One of the most exciting things about Rogue One finally releasing is that those locks are about to come off.

I'm staying spoiler-free for VIII, like I did with VII. That really paid off.

I'm actually really surprised this isn't running with an EP8 teaser in front of it, even just something simple like a title graphic and "Coming December 2017"

They're playing it right, I think. They want this movie to be able to breathe and exist on its own for now. But it won't last. VIII is out in just 12 months, so they'll start talking very shortly after this comes out.

Two days away from release and I ran into a spoiler. :\ Damn these thread titles!

I haven't been spoiled, but I'm really not a fan of how these threads were handled. I don't see why it had to be different from other movies.

Non-spoiler OT, spoiler thread. *shrug*

Currently sitting at almost exactly where RotS is.. 79% and 7.3 average review.

Welp, shit, lol. There goes my trust. Just gunna have to judge for myself and say fuck the reviews.

What does Lee being gone have anything to do with the ability to like a character that the late actor played? I'd imagine he'd be happy to know that people liked his work.

To answer your question, many things. His look, his saber, the gray area his character was in, his elegance, and presence in general.
I didn't mention Lee in regards to you liking Dooku in the prequels, I mentioned him in regards to new interpretations of the character you're looking forward to in his absence. His elegance and presence are surely part of the guy's performance, no?

And gray area that his character was in? At best, he was a villain that was being cheecky with Obi-Wan when he offered for him to join him. There's no gray area when the alternative to joining the guy working with the sepratists and who has a red lightsaber is going out to fight the bug monsters.

There will be no live-action interpretations in his absence so I'm not looking forward to anything in that regard. I was mulling over how great it would have been to see the character much younger played by a younger Christopher Lee. He passed, so that's not happening. I was just saying it would've been cool.

Regarding the gray area, I didn't think he was fully evil or something. There are times in the prequels where he feels conflicted over things, like when he's talking to Kenobi when they have him incarcerated on Geonosis, the way he looks when Jango Fett is beheaded, etc. Again, gray area, in that he's not completely evil but has turned his back on the "good" side. And on top of that I would even argue that where the point of the prequels was to show how corrupt and ego-centric, dogmatic the Jedi were, I can understand why Dooku defected. Qui-Gon was very rebellious as well.

The AV Club review for the film seems to suggest that the reshoots were probably done to make the main hero more "relatable" and likable.

Apparently she jumps back and forth between being
an unhappy loner and an "inspirational" leader
type character.

If this is true, this is the first instance of Disney meddling being a bad thing for Star Wars.

Oh man

I heard a lot of this

I wasn't considering watching this on the theater because of TFA, but I might give a chance later.

If it were any other film, the final sequence would have been a post credit zinger.

Here, it's just right at the end, before the credits start.

Sounds like a really solid SW spin-off film! Although considering the amazing tweets from last week, I can see why people would be a bit disappointed (people do need to keep their expectations in check anytime tweets are like "it's amazing though).

I think there might be a leak about reys costume in the film lol
I saw some shit about Luke in a poncho. And a couple of production photos in a city with space-horses. If Rian Johnson's twitter is anything to go by, production has gone smoothly and they're well into post. Which is a little crazy, because it's still a year out.

That's it. Lucasfilm have kept a much better lid on VIII than VII.

No disgruntled crew who were out of jobs because of Harrison Ford's injury and the resultant break in filming leaking stuff probably helped keep everything secret. I think most of the TFA leaks came from stuff like that.

There just isn't as much hype for it among the general public yet. TFA was the continuation we thought we'd never get after 40 years. VIII is just another sequel.

Rogue One has the best space battle of any of the films

Interesting not hearing nearly anything about Krennick, I legitimately assumed he would go down incredibly well, Collider didnt mention him more than once in their 30min review.

Holy god damn is that birthmoviesdeath review spoiler-y. I enjoyed it but if you want to preserve any shred of mystery, steer clear.

This thirty second production video got 13 million views. There is hype.

But that's not the point. TFA was leaky. As in, we were looking at concept art and reading story beats in 2014 that, lo and behold, it'salltrue.gif.

Remember the hand in space? Remember Kira?

Sounds legit.

No. They're awesome. The style makes sense considering who's fighting, the powers they have (especially of foresight), etc.

They're exactly what I wanted out of the prequel fights. The idea of Jedi/Sith in their prime in lightsaber duels was always fascinating to me as a kid, and I feel like I got that.

Same, the lightsaber fights in the prequels are fantastic and everyone that hates on them can stick to boring ass obi wan vs Vader in ANH.

Surprising he didn't get a mention. The reception to him seems pretty positive overall.

Galen finds himself working for the Empire’s chillingly fanatical administrator, Krennic – a pleasingly unpleasant performance, facially tense and clipped, from Ben Mendelsohn.

Jyn's mission impossible is to steal the plans for the massive planet-destroyer and foil the villainous Imperial special weapons director Orson Krennic, played by the great Ben Mendelsohn with the most delicious shades of fright and fun this side of Christoph Waltz.

On the villain front, Ben Mendelsohn is perfectly smarmy (and right at home among the classic Empire portrayal from the original trilogy) as the ambitious but possibly overreaching Director Krennic.

Take the prologue, in which the former Empire technologist Galen Erso (a nobly anguished Mads Mikkelsen) is captured by Commander Orson Krennic (Ben Mendelsohn, deliciously booable, who needs his expert input in the crafting of a new Imperial super-weapon.

The most crowdpleasing stuff, however, comes courtesy of the villains. Mendelsohn is gloriously hissable as white-caped, permanently furious Imperial slimeball Director Orson Krennic: when someone pleads with him, “You’re confusing peace with terror.” He sneers back, “Well, you have to start somewhere.”

As much as it's almost guaranteed to not be as successful as EP7 for the reasons you've listed above, that's not the reason why things aren't leaking. They just fucked up big time with the way EP7 production was handled in regard to information surrounding the film.

The movie is a year out. Of course people aren't talking about it as much. When it's close people are going to lose their shit.

Especially considering people expect bigger things out of EP8 because of some of their disappointments with EP7.

Lan Dong Mik

And why would I want them?
Yeah I'd be pretty fucking surprised if I'm underwhelmed by Mendelsohn in this. Dude has had me sold ever since I saw him in The Place Beyond the Pines. Amazing actor.

VII was the re-launch of the franchise and introduction to a new generation. Its also the direct sequel to the biggest movie trilogy of all time. I don't think there was any way they were going to be able to keep it all under wraps due to having that kind of scrutiny.

In a way though, because of everything that VII was, and had to be, it greatly takes the pressure off the subsequent films and hopefully things can be more manageable.
