Think I'll ask this again for the new page:

What was Fox's break even point again? Was it still $500 million? Or did they lower their outlook to normal parameters of $250 mil?

Next up...Prediction #2

All this time I thought DMczaf would be a Cameron hater because of his Chris Nolan mancrush but it seems he's come around.

Next up, he'll be rocking a #24 Jersey...

When have I ever hated Cameron? Dude made my favorite 2 movies when I was a kid, T2 and True Lies. I just have a bigger mancrush for Nolan now <3

And I don't own a Cadillac Williams jersey :(

visually the movie is amazing, the story kinda falls short at the last 30 or so minutes though imo. It just felt rushed and o so predictable.

What the hell does 'lower their outlook' mean?

The figure they need to make back for the production budget is reportedly $238m or so, but is more likely $300m when all is said and done.

I'd say this movie is shockingly good. I just saw it in IMAX and really liked it. I seriously did not expect to like i that much. I hated Lord of the Rings and expected it to be something similar... I liked it to the point where I would understand if it got nominated for an Oscar.

Also says pretty much all complaints regarding character development would be moot when taking the cut footage into consideration.

Fook! Cameron better assemble a damn good Extended Cut :(
Would definitely like to see this.

That's because it is stupid. Ridiculously stupid.

Good movie. It struck me about halfway through that I wasn't viewing any of the cg/mocap stuff as "special effects." So, in that regard, Cameron has probably made the greatest fx movie to this point. It felt like this decade's "Jurassic Park."

The story wasn't great, and won't age well, but it was obviously a vehicle for the visual creativity. Zoe Saldana was fantastic, everyone else was just good.

Saw the movie yesterday, and this has probably been said many times before, and will be said many times from now:

Visually stunning, but plot was noble savage trash.

Dune did it better.

And in 12 years, Pandora is going to be nuked from orbit.

Any news released about how the movie has been doing this week? I know a lot of people that went this week through word of mouth; people that had no clue about the movie during its first weekend.

Check on the last page, near the bottom.

Delicious, delicious numbers.

avatar could drop 100% after it grosses $834,969,808 and I'd be happy because that's 1 dollar higher than ROTF.

ROTFL CANNOT be the top grossing film of 2009

I don't know if it'll get past TF2 in time for New Years...

Edit: And TF2 isn't the top grossing film of 2009. So...no worries?

It won't do it within the calender year though, does that count?

No, Eywa's going to open her vagina and she and the warheads are going to make sweet love. Grace will then emerge from Eywa's lifestream to summon Meteor which will destroy the invading humans. Grace will then merge her existence into Meteor and become JENOVA, who will then journey to Earth to destroy the human race through an immense impact to Yellowstone. Earth will go through major biological, geographical, and geological transformations and this will eventually tie Avatar into Final Fantasy VII.

How often does this happen? Where it makes more second weekend...

It basically doesnt. ESPECIALLY for blockbusters. Avatar am mini-Titanic confirmed. I LOVE how Cameron is going to have made the two highest grossing movies of all time (yes, Im saying Avatar will beat RotK's WW numbers). Truly a man who knows how to make movies that appeal to everyone.

Loved the movie. Tried watching it in Real D 3D at one of the front corner seats and couldn't do it. We got there 30 min in advance and it was packed beyond belief. We stuck it out like the manager asked because "it's 3d -- so it pops. It stick out and you be fine. trust me." Audio sucked and the image was blurry, so we got later tickets and arrived 45 minutes early only for it to be packed yet again, but we got decent seats this time, despite being the hundredth in line or so.

Love all that detail everyone is finding with foreshadowing. Was it just me, or was Jake's Avatar initially fairly lean, and in the scene where he becomes one of the NA'Vi, his body was completely buffed out?

Yeah.

He did mention in the movie how his Avatar was getting stronger (while looking more and more haggard in his human body).

Im finally (its been 6 days since my last - withdrawel total!) getting in my third Avatar viewing late this afternoon. Cannot wait. By the time Ive returned, the weekend box office estimates will have been out for a few hours, so I expect you guys to pick up the slack in the gloating area that I will not be able to provide :lol

Alan Sepinwall's mini Avatar review

http://sepinwall.blogspot.com/2009/12/at-movies-avatar.html

Merry Christmas to everyone who celebrates it! Last night, I undertook half of the traditional Jewish Christmas (the other half involves Chinese food) by going to the movies to see "Avatar," which I loved. Everything I'd heard about the story and characterizations were true, in that it's recycling a few dozen stories of allegedly cultured men discovering the nobility of the local savages (it's a little bit "Dances with Wolves," a little bit "Pocahontas," etc., etc.). Fortunately, everything I'd heard about the visuals (which I saw in 3D) was also true. The movie was just a treat for the senses for almost three hours, and the performances (particularly by Stephen Lang, who seems to be making a comeback after being off the radar for a long time, as the ruthless lead soldier) were good enough to compensate for most of the cliches.

We complain all the time about how the whole mainstream movie industry is designed to appeal to 14-year-old boys. For once, here was a movie that made me feel exactly like a 14-year-old boy, and I didn't mind a bit.

If you've seen it, what did you think?

Thought about sequel potential; if what's said in Pandorapedia is true there are probably about 4 ships in transit to Pandora at the end of the film, and there's no way they'll be turned around when they're travelling at 0.7c. In fact, until Venture Star (The one Jake arrives on and the humans are sent away in) gets back there probably will be more sent off. That means about 1000 marines and personal including avatars arriving on Pandora.

I really want more updates to Pandorapedia, the ISV Venture Star article is really interesting.

I think this can be attributed to the fact that the Avatars have a mix of both Human and Na'vi DNA.

