Interesting point, but I think
the simple act of Quaritch firing and injuring Grace is enough to prove the same point. By the time Home Tree, Jake is already a Na'Vi.
These are all good points, but I think the pacing of the film would have benefitted tremendously... Home tree was a sort climax for the film, and it needed to sustain... I think once that home tree scene happens too, I think everyone in the theater is expecting this to be the big battle... so when things dip back down, I felt a tremendous sensation of impatience in the room.
Really? To me the plot played as a traditional five-act structure,
and the destruction of Home Tree
is the conflict which draws a curtain on Act 3. It primes the audience for the ensuing re-emergence of the protagonist and eventual resolution. It produced no more impatience and confusion than any other well-built story constructed in five acts.

Nah, they needed
her to live long enough to go through the whole resurrection attempt scene, because that scene is vital so the audience won't think Jake's transference would be a complete Deus Ex machina out of nowhere which would have really made the ending suck (but I do think again that the scene could have been shortened). Most people who saw the spoilers for the end were already rolling their eyes at how Cameron was going to pull it off with a straight face. Thankfully, Cameron is smarter than a lot of manga writers (Kishi!!!!)
:lol

hmm, true. What about a scene earlier, where Neytiri asks Jake to make the transformation, explaining it was possible for him to be a Na'Vi forever, and have Jake refuse cause he is still unsure on who he is... I agree that depending on the execution for the end it could come across as "yeah okay suuurrree" had there not been prior explanation, but I think something like I said, or something else could have accomplished this... you don't need to do it with Grace dieing trying to transform

I'm not trying to be a dick, but how does one feel a "tremendous feeling of impatience" in a room?

Well, if the problem is with
Grace dying, then it is funny because she wasn't supposed to in the original script from what I was told. I dunno why they changed it up like that, but I guess Cameron felt this was better. Perhaps again to give more emotional impact to lead into Jake's speech

Well I felt a little impatient, but I think you can tell when an audience is gripped to a scene or when they are bored.

I had this list of tiny details I noticed this time around but keep forgetting them. Two that just came to mind.

When Jake starts the thanator chase sequence, he's wearing one of those neck collar transmitters. I thought that would be a big plot hole, since he should be able to just tell Grace where he is. But it comes detached when he hits the water - you can see it float away for a split second. I missed it the first time around.

There's a moment after Grace is shot and their ship is flying that Jake is moving around on his wheelchair. A canister gets knocked into his path, and he has to adjust, pick it up and slide it out of the way to move through the cabin. It's a really tiny, three second moment but I liked how it illustrated the growing gulf between his limited human body and his abilities as a Na'vi.

There was crying in the theater I was in today. I don't think it was tears of boredom. :p

I honestly would have been fine with her not
dieing, I would have liked to see her navigating Pandora at the end of the movie... I think Home Tree was enough emotional impact to move to the final act

All the showings I have been too have had minor applause at the end, so I guess I have just been going to theaters with tougher crowds heh

I like how we both keep borking the spoiler tags and fixing them in stealth-edit. :lol

As usual, the Hollywood box office experts (who had predicted this to me) were right on the money. Right now, I'm receiving differing numbers for Avatar's take today ranging from a low of $28M and high of $32M. The estimated weekend gross is also ranging from a low of $76M to a high close to $80M.
She bumped up her low end numbers a couple million. Looks like it will top last weekend.

LOL

We'll just have to all agree to disagree I guess on this Grace stuff :P ... Seeing it tomorrow first thing. I'll examine it more closely then and maybe I'll change my mind.

Ah, here's a quick shot that I think wasn't in the final film at the 25 second mark: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cVQC6IUDih8&feature=related

Does this thread really need this crap? There's room for both to do very well (and they did).

(And how the fuck do you not know how to spell "Sherlock"?)

Easy there cowboy. Just got pulled into the spirit of things, that's all.

So what's the percentage of the take home $$$ does Fox get from the gross? Infact how much do movie studios usually get from the box office? I know they don't get it all. Whats the margin?

:lol at Guy Ritchie. Next week's numbers will be brutal.

Madonna made a wise choice throwing his ass out!
Um... could we have a little perspective here? He's got the biggest-grossing movie of his career, after a long time spent in Hollywood's no man's land, and probably a new franchise. Just because Avatar will ultimately dwarf it doesn't make it a bomb.

(Seriously, I give up trying to be a voice of reason. Not that I'm always good at it. :lol )

Just saw Avatar in real 3d. HOLY SHIT. This is awesome, I saw it in 2d and was blown away but real 3d is the bees knees. Im not really a tech guy but when this comes out Day one BluRay and day one a HD TV. I enjoyed it even more in my second viewing.

Theaters usually get, like, a quarter for every ticket sold. Studios get most all of the ticket price. The theater itself only makes money off its food (ie, the high price of popcorn).

You are the 200th person to say that in this thread. It's not strange when you have that many people saying the same thing.
Heh, I wonder if it works the other way and if girls found avatar Jake attractive or not?

I noticed on my second viewing that he didn't seem to be as thin as the other Na'vi, especially compared to Tsu'tey

HAHA! I npoticed that too! The dude was pretty bneefy compared to the average Nav. Especially during the final battle sequence. When he was rolling and jumping from ship to ship. he had more depth in his mass.

With these numbers, I have a feeling Fox are going to make it really hard for JC not to consider moving on to Avatar 2 as his next film...(though, he really will have a true blank check for what he wants to do next...)

...and you have to wonder how he's going to feel about how he will go about the next one considering what an unbelievable reception A1 is getting...

I hear ya, but I will still laugh at the douche. The drop is going to be huge. You know that only a few weeks ago he had to have been shit talking Avatar. It must hurt to be so close and then get shit on by greatness.

Oh, and you did fine as the voice of reason. It's just that Ritchie is a twat.

Movie studios don't get to make demands of the Cameron.

This is possibly the best film I have seen since Dances With Wolves. Which is odd as they share alot thematically. Only movie I have ever paid for to see more than once in the cinema. I'm going back for a third time the day after Tomorrow. Im sure its been discussed to death, but man he tells a good story, avoids the Divine Machine perfectly. Nothing is unexplained or not set up, or left untold. Simply astounding.

Can someone give some details as to what was cut for the rest of not wanting to hunt down a script? Please? :D
Theres no way to know based on the script really. He could have never filmed a lot it, and instead written new stuff he cut.

This is the stuff we know for sure that was cut

- Pretty much every scene on earth
- Jake and the Na'vi hunting the Sturmbeest, and the party afterwards
- More scenes with Selfridge (Ribisi) and Quaritch
- Introductions of the other clan heads
- Parts of the final battle that took place at the human headquarters (probably cut early in post imo)

And most definitely more character beats with Michelle Rodriguez, Norm, Grace, etc...

Pic of the Sturmbeest:

From the game, but you get the idea

It would be a complete dis service if cameron do not recut those deleted scenes with CG. Would be a waste.

I cannot wait for the inevitable collectors edition. Im a sucker for them. I got the 4 disc Titanic DVD, and demand at least 5, nay, 6 discs for Avatar. Or one Blu-Ray, whatevers easiest. That reminds me, is Titanic out on Blu-ray?
