what is 'confirmed great'? Is there some shadow council that confirms something is great, where after you accept this judgment as universal and submit to your beheading? If it hits 95% and above on rottentomatoes, do we certify it as objective fact and all who deny it must join some leper colony?

This thing to separate groups into 'haters' and 'lovers' is crazy anyway. I like James Cameron, but think this movie is not appealing for various reasons. Does that make me a hater? It seems there are a lot of people in on this level.

I agree with you. Love Cameron but nothing I have read or seen has got me excited to watch this movie.

I really wanted the story in this to be good.

Guess I'll just wait for Abyss 2.

I want a link to a credible source like Fandango or similar saying Avatar is tracking currently for an 40M opening weekend. I know how box-office works, I'm a regular in the BOM derby forum, okthxbye.

I'll ask this again:

I'm still waiting for jett an his friends to come to the table about the 40M tracking thing. What a bunch of morans. :lol :lol :lol

Yep, I can confirm Rodriguez is awesome in the movie. I normally don't like her. Lang is unimaginably awesome though.
I continue to be impressed by how strong Cameron's casting instincts are. This is the guy that made Tom Arnold awesome. Somehow.

CAMERON IS BACK!

Twitter reactions:

@Massawyrm, "So I just got back from a movie. It was pretty great...if by pretty great I mean OMFGHOLYFUCKINGSHITOMGOMGOMG. Because that's what it was."

@Merrick, "My eyeballs were just sodomized by this crazy little movie. An enjoyable experience."

@petershall: “The AVATAR buzz is an understatement. That movie was unbelievable.”

@chasewhale: “Just finished AVATAR. Special effects were top notch. The movie ran a little long for my likings but I liked it!”

@comingsoonnet” “Okay, about Avatar?…. WOWOWOWOWOWOWOWOWOWOW! Unbelievable… amazing.”

@MikePereira21: Was blown away by Avatar! For 150 minutes, I was a kid again. Thank you James Cameron! BTW, the groundbreaking 3D was mindblowing.”

@rejects: “I’m not supposed to talk about Avatar… That said, it was a spectacular experience. Like nothing I’ve seen before.”

@markwalters74: “Just saw AVATAR. Not allowed to talk about it yet. Not allowed to say how it’s an amazing visual feast, or that Jimmy C’s still got the gift.”

@dmann11: “Holy effing crap!!! Avatar was FREAKING AWESOME KICK ASS SWEET!!!!!”

@TheGate: “For the record ‘Avatar’ was worth the $400 million, and no it is not even remotely “vomit inducing”.

Context of gif: Harrison Ford on Conan. They have a fan come out to do the Indiana Jones quiz and the fan proceeds to ask him about the specifics of the whip used in Raiders of the Lost Ark (length, material type).

And yes, everything I've seen of Rodriguez has been ace and I'm never worried with a casting decision from Cameron.

Would you have ever believed someone if they told you, prior to release, that Tom Arnold stole True Lies from Schwarzenegger?

Hey! HEY! Tom was great, but let's not get ahead of ourselves. You of all people should know the best part was Paxton. Then Schwarzenegger. Then Arnold.

@massawyrm: "So I just got back from a movie. It was pretty great...if by pretty great I mean OMFGHOLYF**KINGSH*TOMGOMGOMG. Because that's what it was ... Oh, and if I hear one more "Dances with Wolves" joke I'm gonna throw up in my mouth. Has no one seen DUNE? Because this was DUNE. In a good way ...You have officially been to your last Con in which blue people, spoken Navi and the word "hometree" were absent."

@firstshowing: James Cameron is a freakin' genius! I can't say much but wow, I loved it. #Avatar was phenomenal, pretty much blew me away

@DrewAtHitFix: I think the most accurate way to say it would be OMFGOMFGOMFG. Or words that effect. #avatar

@EDouglasWW: I'll take my chances with Fox legal.... Avatar was amazing, I loved it!

@rejects It's impossible to say that something is a "gamechanger" or that it will "redefine" movies. But I can say that I've seen something I've never seen before. And that I've seen something that shows the potential for the craft of filmmaking in this new century.

@sizemore So *that* was James Cameron's AVATAR. Holy f**king f**k.

@JonTT Avatar = outstanding. Really. Truly. See it. Soon.

@slashfilm I'm not allowed to say anythng about what I thought of Avatar, but saw it in a screening room with neill blomkamp, who didn't sign an NDA. He loved it... I will say this, it's hard to disagree with Neil :)

@LarsenOnFilm First Impression: Avatar. Stronger story than I expected, amazing visuals. Still no need for 3-D though. Full review next week.

