I've decided that I would be happy with Cameron doing The Last Train to Hiroshima next.

Would I be as happy as him doing Battle Angel next? Of course not - not even close.
But I'd certainly prefer he do that next as opposed to The Dive and I think he needs a break in between AVATAR films.

I think it would suit him very well.

Holy crap, WTH. I missed out on taking my wife to see Avatar during the holiday break cuz it was constantly sold out at least 24 to 48 hours in advance. I figure we'd see it this weekend but already Saturday is sold out and we can't go on Sunday. Thankfully, I've seen it but at this rate she may never get to see it in IMAX 3D. Amazing at how well it's doing, but good god, I can't believe it was sold out for tomorrow earlier today already.

This movie is SO unbelievable.

We just ordered 3 tickets for a 3d screening at 16.30 and there´s only a third or so of the seats pre-ordered (so around 250) BUT try and get a ticket for a show starting later today, maybe if you sit down in the emergency exit :lol

But I still want to know which Pandoran animal has feathers. Anyone? Stop ignoring me ;_;

:lol

Seen this last night, all I've got to say is wow, the immersion from the 3d is incredible , movie had me wanting to experience pandora first hand. One of the best movies I've ever seen easily. I'll let it marinate a few days to see where it stands on my list.

That fourth weekend record is going to fall quite easily (no move has made $30M, let alone $40M+). The real test is the fifth weekend record (where Titanic actually increased).

From the numbers that've been reported so far ($13.x million on Friday- up from syllogism's figure), AVATAR looks like it's headed for between a $45 and $50 million weekend. This will be its fourth weekend. Anything above $45 million will not only set the record for the highest fourth-weekend total (which currently sits at $28 million, with Titanic coming just slightly ahead of Spider-Man), but will also break the previous third-weekend record ($45 million, held by Spider-Man). That's a studio executive's wet dream. Say what you will about 3D ticket prices inflating the total numbers, but this is unprecedented.

so i saw this movie again last night (the first time i was 2 weeks out of brain surgery, so things were a bit...fuzzy). the theater at 7:40, Real 3D, was PACKED. isn't this the 4th weekend for this movie? it was in the largest theater in the 16-theater building, the "super-sized" room, and it was PACKED. wth?

$430 production + marketing.

But really $280, I don't know why Avatar is the only movie where the marketing is added to the "budget."

Bigger impact?

"Holy crap! That movie cost half a billion"

Not true at all.

Since NPDs have become too predictable I have missed the taste of those bitter tears.

Thank you.

Also whenever it is brought up that this movie is breaking revenue records, there is always someone pointing out "It is only making that much because 3d tickets are pricier." One site actually did the math and took the average ticket increase away and this film still has records. Anyone know where that was that took the cost advantage away in their calculations?

I agree. Let's just add the marketing budget to all films and see how people complain then. I think people just want to see Cameron fail.

This also ignores the fact that there have been other 3D movies released that have not made as much money by a long shot.

Kind of like crying about Wii Play being number one becasue it "CHEATED" by including a free controller. If it is so easy to make it to number one by using such a "gimmick," then why doesn't it happen more often?

Or why dont we discount all the extra money Dark Knight made from its IMAX screens? I dont hear anyone calling for that. Or Star Trek or Transformers 2. (Although the fact that Transformers 2 is one of only a few films to make $400 million still saddens me).

Another way to think of Avatar's success in 3D (or any movie in 3D, or IMAX for that matter): they have come up with a product that is good enough that people are willing to pay a premium for it. This is not a reason to dock that premium from the "true" measure of the film's success.

Okay, I can't take this anymore. I must know.

Dookkake, who is that guy in your avatar? Is it James Purefoy?

It's me.

Smarmy producer from the Jesus at Washington painting. I wish I knew what the painting was called, but I am sure you've seen it here. There is also a version of the painting where Jesus has been turned in to Cthulhu and all the humans are deformed or bloody. I wish my avatar would flash between the two versions. One day!

Because it allows haters to downplay it's success, ie " Number 2 WW? Bu-bu-bu-but it's still way behind domestically and it cost half a billion to make."

STFU

Yup. And then once it takes the top spot or the number two spot, the argument will be "well adjusted for inflation it is not that high!"

But if you adjust for inflation, Dark Knight falls pretty far on the list.

Man, it's too bad they don't sell programs in the U.S. or Canada like they do in Japan (I don't know about other countries).

For ¥600, you get an awesome book with some nice images and information about the cast and characters. I'm probably going to see the film in theaters one more time, so if I had enough requests, I'd gladly pick up a few programs for forum members.

I think that what's even better is that the movie was already bound to break even for FOX even before it was released. Partners paid a shitload of money to be associated with the franchise. Walking down the aisles of CES, rumors had it that Panasonic paid between 10 and 20 million dollars to get the chance to drop he Avatar name everywhere and make it look like the movie was shot thanks to them (which is not the case). I don't doubt that number one bit and they are far from the only ones.

Alrighty then, I will.

I'll take the first five requests! ¥600 + ¥1200 EMS shipping via PayPal. Might seem a bit pricey because of the shipping, but the program is fantastic.

I'll take one if it's not to late. I'll pay a bit more if needed =)

So, I saw this in 2D and liked it... have a chance to see it in 3D this weekend.

Real3D vs Imax 3D

Trying to decide which.

Seems to me Real3D is sharper/brighter than Imax 3D, but then, the last Imax 3D I saw was Superman Returns.

Also, I heard there are aspect ratio differences between the two... anyone know what the film's intended aspect ratio is?

That is where it gets tricky. The film was shot in 1.78, but framed for a 2.35 image. Everything but IMAX is in 2.35. IMAX is in 1.78. Everything Cameron has done after Aliens is 2.35, but the VHS versions were open matte, meaning there was more information on the top and bottom.

I would go with Real D, just for the sharper picture and better glasses. And since the majority of the screens showing this and the eventual DVD release will be in 2.35.
