You say that now, but just wait 2 weeks. Going for my fifth viewing today. Which sucks because its fucking boiling outside and I'd rather go to the beach. But alas, the tickets are booked!
It's hot where you live? Lucky bastard. Cold as shit here.

Was planning on seeing it today with some friends in IMAX (they already had their tickets), but I waited too long and now it's sold out. Would have been my third viewing, first in IMAX.

Maybe next weekend, I have a few friends who haven't seen it yet...

So, what happened to all the "mainstream audiences will never accept a movie about furry sex" peoples? What kind of crow do they get to eat? :D (Note that I have never and still don't consider the Na'vi to be "furry")

Saw it with a friend at Imax in King of Prussia PA. Huge screen is good, but glasses are uncomfortable and image is never crisp. There's always this sheen around the edges of everything. It's distracting. My brain started to filter it out around 30 minutes in, but it never really goes away. We had central seats, but we were a little closer to the screen than I would have liked. Dunno if that's the reason.

Taking my wife to see it in RealD tonight. I read the image is crisper, so I'm looking forward to it.

The plot is pretty bad. Offensively bad in the last third. The art direction, particularly the human technology is beautiful. Except for the Avatar itself, Cameron's vision of future technology is refreshingly believable. With all the visual spectacle, I was really disappointed with the soundtrack. Cheesy, generic symphony flourishes did the film no favors. A more eclectic soundtrack from a modern composer would have added a lot to the whole "Future of Cinema" narrative surrounding this movie.

good movie. says in a subtle way 'yes, indigenous people of the Americas, Afrika and Asia, we ravaged you real good. sorry about that'.

i think i'll go watch it again tomorrow, this time in 2d. the 3d clearly needs more than a generic-size pair of polarized glasses to be enjoyed.

ps: fight terror with terror!

He didn't even do the most obvious one.

Avatar

Glory

And the music when the Dragon is going down and Quaritch is jumping into the AMP suit is straight out of both Aliens and Titanic. (And half the Aliens score was lifted from The Wrath of Khan.)

I dig Horner's style, but he's been doing scores by assebly for a couple decades now. :lol

subtle? :| ... :lol

One of my favorite leftist intellectuals, Slavoj Zizek says that liberal multiculturalism perpetuates racism by reinforcing the idea that there's some deep abyss between peoples. Like the motivations and rationality of an indigenous African are fundamentally different from yourself. I'm very curious what he would say about the Na'vi! :lol

For the most part I agree, except for how humans with fusion and anti-matter technology somehow can't recycle their garbage and produce clean, renewable energy.

But that would ruin the overbearing hyper-environmentalist message :D

Has anyone here seen Avatar in Xpand? How does it compare to rest of the tech?

My co-workers said with the Xpand, their eyes didn't get tired at all (which was a problem I had with both RealD and IMAX3D). I might want to check it out with them again since I've been meaning to catch this again anyways.

I know it will be too much to ask from a hippie like Cameron but I really really hope he tones this stuff down in the sequels (you made your damn point pretty well already!). This and the all the parallel comments ("shock and awe") jarred me out of the experience completely. Definitely the worst section of the film (post hometree/pre battle)

What will be the cheapest way to watch this movie in 3D at home?

ViewSonic VX2265wm FuHzion 22-Inch LCD Monitor

+

nVidia Geforce 3D Vision Kit

= $428

Not a bad price for a 3D setup, but I susepct you'd have to want to play games in 3D before you really thought it was worth throwing down the money.

If the glasses for 3D home viewing cost $150, I fail to see how this tech is going to make any headway though.
Doesnt look like that kit will be enough to watch Avatar in 3D, I think the Nvidia glasses only work with games and not movies?

Watch movies in 3D
Fully supports 3D video players such as 3dtv Stereoscopic Player, allowing you to view fullscreen 3D movies. Futureproof your system for the next generation high definition 3D movie formats with superb high definition video playback on GeForce GPUs.

Obviously it's all contingent on FOX providing a 3D version of the movie for digital or retail distribution, but I don't see why it isn't possible.

I don't see how you can say it's "tracking" to do $50-55m (-27% to -20%), that seems more like wishcasting even if it's possible it will do that based on how often it has surpassed expectations before. However, $45-50m is much more reasonable based on its performance this week.

I just heard the same trumpet piece in the Mask of Zorro which is on TV. Checked Wikipedia, holy fucking shit, it's Horner! Talk about being fucking lazy :lol
I'm also watching it :lol . Are you from Quebec by any chance?

As for Horner, I couldn't care less if he uses his 4-notes motif in most of his scores. As long as the core his compositions are original, it doesn't bother me much.

Yep, it was on TVA :p

I have to admit that it loved the piece when I heard it in my first viewing of Avatar (when the Na'vis start to lose the war).

Interesting image I haven't seen before:

Screenshot2010-01-09at73245PM.png

Sometimes throughout the movie, it was hard to see the resemblance. But this makes it look kinda obvious.

Anyone got a shot of Quaritch giving his first big lecture?

I think Cameron may have hidden a reference to Patton in there.

If I am correct, you will have a laugh when you see it.

Half of that poster is from Terminator Salvation, its not official

Saw this today, I was unsure going in but I loved it, somewhat predicatable and borrows a lot from the likes of Fern Gully and Pocahontas but it didn't bring it down at all for me.

Stunning film.

3. The film really only showed about half of Jake's training to become a Na'vi. There were several other rituals Jake had to participate in for him to be deemed worthy as a a Na'vi. Uniltaron or Dream Hunt is a ritual as important for a teenage Na'vi as Iknimaya. In Uniltaron Jake has to make a stone jar and then capture an arachnoid to store in the stone jar. The arachnoid's venom is used to give Jake a dream vision that is supposed to reveal his spirit animal. Besides this Jake was supposed to become a master at riding the direhorse to engage in a sturmbeest hunt. Lastly Jake was to be shown making a bow from the branch of Hometree which would complete his training and make him an adult Na'vi.

I must see this

Your math makes no sense. Your weekend estimate has the movie at $425M. Where are you pulling $438M from? I think you're adding Friday in there twice.

I thought GAF BO armchair experts wouldnt notice it. :P

It's understandable though, coz if he's like me, he's in such a HURRY to see Avatar blow by TDK's numbers and pass Titanic... :lol

Has anyone mentioned the mobile phone vibrate noise (that is played during Jungle scenes) in this thread yet?

Every time I hear it I think it's my phone.

And what would this be for Worldwide?

I have a spoiler question. Probably real obvious, but I missed it.

How do the Navi know/speak english?
Grace ran a school before the times of the movie where she taught them. They've passed it along to each other since I'd assume.

Grace had a school where she taught some of the Na'vi how to speak English

Theres a few lines about it in the movie, but theres a whole kind of subplot about the school that was cut from the movie unfortunately
