ehh..I guess I just dont hate as many things as you do. The original Star Wars Trilogy is the reason I am in to Sci-Fi in the first place. It was my first introduction, and Ive seen all the films 100 times, and still enjoy them just as much as I did when I was a kid. a fan of Sci-Fi not liking Star Wars (or Star Trek) is like a fat person not liking pizza (or chicken wings)..it's possible, but it just doesnt make a lot of sense.
Well, it was different for me. When I first saw Star Wars, and I wish i could introduce you to some of the people around me so I'd be able to independently confirm this with you doubters, I actually was put off by the sci fi genre for a while. I didn't even want to watch other sci-fi movies because after my experience with it and Star Trek, I was really pretty much felt "if this is what people consider the best, then it's clearly not a genre for me."
But being that narrowminded never gets you anywhere, especially when you love movies like I do. And so yeah, I tried other things. And slowly, I begun to build up a list of sci-fi movies I really love. And depending on how loose you are with the term "sci-fi", some of my all-time favorite movies are sci-fi.
But then I saw 2001. I saw 2001 after Star Wars (I know), and I was completely entranced. What a movie! Gorgeous, scintillating, thought-provoking and it had a world I was instantly captivated by. Now this was sci-fi, I thought! Then i saw Aliens, and I saw Back to the Future, and I saw a plethora of other sci-fi that made me believe that no... you don't have to like Star Wars to be interested in the genre. You don't have to settle for "cheesy" when you can get a Gattaca.

Avatar is a mass Sci-Fi spectacle..just like ALL of his films. So, I dont see why this wouldnt interest someone into Sci-Fi or cinema in general . Even when I was doubting it, I still wanted to see Avatar, mainly because it's the next big Sci-Fi event flick...the positive reviews are icing..and my pessimism has melted.
Right, and, wouldn't you know it... I have my tickets purchased to see a RealD version of AVATAR at the Cinemark in Moosic on opening day
This is the theme here. Nobody sees gray. They always see black and white. Admittedly I am guilty of this at times too, but mostly it's hyperbole-for-effect. You guys are serious about this stuff. You think it's not possible to not be hyped, or have issues with something. You have to LOVE it
or else.
I want to see AVATAR, i'm just not hyped for it like I typically am for a James Cameron movie. I have reservations. I'm not in love with a lot of what I've heard, it's problematic. But that does not mean I am not interested in seeing it and forming my OWN opinion.