@simonpegg Avatar ........................ tweetless. Just tweetless in the best possible way.

@johndollin Such a small word to describe a huge film 'EPIC', I entered a dream and didn't want to return. 3D just made it all the more real.

Cameron? Cameron's crazy! He can't even come up with an original film title himself, much less make a cinema changing masterpiece.

Best Picture? Jeez, I'm off of GAF for a little while, everyone gets delusions of grandeur!

But Paxton wasn't a surprise performance (like Lang's performance is probably not in question). Rodriguez and Arnold are just a better comparison, not necessarily better performances.

When Avatar: The Last Airbender started airing and I saw it listed in a TV guide, my first thought was, 'Avatar...Like Cameron's Avatar?' I had the opposite experience of everyone complaining that JC 'stole' the title.

The Academy has taken a lot of shit over the recent years for not awarding movies that are popular, culminating in the outrage over TDK not even being nominated for last year. They have been making a conscious effort to win these viewers back as evidenced by the additional 5 BP nomination slots. They're obviously trying hard to court mainstream moviegoers and if this movie does well at the box office and is a critical success it would make sense for them to give it to Avatar given their behavior this year, especially since it has Cameron at the helm which would make it sit well with Academy members (well at least more so than if it was directed by an unproven director). I'd see them giving it to a successful Avatar before they gave it to Star Trek, Basterds or Up, that's for sure.

Basically, I see the Academy bending over backwards this year to give awards to crowd pleasers wherever they possibly can and if this movie does well it seems like the path of least resistance among that ilk.

What are all the haters going to do if this movie is confirmed as indeed great, as the early indicators seem to be pointing toward?
Meh, I remember when critics and everyone else went apeshit over the Spider-Mans and Star Trek and I hated them. We'll see.

I want Avatar to do good because I want to see more sci-fi movies in general. At the same time I don't want it to win a tainted Academy award, which is exactly what it would be if it won by the circumstances you just laid out.

Nope. Neither are likely to win, but Basterds has a much better shot at winning best picture than AVATAR does.

I'm noticing a trend with the reviews.

All of them raise that the story is unoriginal and predictable, but are captivated nonetheless. It's Cameron's touch I tell ya.

If Avatar lives up, as it seems to have, then what an absolutely kickass year for sci-fi between Avatar, District 9 and Moon.

Exactly. They run the entire spectrum from true sci-fi with Moon to fantasy sci-fi with Avatar.

You would probably cite Academy members shying away from the sci fi angle or the blue aliens in this argument.

In mine I would cite the Academy members shying away from the incredibly brutal violence. I think that trumps the blue aliens and sci fi and Avatar will get Academy points having a familiar story (from what I've seen, similarities to
Pocahontas
at its core.

Just like Titanic, and that movie didn't do well at all now did it...

I would cite the Sci-Fi case, yes. But that is not the main reason for my thoughts. It is Cameron. So many Academy-going folk blew his oscar speeches out of proportion and he's been forever seen in their eyes as an arrogant 'I'm the king of the world' director. I don't think they'd give it to him a second time after Titanic's night.

Brutal Violence? Basterds isn't even that violent
by Tarantino standards lol
- and violence didn't stop plenty of other movies from getting the nod before. IMO Saving Private Ryan was waaaay more violent than Basterds.

I just don't see how its going to win a best pic when every review so far says that its story is weak.

That was over a decade ago. They'll forgive him, especially when he goes on the "campaign trail" so to speak and makes amends.

My favorite quote from a review so far is:
It's a 3D movie people will look back on in years to come to comment on how it transformed cinema.

This is exactly what I expected to hear. Just like Jurassic Park was, this to will be looked back on as a watershed moment in cinematic history.

Also, Saving Private Ryan's violence was much more emotional and it was on the battlefield whereas the violence in Basterds was a bit more sadistic in its nature. Lots of torture, cruel & unusual punishment.

You should go read the reviews again. That's not really what they're saying.

Having said that, no, it likely won't win Best Pic. In a field of 10 nominees, with continuous raves, it'll be nominated. A field of 10 gives you a better chance to be nominated, but a worse chance to actually win, so that'll make it even tougher for Avatar to beat the odds.

Your point?

And what are they saying about the story if they're not saying that its weak/meh/average or below average?

polyh3dron said:

What?

Academy members do not have a problem with graphic violence. Otherwise films like No Country for Old Men, The Departed, Gladiator, Braveheart, Schindler's List, Silence of the Lambs, and Platoon would never have won Best Picture.

I really don't think Inglorious Basterds has a better shot then Avatar... yes you can say Sci-Fi never win... but from the reviews this is kind of a completely new film... not your traditional Sci-Fi.
