I have been reading up on this thread ever so often, loving the craziness of it all

I love the universe Cameron has created

I'm playing Jame's Cameron Avatar: The Game, it really helps flesh out the movie + universe so much

I'm really liking it so far, so if you enjoyed the movie and starting to feel that itch to go back to Pandora, you can't go wrong with this game.

I agree...The game is in no way a great game or anything, but the scan feature (ala: metroid) is what makes it for me. I love reading everything about the plants, animals, etc. They went into some major detail.

I'm stuck as to what Avatar 2 could possibly be about. I loved the movie, and I cant wait for an extended version, but I don't know what a sequel would bring. Everything was pretty much wrapped up.

Avatar 2 will be out just in time for nuetrinos to boil the earths core and sink all the continents (:P)

No seriously though, 3 years to the day is my guess for Avatar 2. Camerons documentary project will fill up the next 12 months, release/promotion will likely eat up another 6 months. Sometime during those 18 months he'll have made a script treatment for avatar 2 and handed it off to some writers and somewhere late summer of 2011 (august/september) they'll start principle photography for the film. This will be a 3 month shoot followed by 6 months of preliminary special effects work, 1 month of extra shooting. Finally, if any of us thought the number of animators working on the first film was huge, wait'll you see the second one. I predict it'll be just as long, still be in 3d obviously but in order to get all the special effects finished , twice as many people will be needed. Despite this the lack of as much preproduction will lower the cost of the film, especially when the inflation rate is taken into account. I figure 200 million for the film itself.

ah conjecture.

Anyway, should things go well we'll see AVATAR 2 : DEEP BLUE SEA (you know it's going to involve the water this time as it's the only part of pandora they didn't spend much time on ) release Friday december 14th 2012.

The plot won't be a total cliffhanger like matrix or pirates or even back to the future but I can see the wait for the 3rd one being shorter as principle photography for it will start in the middle of 2012 when the bulk of avatar 2 work will be visual effects. It'll possibly make it out the following december but more likely come out may 2nd 2014 to start off the summer movie season that year and make every other studio reschedule their own projects.

That means, sadly the earliest we'll see james camerons BATTLE ANGEL is 2016 I think.

Has there been any post-opening weekend interviews with Cameron yet? Id love to hear his arrogant ass talking about the movie's success.

Cameron said he wants to explore the adjacent moons in Alpha Centauri A. The only question is how he will get Na'vi off planet.

Its not even worth thinking about atm

For now, all Im hoping for is a Blu-Ray release comparable to the LOTR Extended Cut releases. (tons of commentaries, documentaries, etc)

Yeah, I definitely had a WTF moment in my head trying to figure out how he's going to match exploring Polythemus' other moons with also following Jake and Neytiri (which he stated earlier). Honestly, I have a feeling he's just juggling a bunch of different ideas in his head atm and won't have anything solidified for a while, so now it's pretty useless speculating on the sequel, other than the fact that it exists and Cameron took some parts out of the scriptment for it.

But yeah, first thing on my mind is also the Extended Edition Blu-Ray, and the novel.

just watched it for the second time...the soundtrack is awesome <3 zoe's character is awesome. did the original actors made the voice of the na'vi?

and of course it was almost sold out. there were 3 tickets left. so me and my friends bought them. too bad we had to split in the theatre :D. but they loved it as well.

I saw this tonight (in 2D) and enjoyed it way more than I thought I would. I have to be honest and say that all of the internet hype actually had the opposite effect on me and I started to anticipate it being a big letdown, but it blew me away in a lot of ways.

Obviously the world of Pandora was what struck me the most. I loved how it was crafted, the creatures within it and the way in which everything was connected. Clearly a lot of effort went into the construction and I'll happily admit I sat there a lot of the time simply going "so prettyyyy" in my head. :lol

I felt the story dragged at times as I was watching it, but as it reached the conclusion I suddenly became very appreciative of the character building that took place. I'll spoiler the rest to be safe:
What really struck me was the way in which I loathed the humans. Usually it's okay to enjoy some people being killed because they are being killed by good people, but in this you have a whole other species doing the killing and it's completely justified. It was gut wrenching when the tree was burnt down and during the battle I was loving every single body that flew from the helicopters. In terms of characters the only one I truly felt for was Neytiri, who had a fantastic performance. The bad army dude was pretty damn fun to hate too, as generic as he was.

So yeah, it's definitely not the best film of the year, but it was much better than I expected. I quite regret the fact I couldn't see it in 3D as I'm sure it's awesome like that, but nevermind.
I think 3d makes a huge difference in this movie. Most of the story is told through the images on the screen and 3d enhances those images. I don't think this is the best movie of the year but I can see someone saying that.

Though I expect nothing less than a good movie from the sequels, I wonder if the novelty of the visuals will have worn off a bit. If this tech becomes inexpensive and widely used it could be in the wrong hands. I hope Avatar 2 cab still find a way to raise the bar a bit more.

I'm assuming that if anything, we'll see better visuals since they already have the tech in place as well as all of the current art assets, so essentially they can just keep tweaking and adding on to that instead of having to build from scratch. If Pandora is set to dominate the entire sequel, then there's huge potential there for simply showing us parts of it we haven't seen, both flora and fauna.

Plus I'm expecting superior 3D as the tech in general improves over time, and the original team will already have the experience of putting Avatar 1 in 3D behind them.

