ROG Xbox Ally X - Reviews Thread

You'll understand when you have kids.

On topic - 7 inch screen is a dealbreaker for me. So stupid to have a 7 inch IPS in a 1k+ device. Steam Deck OLED is the value king and tbqh strong enough for 95% of games I want to play on a handheld.
Honestly yeah, for the price of this ally, you could just get a steam deck oled and a switch 2

Also the og question, for a lot of us its a nostalgia thing. I grew up playing a gameboy, gbc, gba, psp, ds, etc because on top of not having to fight my step dad dor the tv, i could play my games anywhere. In my room, at my grandparents, the library, school, road trips, etc.

And it wasnt just out of convenience, plenty of my favorite ganes are handheld games (the pokemon games, zelda the minish cap, LBP psp, tenkaichi tag team, mario kart ds, etc)

I will never understand people wanting to play handheld. I respect it but I dont understand it

Nothing can beat playing a videogame on a big screen with the best quality
I agree that playing on a 65" OLED is probably the best way to play, but I travel for work and so I can kill a couple of hours a day playing through my back log on Steam Deck or Switch 2.

It's a perfectly fine way to play games in my opinion, providing you can accept it won't have the same presentation as a PS5 Pro or high end PC. I'd never have got through some of my games if it wasn't for those platforms.

Compatibility.
Steamdeck plays Battlefield 6 at 0FPS.
I had Windows 11 installed on my Steam Deck for quite a while for that same reason. These are all just PCs. It's not like consoles where everything is locked down (well, maybe this new one is, but Steam Deck can boot to any PC x64 ISO).

Laptop? Who games on a laptop on the go?
I do.

I travel a lot and I like playing video games whenever I can.

I was planning to get this device, but a couple of months ago I had to get a new laptop and I ended up buying one with a rtx 4050 and I am extremely happy with it.

I can play any game from gamepass without any issues and the rtx 4050 can run games at higher settings than my series s.

Anyway, this ally x seems weaker than the series s.... That's disappointing to say the least.

I tried Windows on Deck back in the day. It's a shitty experience, drivers wise. Unless Valve has made improvements to that space.

You may be the only person in the world who expected this to be more powerful than the Series S.

Not more powerful, but I hoped to be at least on par to it on docked mode.

I do admit that I know nothing about those portable devices... I just hoped for the best.

I'll stick with my Steam Deck. If I want to play demanding games I will play them on the big screen on my PC where I can see clearly what i going on and don't have to make sacrifices to get, at minimum, 60 fps. I'm happy to wait until Steam Deck 2 is out thank you very much.

1000 euros for 1080p 30fps. Don't forget people laughed at the switch 2 for 450 and openly said they were not getting a switch 2 because this handheld will be the king of handhelds

Skimmed thru the verge's article. They say it doesn't ship with the FSE installed and they spent hours on it before being able to play a game.

Also some of the tests it seems to be losing to the MSI Claw, oof.

Also read from IGN that FSE gives zero performance boost. Pretty much what I said when I tried FSE.

Common sense is kicking in. This thing should have just been reviewed as a handheld. Instead people are pointing out the bullshit marketing.

Majority of reviewers covered it as a handheld PC, though.

With refund pass you could get the entire library for free. So while the initial payment is steep, the games library can potentially be free.

'Entire library' in this case would also include Steam, GOG and the EGS.

You found a pass to give you access to all the games there?

They should be addressing the "xbox" marketing and making sure people know it isn't an xbox. Otherwise, Dave2D will be right and there will be a lot of returns. The problem is the marketing itself and that's what reviewers are having to focus on.

Are you telling me for a whopping $25 more that a bigger screen and 8GB more ram is not worth it?

When did I say it wasn't worth it? It's certainly the better value if the display size is dealbreaker for you.
I spoke about your 'surprise' about the relative performance.

Most reviewers covered the marketing and branding issue, if not all.

For the actual review - performance, ergonomics, software etc, most covered that as a handheld PC.

But in Europe and the UK, the difference is ~€100 between the two. I think this is where the price is right, and not so much in the US, where it clearly feels out of step. Not compared to its sister, the ROG Ally X, but compared to some of the competition.

Makes sense.

US pricing being out of step isn't surprising these days

As cool as it looks portables are completely out of the question for me, my eyesight/vision is not as good as it used to be, actually I play my Switch and Switch 2 docked. Being +40 yo doesn't help

Looks more than 0 to me.

From the video author:
"Do not get excited to try this, it chugs horribly"
"FPS and frame drops are HORRIBLE"
"Follow this guide to enable secure boot but it might brick your deck if you're not careful!"

My God will judge you for this 🙄

So?? It runs. What is your next change of goalpost??

And how the hell enabling secure boot would brick the deck, WTF??

I still consider the Steam Deck OLED to be a significantly superior product overall (despite being much older).

Both have their strengths and weaknesses, but price alone makes the Steam Deck the clear winner.
