodes - and I will be including some light spoilers so if you don't want to read that please don't continue - just a friendly warning:

    • The writing is far better than season one, especially the dialog, but I get that that's not saying much. Though they still do the thing where they drop a bit of dialog from the movies and expect the watchers to be dazzled and do the Leonardo pointing at screen gif reaction

    • Though the writing overall is much better, there's still some silly shit and massive departures from the actual source at times. For example, they visit the Barrow Downs although they're not in the correct location. Then the barrow wights arrive and the entire ensuing scene is like something out of a PS3/X360 video game

    • Galadriel by the end of episode one is actually acting and speaking far more like her true version from the books and movies. She is even dressed like herself 90% of the time. She is no longer acting like a petulant teenager. She even reasonably reacts to Elrond a few times when he has to put her in her place. You can tell that the writers really took the massive criticism of the unlikable and weird version of her that they wrote in season one. She is also not the lead character, at least in the four episodes I watched. She is merely part of the ensemble now

    • Gandalf is acting about 80% like Gandalf. I actually warmed to this actor in the role quite a bit

    • After a few episodes of boring listless and downright stupid fuckery with the character, the true Sauron, The Deceiver, finally shows up. And it does not disappoint. They finally go hard and real with him. I think at least one writer at least read a few paragraphs from the Silmarillion or some other lore book / wiki

    • The harfoot companions are more funny and much better written. They're basically just hobbits now

    • The production values are way, way better. The interiors look authentic and really put together. In season one they looked like incomplete productions from some Volume shots. I really can't stress this enough - they look so much better. The outside shots are amazing now as well, especially the sweeping vistas. It's like they doubled the budget in this department

    • Speaking of production values, I am pretty sure they hired some new and more experienced directors of photography because the general filming of the show is far better. It no longer looks like a CW show at times, or at any time, now

    • Ents show up, and man, they look amazing and are voice acted well though their scene felt too overly sentimental - though it should entertain book readers

    • The fight scenes feel modern and well put together. In season one it felt like watching some early-to-mid 2000's action movie whenever it was busy time. Now the fight scenes are genuinely good for the most part. The black elf guy in particular straight rips ass open when he gets down

    • Tom Bombadil actually makes an appearance, and it's rather significant. While the actor looks and sounds the part, and they make a really valiant effort, the entire thing feels like a letdown. They do the whole cryptic thing, you can hear Goldberry singing with him at one point, he's clearly powerful and the oldest, but it just didn't come together for me. Basically when I saw him I was like "oh shit, finally!", and then five minutes later I was like "OK maybe this was a bad idea"

    • The story in Numenor remains an absolute unentertaining mess
    [*]
So despite all of the improvements I highlighted in my marathon of a post, the show only reaches the level of "mid". I think it's now watchable but with several really eye rolling scenes or bits of dialog. There's still some parts where what the characters are doing makes no sense. But it's like a solid 6/10 now, unlike the 2/10 season one was. In my humble opinion.

Don’t think you need to hide that behind spoiler tags BadBurger BadBurger , just note the episodes covered at the start of the post. It’s aired TV so that’s the standard approach. Thanks for your impressions.

In the future I'll do that. I just can't remember exactly when each thing went down in what episode.

heh heh, no shame in admitting you watched it. I'm gonna do the same, just waiting for the whole season to drop so I can power through it. It's a landmark show, even if you HATE what they did to the lore, you really gotta watch it because it's so unique.

Of course, I would have said the same for Wheel of Time but wow, did that second season just flop like a wet fart. I would have thought that an INFALLIBLE IP, much like a Harry Potter TV show, but guess not.

Lol. But I was really roped into it.

Also, I thought they dropped all episodes at once. So I will have more to watch in the future beyond the few episodes I see in my list now.

Ok, so a new episode came out, so I watched indirectly while my wife was doing the same. I saw no other episode of Season 2.

Let me get this straight:

Elves stop and Elorond is discussing with the lead orc
Lead orc wants to destroy Sauron
Celbrimbor is running around like a madman
Main dwarf dude gives a shit speech

This series is dumpster fire.

This episode was such a trainwreck on so many fronts, it made the worst of Game of Thrones look Oscar worthy in comparison.

The direction was laughable and the showrunners lack of credibility was on full display.

This is how bad entertainment can and will get, whether it's TV, movies or games when you give talentless meritless hacks the reigns. Even when the source material is LOTR.

Tolkein must be rolling in his grave.

Why do ya'll continue to torture yourselves by watching this garbage? I'm a massive Halo fan, but I dropped Season 1 just over halfway through.

I am of the belief this episode is so terrible that everyone should watch it as a case study. It's one for the history books.

I see all the time this question and really it's not that complicated, I get what you're saying and did the same with Halo, as I'm also a fan, but in season 2.

It's not like we have 10 LOTR shows from which to pick, so we're stuck with this one, so to say, but probably will skip it from season 3 if it continues being this utter shit or just watch scenes and recaps online.
And another reason for me is that I don't watch a lot of shows, I'm not in the trend of watching shows just for sake of doing something or passing time, in fact this is the only one that I watch as it releases, the few rest are rewatches of old shows or 1 or 2 new once in a while.

I liked the action in the latest episode, but it is Tolkien adjacent. Sometimes it feels Tolkienesq but it doesn’t have the same soul.

The big battle yesterday (Episode 7) didn't work IMO. Some cool production values but I think the directing was all over the place.
Unlike the battles in the movies (and other TV shows) you never really get a good idea of how the overall battle is going, what the armies are doing or what the general strategy is, specially from the side of the elves.