That could be a reaching explanation though.

Umm, it isn't. Harry Potter out grossed ROTF by quite a bit.

don't give him ideas he might be reading this

on a related note aprerantly the book goes a bit deper into the whole mineral thingy and it's use on Earth, it says that most of Earths populations has a workplace 100 or 1000 of kms from where they live, the unobtanium being used for that fast tranport

so good going Jake for killing millions of humans in a global economic meltdown beacose you got to fuck a na'vi chick

Recession time brings out the big crowds to the box office!

The numbers are in, and this Christmas marks one of the highest grossing Christmas weekends at the movies of all time!

A reported $91 million was earned at the box office on Christmas day, up over $15 mil from 2008's earnings of $75 million on the 25th!

Guy Ritchie's Sherlock Holmes, starring Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law, brought in an impressive $24.8 million on Friday, beating out the numbers for Avatar, which only earned $23.5 million Christmas day.

Sorry James Cameron!

Rounding out the top 3, Alvin And The Chipmunks: The Squeakquel managed to earn $14.5 million on Friday, with an expected total of $43 mil by the holiday weekend's close!

Which holiday movie did U go see???

Lol, does he have some bug up his ass about Avatar? He even mentions Alvin's weekend projections but not that Avatar will beat Holmes...and both are from the same source :lol !

fuck a rational discussion about it ha? Better say something meaningless beacose you can't face the idea of someone saying that some things are off in your beloved Avatar

fact is Jake didn't spend 1s thinking about the consequences that a lack of Unobtanium would have on Earth
that's preaty fucking stupid
same as his battle "plan" that failed misserably and he only won beacose of a factor he didn't even consider when designing his plan

Your exaggerated argument is fail because it's pointed out that there are several reserves of unobtanium scattered all over Pandora, but RDA decides to exterminate an entire people just because it turns out they're living on one of the bigger ones. Nobody to blame for the outcome of the movie but RDA itself. Greed ftl motherfuckers!

What makes humans more important than another intelligent species anyway?

you do understand the problems of giving a steady suply of the mineral back to earth with the shit being scatered all over the place and everything including the na'vi wanting to kill you?

and the RDA didn't want to exterminate anyone, I tought the movie was quite clear in that regard

jett said:

train, baby, 5 people etc

note: I am not saying what the RDA did was right, what I am saying is that Jake should have tought about the consequences of his action for the 20 something billion people on Earth, most of which are compleatly innocent in the whole situation

I don't believe that ends justify the means, unlike you seemingly do. And I'd wager unobtanium is much important to RDA than it is to humanity anyway.

And I don't care about the plights of RDA and mankind anyway. :P

what the fudge are you talking about

Happy Holidays, Hollywood! Sherlock Dominates Avatar: Recession time brings out the big crowds to the box office! ... http://bit.ly/8fbIM7

Dominates?:lol

I hope they have all the missing scenes in final render quality. And I hope it's at least one more hour. Did someone say 4 hour cut? I can go with that! Can you imagine 4 hours of THAT awesome????

The beauty of it is that you just know that, when the extended ed. comes out on Blu-ray, they're gonna seize the chance to cash in a bit more by doing at least a limited release in theatres. And I'm gonna seize the chance to watch it once or twice more, ha!

Regarding the sequels, people are mentioning stuff like the humans coming back with nukes... first of all, I must mention again that those soldiers in the movie were not "Earth" or even any "nation's" soldiers, they were hired mercs, security forces of a corporation (which may well be more powerful than some countries but hey). This leads me to think... they packed the bad guys in a shuttle (I guess, since there's at least two that come with each ISV) and sent them away, unless I'm missing something. So, who went with them that can tell the "true story" when they get back on Earth? Because I'm thinking that if the truth came out on Earth it would look extremely bad for RDA, and things might change, like the whole Earth-Pandoran relationship might go from a RDA-Na'vi relationship to full blown Human-Na'vi, perhaps in trying to show them that not all humans are alike and restoring a good relationship between the species.

I'm thinking the sequels will center, at least at the beginning, on what exactly is the "Pandora brain", if it's something that evolved or was conceived by something else, some older race, that might eventually show up. I haven't finished either reading the script or the game but both have a lot of extra info that doesn't show up in the movie. I hope JC really surprises us in the next movies. :)

Whats going to happen in 6 years when the corporate guy gets back to earth and tells them how they got kicked off by a ruthless band of savages that raped and murdered everyone that didn't come back? The only ones that would speak against him stayed on Pandora. Its not like the Sioux beat Custer and the US said "Fuck it, you can have the Dakotas."

It was a piss poor strategy, and will only lead to ruin.

Heh if they rendered an extra hour of footage then Avatar would really become the most expensive movie of all time. :P

yeah, fuck 20 billion inncoent people beacose they aren't living in trees and loving nature, great logic there mate -.-

you didn't hear this one before? You have 2 train tracks, on one track there is a baby on the other 5 adult people, none of the will move off the train tracks by act of ROB* and there is a train incoming, you have to decide on which train track to reroute the train, do you kill the 5 people or the baby?

*edit: oh yeah people here don't know this one, ROB=random omnipotent being

There's going to be a sequel. You can write a sequel/fanfic of everything turning to shit with nukes if you want.

By the way, there seemed to be a lot of non military standing around. You can't say none of them wont tell the truth.

Raped and murdered? When did that happen? :P

And it was Earth's governments that demanded a peaceful means of communication with the Na'Vi...RDA is just a corporation. Truthfully I don't really care to talk about stuff that it isn't in the movie as I find that to be a massive waste of time.

We'll see what happens in the Avatar 2: The Naviquel.
