I and II were freakin' awesome. III was a piece of shit in my opinion (it wasn't even done by the SaGa team, but by the people who made FF:MQ), but it has its followers.
I'm one of those ill-regarded lovers of part III. I had recently gotten into RPGs with Final Fantasy and Dragon Warrior rentals. I saw Final Fantasy, and I had a Game Boy, so I went for it.
That said, it is far, far better than Mystic Quest and is a pretty decent, if very linear RPG. The customization systems were fairly deep as far as changing races, but only cyborgs and beasts were any good aside from your base characters. I enjoyed the SaGa technique of mixing sci-fi and fantasy aspects together haphazardly, and some of the fights were fairly strategic (for a newcomer to RPGs).
I probably played it through about 5 or 6 times, and the last time was about three years ago. It still held up rather well opposed to other handheld RPGs.
Legend I was somewhat bland and very unbalanced, and II was pretty impressive, but just too hard for me at the time.
I also finished all 7 quests of SaGa Frontier, but I have yet to finish a SaGa game since.
