bud said:damn. titanic used to have the best 4th weekend with a gross of $28.7m.

Avatar makes $48.5M this wknd, -29%, for $429M in 24 days. #1 film from 2009. #7 alltime domestic passing Pirates2.
WKND BO: Avatar $48.5M/$429M, Sherlock $16.6M/$165.2M, Alvin $16.3M/$178.2M. Same Top 3 for 3 wks, huge $772M combined.
New Films: Daybreakers $15M wknd/$5946 avg, Leap Year $9.2M/$3650, Youth in Revolt $7M/$3737.
Even better:gdt5016 said:I just read this bit:
Avatar 22-Day Total:$393,815,000
The Dark Knight 22-Day Total: $423,088,829
hmm
The gap will be gone between them soon with Avatar pulling ahead. The sky is the limit for this film. Just has a wall in it's way on march 5th with Alice in wonderland.GhaleonEB said:Wow. Avatar made more than all the new releases combined. Not looking good for Eli next week.
Even better:
TDK 4th Saturday: $10.5m
Avatar 4th Saturday: $22m
Difference: 109%
Yeah. I just realized it's got a 4-day holiday weekend again next week. Who knows what the heck it can do at this point. :lolSomnia said:The gap will be gone between them soon with Avatar pulling ahead. The sky is the limit for this film. DanielPlainview said:48.5 mil this weekend, 29 percent drop, not bad! Same top 3 for 3 wknds in a row. :lol Can Eli change it?
Solo said:Fuck no, Eli wont change it. No amount of self-shilling from Mr Whitta will have any effect. Avatar is going to roll over Eli, and take the fifth weekend record at the same time.
So we're less than $30M from TDK now, eh? Not bad! Was just a week ago when it was over $40M between the two.
Avatar is going to do 40m on the 3 days next weekend. Eli will do 25 tops. Heavy R rated film In january.gdt5016 said:Eh, I think Eli might top it next week.
I don't know about it's legs, but it might take #1 next week.
Eli can do upto 40 and Avatar will be slightly higher I think. Remember, its an extended 4 day (MLK) weekend.Somnia said:Avatar is going to do 40m on the 3 days next weekend. Eli will do 25 tops. Heavy R rated film In january.
Yeah. Denzel's box office draw is over-rated, and it's an R-rated post apocalyptic action movie when there have been a few of them released lately.DanielPlainview said:yeah, look at Denzel Washington BO-wise: http://boxofficemojo.com/people/chart/?id=denzelwashington.htm
All of his movies have made less than $23.4M, except the following:
America Gangster - $43,565,115
Inside Man - $28,954,945
1 of those had Ridley Scott and Russell Crowe behind it as well. The other was released late March and had zero competition. I just don't see Book of Eli doing better than those.

It's for movies released in 2009. Transformers 2 was the highest grossing film of the calendar year 2009, and Avatar is the highest grossing film released in 2009.adg1034 said:How does that work? Avatar's $429 million figure is up through today. Which is 2010. I'm confused.
Simple; all movies released in 2009. Its always been that way.adg1034 said:How does that work? Avatar's $429 million figure is up through today. Which is 2010. I'm confused.
Way too far, 10th week. Avatar will be toppled from #1 before that I think.GuessWho said:Shutter Island

Ya I was only speaking about the 3 days not the 4 days. Eli will do 32ish tops in 4 days IMO but we shall see.irfan said:Eli can do upto 40 and Avatar will be slightly higher I think. Remember, its an extended 4 day (MLK) weekend.
StoOgE said:It's a kids movie starring the Rock. The track record there is pretty decent.

P.S Eli a 25m is a low estimate
koam said:The rock is the tooth fairy? Oh how low have we fallen :lol
DanielPlainview said:Jan 29th - Edge of Darkness (will bring in Taken crowd w/ Mel Gibson and director of Casino Royale)
Feb 5th - From Paris With Love (Taken director and Travolta)
Feb 12th - Percy Jackson, Wolfman (will be a disaster)
Feb 19th - Shutter Island (FINALLY!)
Feb 26th - Cop Out/Crazies
March 5th - Alice In Wonderland will kick Avatar outta IMAX.
3D will take over simply because of the massive amounts of money it generates. Avatar played on 800 fewer screens and it still breezed past ROTFirfan said:![]()

Trailers are utterly weird, but have kids laughing their asses off. The Rock does mostly kids movies these days, and most of them do very well.koam said:The rock is the tooth fairy? Oh how low have we fallen :lol
Wouldn't that be an increase from last weekend? I guess it would be consistent with the 3x multiplier we've been seeing during the week, but still... it doesn't really make sense to me.Variety said:The normally sluggish January box office came alive as 20th Century Fox's "Avatar" remained a powerhouse, grossing an estimated $48.5 million domestically and another $143 million overseas for a worldwide cume of $1.34 billion in only its fourth frame.
Sharp said:Um, Variety's overseas weekend gross can't be right, can it?

It opened in only two that I am aware of, Italy and China.DanielPlainview said:Well it just opened in some countries, right? Seems possible.

Yeah, if this number is correct Titanic worldwide and overseas is completely toast and there should be no argument otherwise unless you want to start talking about "b-b-but tickets sold and 3D surcharge" in which case go masturbate to Gone With The Wind.StoOgE said:Titanic had a good run.
It needs what 450 million of so from this point on? Throw in the US number and it will have nearly a 200 million dollar weekend.
