I kinda agree with Dave on this. I would like "special" conditions to be met in Challenge modes, stuff like 1.5x speed, or no music playing. They were fun in DDR, and they are just as easilly transferable to RB gameplay.

Also, I liked the Boss Battle mode in GH3.

You're not playing anything differently, though; it's still always going to be matching colors at the bottom of the screen, regardless if it's asking you to do something specifically or the presentation is slightly different. Short of completely redoing the way fake plastic instrument games operate, you aren't going to see a single shred of meaningful deviation.

Um, yes? Just like any FPS is shooting people, any rhythm game is matching notes on a highway. Doesn't mean they can't add any special conditions for challenges, which should not be necessary mind you.

Also, fuck "poison" notes and invisible notes.

I'm just saying it's pointless to bitch about Harmonix's challenges being "the same gameplay" when that's all it fucking ever is in other games.

I like some of the challenges in Rock Revolution, the bit about the difficulty inching up and/or the speed increasing with your multiplier was cool.

Also I like the GH5/Band Hero challenges as well. Yes, technically it's the 'same' gameplay, but trying to whammy so many seconds, get so long of a streak, etc. IS a definite challenge.

I'm with ya on the poison notes tho, man those pissed me off!

How are the challenges in GH not "the same exact gameplay?"

Because at least the critera is usually something other than "beat the song". There's a clear difference between beating a song and meeting a challenge criteria a lot of the time. Lets not make silly excuses here, even if you want to keep the game grounded "challenges" is not the right word for what they're doing here.

You'd have a stronger leg to stand on if the challenges in GH didn't involve playing the entire song anyways. Changing the "focus" doesn't change the outcome one iota.

You're still playing a song, this is true, but you have challenges like 21st Century Schizoid Man that are purely based on what you do during a 20 second part of the song.

I'm not even saying challenges are amazing (some are good, some are really not) but Green Day RB is literally "play the songs again in a different order". It's terrible. And I never even unlocked stuff in Beatles because of how fucking boring their "challenges" were

I hope RB3 has challenges that make you play blindfolded using Natal and some for standing on your head and some for getting an expert FC with the actual controller and not the guitar and a mode where all the colors change mid song to different buttons and lefty flip randomly comes on and you have to FC a Dream Theater song.

Also the Paul McCartney pack is the greatest pack in the game c/c?

I just see right through the bullshit, that's all. A spade with diamonds in the shaft and an engraving of Axel Steel is still just a spade.

Yeah, giving you something else to do in the songs other than just beat them is a shitty gimmick. Hey, we should take away the scores from the game, because it's just a gimmick to rate your abilities in any way other than just beating the song!

Challenges really are just beating the song again, though. It'd be different if, for example, that 20 second bit in 21st Century Schizoid Man was all that you played when doing the challenge, but you gotta go through the whole song front to back in order to do it. Fuck up and it's back to the beginning.

I take issue with the redundancy of something like that in an arcade style game like fake plastic instrument games. I won't even pretend that Harmonix has their fingers on the pulse for what gamers really want, but I'm not going to go apeshit over something like that when going for a high score is really all anyone could want.

Unless you've secretly been building an army of horrific GH create-a-characters with the parts that you've unlocked via the challenges, that is.

I got more replay value out of a lot of songs trying to get platinum on the challenges. Case closed, I win!

I don't know yet; I haven't gotten any presents yet and won't until my entire family is present and accounted for. That's how shit rolls around here.

I really hope I get a new bike.

Ridley, it's your birthday
God bless you this day.
You gave me the gift of opposing viewpoints,
And I'm proud of you today.

Ridley, it's your birthday.
Happy birthday, Ridley.
Ridley, it's your birthday.
Happy birthday, Ridley.

I wish you Green Day chord fests.
I wish you peace and joy.
I wish you better than Harmonix challenges.
And your first kiss from a boy.

Ridley, it's your birthday.
Happy birthday, Ridley.
Ridley, it's your birthday.
Happy birthday, Ridley.

I've actually canceled my renewal of XNA; I just don't have the time anymore to do any playtesting. It was fun while it lasted, though, and I got to get my crabcore on before anyone else!

Conan is on TBS? Dave and Costanza suiciding. :lol :lol :lol

Yup Next to Lopez tonight i guess. Sucks for Conan

Should have joined team xbox

Team Conan (including his exec producer Jeff Ross, and WME's Rick Rosen, and manager Gavin Palone, and Ziffren Brittenham attorney Sam Fischer), were thinking way outside the network box. For instance, there were discussions with Microsoft about an Xbox deal for Conan's show that would have broken new ground.
