I feel I should step in here and say that the "sharing" of DLC is officially frowned upon by Harmonix as they have relayed a few times on the official message boards. Sony's opinion is a bit mixed. Some people have posted how it may be a violation of the terms of service while others have posted quotes from Sony employees that seem to view it as acceptable (not specifically referring to Rock Band though).

Just be advised that it is currently a hazy legal grey area.

Also realize that unless you share a sub-account you'll have your credit card information in the account and anyone you share it with can make purchases. They could also, for that matter, change all the login and password information and lock you out of it. They especially might do this while keeping the credit card information intact. For this reasons it's definitely not what I'd consider "safe".

As a developer myself, I find it outrageous that Sony would condone such behaviour. However their refusal to insist on demo's for every PSN game makes me think it's not the end of the world, but really, those 5 time downloads are for your protection, not to abuse in such a manner.

Not a popular opinion, I know, but there it is.

So the moving pictures technical difficulty thread on the rock band forums is full of 11-year-olds trying to get the thousandth post.

I just want to see an update on this mess.

I think the other thing to keep in mind here is that Sony is being pretty damn reasonable here. They could have locked this thing down tighter than a mermaid's asshole, but they didn't. They gave us a system that's actually pretty reasonable and open. If you need to get a new PS3 you can just link up your account and download everything all over again. Same thing goes for transferring to a new hard drive. Or if you, for some reason, own more than one machine. Not to mention having the ability to go over to a friend's house and bring your games with you... even if those games are downloads instead of physical.

The problem is that if people abuse the hell out of this it'll go away. Look at how terrible DRM is getting everywhere else? This is directly because of two reasons 1)Copyright holders are often huge dicks. That's what their job is, essentially, to be massive fucking bastards and make a lot of money by screwing people over. Is it any surprise that the music industry and film industry are pulling this crap? Their entire business model has almost always been based on "find someone talented, be a douche, ????, profit!". 2)They are scared as hell that you might not buy something and they'll have to cut back on the condor egg omelets and twice-weekly rectal massage and anal bleaching spa appointments. They will completely fuck you over in order to demand that you pay them as much money as possible and try to find a way to make reasonable personal use impossible. Sometimes they will even smile and seemingly do something nice just to lock you into a proprietary trap.

This is happening as a collusion between hardware and software manufacturers. Guess what? Sony is both. They sure as hell are very happy to lock down movies and music so far. See how much people bitch about piracy on the PC for games already? Don't give them a chance to say that we've abused their generosity and make things bad.

Whatever you do just realize that you could very easily go and kill the goose that's laying the golden eggs.

bradders, you're a dev?

You learn something new everyday....

And I'll fucking hate every single one of you people when Moving Pictures releases as I'll be stuck in residence at York university.

It's popular enough by me, man. As a content provider regularly screwed out of income, I think this sort of thing is all kinds of wack. Kind of explains the huge disparity in DLC sales between the two consoles.

Yeah, it's in his profile. Apparently he develops FMV adventure game segments to be used in interactive scheißer films for the German market. :lol

Well, don't I feel like an ass now. I suppose the best I can do is keep buying DLC from Harmonix to at least lesses my trangersions-- slightly, oh so very slightly.

I feel bad just asking about it. But I will make up for it by finally buying Rock Band today (game-only) and getting a bunch of DLC, including Moving Pictures.

exactly. game sharing is an abhorrent system. the ONLY place such a system should be allowed is in the instance of multiple consoles in the same house (living room and bedroom PS3, etc). even then they should have checks in place to make sure the systems are coming from the same IP. 360 does a fair job with the recovering gamertag option, though that wouldn't solve two 360s in the same house.

frankly game sharing is piracy. sure sony condones it, but it is piracy nonetheless as sony doesn't own the IPs affected.

I have 2 important questions that I would like somebody informed to answer. I haven't followed every bit of news just cos I still don't expect the game this year so I don't know if they have been answered.

1. Is Hyperspeed a system wide option that will affect everybody in multiplayer?

2. Does Down With The Sickness maintain its incredible bridge lyrics? I don't mind "fuck" being cut, but is the general feeling of angry emo kid that wants to kill his mother maintained? Or is there a radio edit that ruins it?