You know, more than an extended cut, Im praying for a COMPREHENSIVE documentary about the movie for the Bluray. Im talking Dangerous Days here (near 4 hour exhaustive doc for Blade Runner, for those who dont know).

The best part of that clip is the "you knew this would happen?" bit. Its 100% Zoe.
I'm hoping for a PiP blu-ray feature that compares the motion capture to the finished film (as well some of the early effects footage, concept art etc)

would be pretty cool

Actually fuck it, heres what I want on the Blu-Ray

- Main Feature with Director Commentary
- Extended Feature with Director and Cast commentary
- VFX commentary
- PiP motion capture, early footage vs final movie
- 3-4 hour documentary
- Additional deleted material

etc etc.

Make it so Cameron.

They will have slightly, but thats a good thing. Forces Cameron to push harder in the writing stages. Avatar's visuals married with a better script would be epic to the max.

Our luck, because it's FOX, we'll just get a barebones Blu-Ray/DVD next year with the special edition not until late 2011 or something. They gotta milk this for a while you know.

Im still a bit miffed why Sam couldnt have just used his normal accent. I dont recall the company being specifically American. My guess is that it was a studio mandate - either cast an American lead, or make whoever is cast use one.

Well it will already be milked with an initial 2D release and then 3D later

Cameron said he wanted the additional footage on the 2D release. Im hoping he can make it happen.

The release of this movie is probably what's going to tip me into getting a Blu-Ray player.
If the Blu-Ray extra contents are premium compared to the DVD ones, I might have no choice.

Just wanted to pop in and say that I saw Avatar in RealD 3D and I can honestly say it was the best blockbuster movie I have ever seen.

/bow to Cameron!

people that compare the sense of wonder with the first time you experienced the star wars universe are spot on!

The milking is part of the fun. I love the belly-aching of fans.

Cameron never gives specific answers about his next project. Its rather maddening :lol
He's mentioned Avatar 2 if the first one did well (lol) and Battle Angel as well. One thing that seems to be fixed is that they will reused the technology used in Avatar for the subsequent movies. Cameron mentioned how the R&D costs of Avatar will be amortized with the future movies.

Re: Worthington's accent - am I the only one who thought it was even worse in Terminator? :lol

I did too - odd, since Terminator was shot a year later. I just wish they'd drop this idiocy fullstop. We live in a pretty open world now, culturally speaking. Actors shouldnt have to put on a fake accent unless its demanded of the character. Which, in the case of Sam's roles in TS and AVTR, it isnt.

The conservative/ass backwards stance of studios about these kind of issues is mindboggling. This isnt 1955 - audiences WILL accept non-Americans.

Solo said:
But realistically, I dont think Cameron will actually write the book.

Probably not. Maybe some anime Avatar shows. I can live with that.

Since this movie is called Avatar. There has to be some avatars in the sequel. Also some new human the audience can relate to. I am guessing since they have Jake's brother's DNA, they will clone him.

Also I demand more Aliens regular to come back. Bill Paxton to be the next suit bean counter please.

Avatar was pretty fantastic. It's amazing just how much of the movie is completely CGI, and often you'll find yourself realizing, "Oh, yeah, that isn't real." Cameron is a helluva director and hits all the emotional beats. The story doesn't hold any surprises or go anywhere you think it won't, but it's a solid script.

Yeah I know the talk, but like

it's infuriating, over the last few years there has been

Doing Battle Angel then Avatar
Avatar then Angel
a true lies sequel had some rumours years back (after he did his docos but before avatar)
Avatar sequels after avatar
Avatar then angel then avatar sequels
avatar trilogy then angel trilogy
avatar then another documentary then avatar 2

It's not like I even care which he chooses, I just want to know :(

Excuses like adjusted numbers, 3D inflated prices etc go wear the dunce cap and cry in a corner.

What's week -1?

You don't understand, you NEED to see it in 3D, somehow. The 3D is unlike any 3d you may have seen in the past. You don't feel like you're on the outside looking into Pandora, you feel like you're actually in it. I don't know if you're over 25 or not, but if you are, it's the same feeling you got when you saw Jurassic Park for the first time.

Cannot stress it enough. I've seen some 3D in my time on huge IMAX screens, I actually felt INSIDE this world following behind the characters, it was very awesomah powah

It must be an IMAX-only experience because I sure didn't feel like this in RealD or Dolby3D theaters.

Conversely, having seen quite a few movies in RealD before, I wasn't blown away by it. Certainly the best usage of 3D I've seen thus far, but I didn't find it leaps and bounds ahead of other 3D releases.

3D just isn't that immersive an experience. I've only seen Avatar in 3D and while I love how Cameron used it, I don't think it would lose all that much in 2D. There are a couple of unbelievably well composited 3d shots but unfortunately the whole movie isn't like that.

My dad keeps asking me to see this again. We saw it in IMAX the first time (2nd time for me) and he wants to see what 2D is like. Is it worth it?

sam worthington's accent is pretty coarse, even by aussie standards. i'm glad they forced him to do an american accent, or i'd be imagining him buying a carton at a rockingham tavern for the whole movie.

I dont read comics/manga, so as far as Im concerned, Battle Angel can GTFO too.

I don't have any idea what Battle Angel is either :lol But it sounds cool, and Avatar has a boring mythology. I'd rather see something new.
