Unheard of. Most blockbusters drop 40-50% in the second week. It's even worse with sequels and genre movies. A 30% drop would have been very good for a SciFi movie like Avatar. -2.6% is incredible.
The interesting question is how much Avatar will make in 2009. It's the # 7 movie of the year at the moment. It will surpass Star Trek in a few days but there aren't enough days left this year for it to get in the top three. There's no doubt whatsoever that Avatar will make more than 300 million dollars. The only question is whether it will pass the 400 million dollar mark and surpass Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen as the overal US BO winner.
Jesus @ those numbers. And I keep having to remind myself that this is still, just the first damn week the movie's been out and only its second weekend.
Looks good for both Avatar sequels and Alita, I can't imagine FOX denying Cameron anything ever again now. Although, I suppose the studio will be wanting an Avatar sequel first and foremost. Though, I guess it will all come down to just what Cameron wants to do. All he's said so far is for his upcoming plans outside of his next deep-sea dive is writing the Novel for the first film and overseeing the home releases.

Heh, and just like Ghaleon said, that 255 mil. number is outdated by a few days I believe.
Edit: Ha, that's what I get for taking so long to write this. Updated numbers are incredible. :lol
On another topic, I yesterday mentioned Cinefex's Avatar article as being pretty awesome, when I had read about 10 pages (including ad pages). I still haven't read everything but I checked the article's lenght and it is FIFTY-TWO (52!!) pages of text with pics. Incredibly detailed. The article is phenomenal! I advise anyone who wants more info on how things were done and who did what, to spend $30 in a 4-issue digital subscription, as I did, and check it out.
Some tidbits that I recall, for example, Blur did the ISV and planets space shots, Framestore (UK shop) did interiors and some outside Hell's Gate stuff, like when Jake gets out of the Valkyrie shuttle or when Quaritch is talking to Jake while in the AMP suit ("your real legs" "yes sir!"), ILM did at least some stuff in the final battle, and probably others, since WETA just couldn't handle everything. The Dragon explosion is theirs (including, I believe, Quaritch escaping, my favorite action scene) and a lot of other scenes it seems. I gotta read back from the beginning and take notes lol.
I'm also including this pic I got from the article, not sure if it's at full res since I just took a screenshot and didn't try to rip the Flash. I think it's ok to post since it's from a "For Your Consideration" ad from Weta Digital for the Visual FX award (as if they haven't already won ha!). I really have to post it because...

Btw, they also mention Sigourney's Avatar face was the hardest to do because not only did they have to make it look like an 18 years younger Sigourney, but she had a "very narrow, patrician nose", and when they tried to use the wider Na'vi nose they'd lose the likeness.

Great box office. As someone who hated this movie, I'm still glad to see it do well, because it means people will take risks on more sci fi/fantasy big budget flicks and we might get some good ones as a result of bad ones like this making piles of money

Oh definitely. A lot of people are seeing Avatar in 3D and that adds to ticket costs, but it also proves the viability of the 3D movie beyond any doubt. It's raking in the money and it's probably doing so primarily through its 3D screens. Previous movies in 3D have been successful, but this is the first major movie that was built entirely for 3D (and has "must see it in 3D" hype surrounding it) and it's been an exceptional success.

I think the trend here is, the dirtier the characters look, the more real they look. Not that I'm saying the one Jett posted doesn't look real, it does.. but it has this rendered quality about it. Where as the "For Your Consideration" one looks like it was actually shot.