I'm sure they will go with the radio edit that does not contain the bridge. :lol

Ugh. Well whats the point of the song existing? I made a RB2 playlist today that I've been going through and when I got to that section I was blown away by how fantastically awful it is. Go for an M rating, Harmonix!

I also found out today that Psycho Killer by Talking Heads is an awesome song. Rock Band 2's soundtrack is really good. LTTP I know.

I had heard the song on the radio countless times before hearing the album version. I couldn't believe my ears.

Is there any reason to believe that the plug for a yellow cymbal cannot simply be switched with the plug for the red pad? Just plug the yellow cymbal into the red pad plug and vice versa. Makes perfect sense to me.
Yes. There is reason to believe it cannot. From the Drum Rocker FAQ:

Q: Will it be possible to remap the hi-hat to red for the appropriate songs? (such as Run to the Hills, Orange Crush, Outside...)? Even if we could plug in the hi-hat cymbal to the red snare drum's input jack or something, that would be great.

A: There is no cymbal input that corresponds to the red input for the game, and the sensitivity level of the cymbal input is different than the input for the pads, so you can’t simply plug the yellow cymbal into the red pad input and get the effect you’re after. In those rare instances where Rock Band maps the hi-hat to the red pad, you will have to play the part on the red Drum Rocker pad, just as you would with the standard Rock Band kit.

Again, not all drum triggers are the same. They have different output characteristics. They are essentially specialized microphones, and they all "sound" different to a drum brain. Cymbal triggers sound different than kick pedal triggers. Drum pad triggers sound different than cymbal triggers. Roland high-hat triggers sound different than Pintech high-hat triggers. ION cymbal triggers sound different than ION drum triggers. Trying to plug anything into an input optimized for something else is asking for trouble. It may work fine. It may work okay. It may not work at all. It depends on how similar the output characteristics are. Most drum brains are adjustable so you can tweak their inputs to match any trigger. The ION brain is not. Each of its inputs is factory set to accept a single type of signal. It's a gaming controller. It's super cheap. It has no display. Whaddiya want? :D

I do think it would be nice if Harmonix recognized the limitations of the ION kit, and created alternate charts for those few "weird" songs.

My wife (the drummer) is left handed, so I hope lefty flip is not horribly broken on the ION. That would be Bad.

"Weird" songs that they created to make the game more realistic, and don't do anything to keep it that way. Boggles my mind.

If you haven't seen/heard it yet the version of Psycho Killer on Stop Making Sense is great. Frankly, it's just a really good concert film. Sure, some of it's innovations are now pretty standard and it's massively overhyped and usually overrated, but it's very good and Psycho Killer starts it all off with just a boom box and an acoustic guitar.

I got a chance to play Rock Band 2 at X'08, though I didn't get to play Down With the Sickness. I did watch people play the song and from what I recall I don't believe bridge lyrics are in RB2 version.

They had the ION set there, so I got a chance to test it out. I did not notice the symbols missing any notes and the whole drum kit seemed to be pretty solid. I played 4 or 5 songs on it, and they are quite impressive. My only complaint would be that the pedal was moving on me too much. Other than that, if I had 300 dollars to spare I would pick them up, but unfortunately I am poor :(

borghe: You're right. It's morally gray enough that I have trouble with picking things as one side or the other. But, I still feel in the wrong, so I guess, I'll just have to rectify that.

I know you can't transfer characters from RB1 to RB2, but can you transfer your band name? It would suck if you can't use the same band name.

All of the Avril Lavigne songs are from her album Let Go. Harmonix has said one of the albums is from the pop genre.

Hmm.

This better be the case. Cos if they release 6 Avril songs and NONE of them are Girlfriend, we have a huge problem with society.

I'm calling fake on the list as well. If anything is found out via looking at the DLC files, I'd imagine that ScoreHero is going to find it first. Pretty much everything I ever read on the Official Rock Band forums is just a pipedream.

wat

And I think that list is fake. A rush 3 pack released shortly after moving pictures? Not happening.
