Peter Prescott works at a record store in my neighborhood. Nice guy, and great fucking band.
Still, I thought they were back together full time?
Oh and for Dave the album you want is
Vs. as it was their only studio LP during their original period.
Signals, Calls, and Marches was an EP and
The Horrible Truth About Burma was a live LP
They have since reformed and released two rather good albums as well.
They're more of a
Slanted and Enchanted era Pavement comparison though with more in common with the Pixies, Husker Du, Sonic Youth, and other 80s alternative acts.
Also not really related, but I keep pushing Hum (
You'd Prefer an Astronaut suggested) and Failure (
Fantastic Planet suggested) as well. Both are essentially 90s alternative acts that incorporated a great deal of texture and shoegaziness into their sound. Hum was more spacey, but Failure was more grunge. Both are technically classified as part of the 90s space rock scene, but too many people think of 70s style space rock when you mention that so I tend not to.
For Rock Band we desperately need
Battles - "Atlas". I'm only half-joking. It would be a great track on drums. As for vocals, yes, there are actual lyrics. Surprisingly despite great, astounding praise live I didn't fall for them live all that much. Sometimes instrumental acts can be a tad dry live and fail to connect with me. Not always (Godspeed You! Black Emperor were great live, but ludicrously loud... oddly it was the loudest show I've ever been to), but this was one of those occasions. Not a lot of audience interactions either. They were too much in their own little world of looping and effects and it felt a bit too distancing to keep me into it. The high crash cymbal, however, is awesome. Good band, but I can't quite call them essential personally. I wish I could though because I desperately want to love them. "Atlas" is fucking amazing though. Definitely one of my top ten singles of last year.
Speaking of shows from the past year when they do RB: Japan they will almost certainly have a song by the pillows and they'd better make that DLC here in the USA.
