Roland Garros 2017 |OT| - The Worst Slam

John Dunbar

correct about everything
it's a fun thought that nadal beat söderling 6-1, 6-0 in rome in 2009, and this year djokovic did the same to thiem. of course djokovic has been rubbish all year long so this isn't that much of a surprise.

this will also mean that thiem will do a miracle run all the way to the final, only to be vanquished by clayray. prophecies fulfilled.

while djokovic being slamless would certainly be delicious, it's a spanish beast that needs to be slain this year.

As a Rafa fan coming into RG, Thiem was the player I feared that could beat Rafa and it looks like that is the semi final. Hopefully Rafa can neutralise him.
Unless Novak can make a comeback.

How is Thiem playing? Is he beasting or is Djokovic not playing well as Novak thrashed him in Rome.

At work so can't watch

djokovic has been total rubbish outside few moments in the first set. right now i think he has won like 3 points from the last 15.

pretty sure this loss will also mean that djokovic will be out of the top 2 for the first time since early 2011.

Got served that bagel. Hope Rafa can improve from his Rome performance against Thiem, almost feels like the final.

And when people thought he was unbeatable a year ago.
And when people thought Rafa and Fed are done a year ago.

Time flies so fast.

I went to the Chatrier yesterday. What a joy of a slam it is without a roof. Saw 1:30 of game on the Central, with many moves between the seats and shelter fir the rain, everybody was crammed in the few spaces available. Shitty experience overall.
Saw the legends trophy in the morning, so watching Norman, Enqwist and Medvedev was fun. Shame for Mladenovic though, she never really started her quarter final.

Well you should get refounded so it was a free shitty experience :p

Absolutely. That was the best and most normal move to do for them, but appreciated anyway.
When asking at the info counter there they said that we would get no refund since Junior players managed to play more than two hours that day .... that would have been a PR shitstorm for them if true.

Poor Svitolina...she won the first set,was leading 5-1 in the second but Halep came back and is about to bagel her in the 3rd set...

Halep was so tough from 1-5 down, hardly missing a ball for 5 games. Then she threw away her set points at 6-5 before Svitolina blew chances in the TB to close it (missed returns at 4-3 and 4-4). Halep played a superb, attacking point to save MP then got a fortunate net cord to take the set. Really intense set where you could feel how much they both wanted it. Shame Svitolina couldn't recover from it emotionally.

And Djokovic completed towelled it once he went a break down in the second. This time last year he was defending champion at all 4 Slams, and now, only one year on, he's dropped from the top 2 for the first time since 2011 and to his lowest ranking points total (adjusted for changes in how they're counted) since 2007. I suppose it's likely he'll be back at the top, but when you see him seemingly not care about losing to a player he's holding a 5-0 H2H over, you wonder...

what are your predictions for Rafa v Thiem match?

Thiem has his chances, Rafa's draw was pretty much a cakewalk until now, he hasn't been apropriately tested yet, so if Thiem plays really well he can surprise him. But yeah, Nadal is the obvious favourite. Best clay player of all time launched at you at full speed, do the math, it'll be incredibly difficult.

I don't know if it's that likely. He doesn't have that much time ahead of him to turn things around. Like Nadal he has the game to still go deep in a few slams, but I doubt he'll dominate again like he has. We'll see.

They were surprisingly fair with rain refunds this year. Usually they refund only 50% of the price if there's between 1 hour and 2 hours of playtime. Guess they somehow remembered a good part of the audience from tuesday, last year (it rained too), who were just partly refunded, bought tickets for the same day this year (they opened the sales sooner for people who were there monday and tuesday in the second week last year, but you could only buy tickets for the same day). Only 3 hours of tennis in two years, that's pretty shitty.
People who had tickets for courts outside Chatrier and Lenglen won't be refunded (because of the junior matches you talked about) so it's still not perfect.

Love Murray's hold on the number 1 spot. Poor results, just not as bad as the guy behind him.

He has put together a fairly respectable defense period by now.

In most cases with a no 1 getting results as poor as Murray he'd have easily lost it but the 2nd half of last year was so fantastic for him his points total is still massive, especially when Djokovic who got nearly all the points in the first half has declined so much.

Will be incredibly hard for him to hold onto it unless he starts winning tournaments regularly from here on out though.

Nishikori has hit way to many errors after a good first set. He has the game to beat even a good Murray, but seems to be continuing his poor form.

3/4 of the semifinalists have not dropped a single set. everyone should at least be fresh.

not going to be much help for thiem, though.

Wawrinka has to be the favourite comparing their level today but I recall the same thing being said this time last year and Murray played an excellent match, neutralising his backhand effectively.

Impossible to look past Nadal for the title though. Will be interesting to see if Thiem even can manage a set.

Who is going to make it incredibly hard for him in the second half? No doubt see Murray dropping a lot of points after the amazing run last year. Who has the most easy points to gain?
