I have pretty no expectation nor hype, other than it's gonna be great action movie and some nice new technology... Of course I hope to be blown away, but luckily my hype meter has been pretty indifferent.

I don't think I'll be watching it on opening weekend, probably the following week just to avoid all the immediate palaver.

I think I may end up not being able to fully enjoy it as I need to wear glasses at the cinema and the 3d ones my local cinema give you just don't work with it at all and I get a headache :(

Why not just watch a digital 2D screening?

Watching at IMAX Greenwich (London) on the 17th! All booked and ready to go baby! :D

Did you book these a long time in advance?
I remember trying to book tickets about 3 or 4 weeks ago and all the good seats at the early showings were gone :(

In the end I had to settle for the Odeon in Camden, but that means I do get to see it on the 16th :D

Booked several weeks ago (well a friend did). I believe we got some fine seats from what I can remember. But he's been on everything Avatar since day one. And you get to see it on the 16th?! Haaaw! Is the Camden one 3D/Digital?

I'd love to see the movie, but since I don't see any cinemas in Saudi Arabia. I don't think i will for a while.

I want to see it in 3D, are there any 3D cinemas in Bahrain?

Yeah there are a few Odeon cinemas showing it on the 16th (apparently that’s the world premiere date according to wiki.) It's only showing once that day at 8:45.
It's in 3D and I checked on the Odeon website and apparently they used RealD technology - I think that's the good/newer one?

I do intend to see it at the IMAX as well at some point, but will prob wait until new year to do so

Same here. i saw the second trailer and i'm curious, but it didn't blow me away or anything, but it's James Cameron and i figured i've wasted money on far less. Aside from the second trailer and one additional shot, i've seen no other media on it. i'm trying to go in pure.

What kinda sucks is that i've got to scrounge up a date seeing as how i instinctively got two tix. Or not; it's a midnight showing which will make it a little difficult to find someone to accompany me and i'd rather watch it alone for the first time to reduce distractions.

So I saw a TV spot yesterday..and I pretty much laughed out loud that it started with something like

"IN ANOTHER WORLD" ...I mean could you get more cliche?

and then it ended with something like "The movie will change everything" or something..

laying it on a little thick don't you think?

EDIt...also..how can we have a Rotten Watch when there are NO reviews? I saw this and got excited that we might have some ACTUAL reviews in a Rotten Tomatoes thread..BOY was I wrong.

The only problem with the Camden screen is that you've got to put up with all the people. I like Camden but it has to be the rowdiest cinema I've been in :(

Good man, that film looks awesome :)

I thought the trailer was crap tbh. Assumed I was going to love it, but it just lacked panaz and humour. Parts were on the verge of being funny but not quite there. Earning only a half assed limp "ha" from me from time to time and not much else.

Hopefully the movie itself is tighter.

I'm glad I'm rich as fuck and have lots of free time to watch films. I can see both.

:lol Ditto.

By rich, I mean I've got 20 bucks and 2 weekends to see both films.

A bit off topic but, from the Sigourney Weaver interview:

In the meantime, Weaver has been living in the future by promoting “Avatar” and getting ready to revisit her past – she will be sitting down in the weeks to come to watch all of “Alien” films as part of the process of recording commentary for the upcoming Blu-ray release of the trilogy.

:lol

no love for Whedon's piece of crap?

I didn't really think of that :lol
I'm hoping very first Avatar showing on a Wednesday evening will be mostly filled up with sci-fi geeks and Cameron fans.

Oh I'm sure that's what I'll end up doing, just a tinsy bit of annoyance I get to take part in the 3D hype that is being thrown around it. Plus all my friends I've spoken to are going to a 3D one so I can't join them. Fuck them and their 20-20 vision.

same here. And I've actually seen 3D movies on the latest, greatest technology...

My biggest hope for AVATAR, because I'm not really hyped on it, is that it'll show me why 3D is important for movies. It's hard to imagine what it could do to prove that, but I can't wait to see.
What Cameron isn't telling us is that the theatrical release is going to be in 4D...like those Disney shows where whatever happens on screen personifies itself in the theatre, whether that's wind blowing in the theatre to rats running under your seat to sneeze phlegm shooting at you.

There's going to be a scene where the protagonist gets his head blown off execution style and his face gibs will actually shoot all over the audience in the form of raw ground beef.

$300 million dollar budget, $200 million of it to fund Operation Beef-Face.

BELGIUM 16/12/2009

HOLLAND 17/12/2009

wtf

Not all that weird really. Belgium is usually earlier with film premieres than The Netherlands.

Anyone else think the whole: "From the director of Titanic" line is really badly chosen? I mean, people who would be interested in a film like Avatar don't care about Titanic, they might even despise it. They should've focused on Aliens and Terminator instead.

They CAN'T ignore Titanic! 80% of the target audience for this film is folks under 24, ALL of whom were too young to see ANY Cameron film in the theaters with the possible exception of Titanic. Heck, I bet that outside of the geek community Cameron has almost no name recognition, he has been away for far, far too long. Playing up Terminator and Aliens only works on those old enough to remember T2 as anything but an old Schwarzeneggar film playing on TBS, much less the 80's films. Seems like The Abyss and True Lies are almost completely forgotten, though I expect F/X to start running Cameron films back to back starting next week to raise up his public awareness.

All of the commercials I've seen this week just mentions Aliens and Terminator 2.

I can't help but picture him every time Lang speaks.

After the Abyss, Biehn should have played the villain in every Cameron movie (except True Lies for obvious reasons, although, actually that would have been awesome), if not the hero. Still can't believe he took Billy Zane over Biehn for Titanic.

Although Lang is still good. One of the best things in Public Enemies.
It's flawed but still a good movie, dammit! /cry

Mentioned "From the director of Titanic" is so important, though. It shows that this guy has more depth than just some random action movie director, and can bring the substance with the characters as well.

Ignoring the most successful movie of our generation doesn't really make sense, even if the genre is slightly different.

I'm actually not hyped at all about this movie, despite Aliens and T2 being among my all-time favorite movies. But of course I will be seeing it. Will be in a regular theatre though, no 3d theatres within a couple of thousand miles.