- It starts with the big cavalry charge which gets interrupted.
- Then they talk with Snape and can't get to an agreement
- Then it just cuts to a random scene of Elrond fighting in the woods, no idea how we got there or if there is a strategy beyond "everyone just randomly run to the wall"
- Then through the episode we just get thrown into random scenes of Elrond fighting, never really getting a sense of what is happening in the battle at large or what their strategy is.
- At one point one of the orcs tells Snape the Elves are doing better than expected and they should consider retreating, giving us the impression they have the upper hand
- Then they release a troll and we are informed it's risky because he'll kill troops on both sides. He enters the battle and, from what we see on screen, kills a few Elven troops but overall gets taken down fairly quickly.
- Then it's morning and the battle is lost and there are only like 10 Elves left. So apparently the troll alone completely destroyed the Elven army, but it wasn't portrayed very clearly on screen.

Also the city guard is completely useless and does nothing. I assume the idea is that they are in disarray because Sauron fucked up the chain of command, but you'd assume the guard itself still has superior officers that could so something. We are only shown they have some strategy involving incendiary sacks but I guess they only had 5 of them?

Me watching this show is a form of self-harm I’m sure. There are moments through this series where I wonder if Peter Jackson’s lawyers are taking notes. They are so obviously hanging off the PJ trilogy’s coattails is hilarious. This is the TV equivalent of a looky looky man selling fake handbags, and not good fakes.

Points from this week’s episode.

She-elf Boromir death scene, fuck off
Look to the east nod, fuck off
Their lame Grond rip off, just stop
Elrond/Galadriel kiss, such screen chemistry
Celebrimbor scenes, liked them overall
Some battle scenes, not bad
Dwarve scenes, not bad, not a lot there mind
Poor misunderstood Orcs, jfc

Episode 7 was hard to watch. So dumb. I recommend muting the dialogue and watching it as a silent movie.

Celebrimbor, the weakest and most pathetic of the Elves.

Fbh's post sums it up.

The battle direction was just atrocious and it was just so amature and laughable.

When you consider it's Tolkein's, LOTR, Amazon and all the big money involved it should never have been allowed to stoop this low. The battles in the Hobbit were better....

Yeah, you really have to be in bad faith to say that.

This battle has its flaws, but it's not uninteresting or even bad, especially compared to the NPC copy/paste crap in The Hobbit.

I am liking the show. It's not a masterpiece but I like the characters and the setting. Some story threads are duller than others, sure. This latest episode was a fun watch, glad they have a total of 5 seasons on the contract (,or is it 5 more?).

I think it is technically 50 'hours' so unless this 8 ep season has shows running over 60min they are already in the hole on the original 5 seasons of 10 ep projection.

IntentionalPun

Ask me about my wife's perfect butthole
Battle stuff was not good.

Feel like I was just happy lots of stuff was happening in his season and feeling the show had really improved but the characters outside of maybe Adar / Arondir / Sauron just aren’t doing anything for me so the shine has worn off mostly.

Continuing to be an utter disgrace to the Tolkien legacy. Shame on this timeline.
Not only that, but there are illogical things that boggle the mind, plot holes, some motivations and actions of characters that make them seem like imbeciles, never mind about nonsensical and vague dialogue just for the sake of it.

You know, I'm really not one to notice right away plot holes or some things like that, but with this show it's just so obvious, it's like someone smacks my head every time there's something idiotic, I'm just wondering who is in charge here?
And Jesus, it's an hour long episode in this rich fantasy universe and there are episodes that are boring as hell, Jesus, how do you manage that?

Everything surrounding Gandalf and Numenor is pretty stupid. It feels like teenagers wrote it.

Yeah, seems like it, and it's not gonna be any different until it's done, I think this may be my last season, this is insulting from a logic POV and how stuff works.

I'm glad I decided to give season 2 a miss. It looks even worse. Peak comedy material though.

That was pretty bad. I hated that. Especially since he gwts with her daughter.

Some great moments in this episode, particularly with Sauron and Celebrimbor. But some really dumb shit too.

Elrond does what? Did people tell them it is not a competition between them and Shadow of War for who can pisse on Tolkien’s work the farthest?

A mixture of good stuff (I liked most of Sauron, dwarves are good, even the POC dwarven wife was OK, Erlond) and numerous unbelievably terrible stuff, e.g. boromiring of that out of nowhere asian elf, what on f*cking planet earth are they smoking? A cavalry charge can be stopped by putting out a single hostage who is anyhow sacrificed shortly after? You can demolish rocks by throwing a handful of stones nowadays and stop a river? The f*ck does Aldar want, wasn't it peaceful life and dead Sauron?

Erlond vs anyone fights felt amateurish, not sure if it was intended as he is "not gud" a warrior. yet.

Numinor and unprivileged hobbits are very boring.

Overall, I got these vibes:

Still, was more entertaining than season 1. Perhaps because there was less Numiinor and no random love story of god knows whom.

-----------------------------------

Don't give a damn about some stuff being "non-canon". Tolkien hismelf didn't quite explain the dark sides of the elven/dwarven rings in LOTR and I don't care that he could sorta fill it in later on.

Hard to watch Celebrimbor get bamboozled like a big dummy.

The show is awful.
lmfao I haven’t watched a single episode but the variety of reactions to it I’ve seen entertains me to no end. A good friend of mine and coworkers all seem to like it but then I see reactions like this
