ROTF is visual spectacle and LITERALLY nothing else. Still made bank. I'm sure a movie with a little story behind the best visual spectacle in years will do fine

That was Transformers 1. TF2 was just absolutely heinous.

Bayformer fan here. :D They are two very different propositions i knew what i was getting with TF2 a dumb,loud, Michaell Bay film and that's what i got.

With Avatar things seem a bit more thoughtful characters are... and not going into spoiler territory are given time to breathe and get used to their surroundings.

All this moaning over a 'cliche' story is just nitpicking,most films are cliche as hell but as i've said before in this thread as long as the characters and situations are interesting and engaging that doesn't matter.

2. Most stories in movies aren't fresh, so how is this movie any different in that respect?

No, I read the first quarter of the scriptment MORE THAN 4 YEARS ago. I read up until Jake became his AVATAR and thats it. The thing didn't even remotely resemble a proper treatment.

Was talkng to someone this weekend about this..he thought that Avatar was the name of "the tribe of blue indians". The Avatar tribe :lol

some people just don't pay attention to commercials.

You need to see it a third time for me. I haven't been able to get confirmation on a baby sitter and may not even get to see it this weekend.
 
I had a dream last night that I went to see AVATAR, but got too drunk and blacked out and didn't remember any of it. :lol
 
What I really love about Cameron's mech/tech designs are that they are built around a "functional" foundation, where one could see them as machines that could exist and function in the real world.

Most other mechs, especially japanese, are not this way and just are built based on what looks good. I actually think designing a machine that is functional is much more difficult than designing one that just looks pretty.
 
I am one of the few that will probably have to wait until after Xmas to see it, as this weekend and the next are booked solid with responsibilities.

Just a heads up.

RT has updated with one more review (42/46 now) from Time magazine. The review is interesting because it's from someone who somewhat famously trashed Titanic. He talks about that review, and how Avatar is superior to Titanic in his view; it's a very positive review overall.

But he decided to describe the very last shot in the movie in the opening sentence of the review. It's not a huge spoiler. But it's not something I did not appreciated, to put it lightly.

Happened to me at the midnight showing of Watchmen.
I had to go back 2 days later and see it for realsies.

The Richard Corliss one? That was a nicely-written review.
 
The Dream was surprisingly detailed.
I remember getting up to go to the bathroom and slipping on the tile floor. And then like all of a sudden I was wearing sweatpants and no shoes.
And I kept kicking the person the seat in front of me.

The actual "footage" of AVATAR was really weird too, there were like 4 or 5 screens all next to eachother playing the exact same thing.


I'm kind of depressed I dreamt about AVATAR now.

What's worse? That you dreamed about Avatar or that you described the dream in totality to GAF?

This entire thread makes me uncomfortable. I occasionally come in to see if there are any interesting developments (e.g. Armond White review), but just find the most trivial musings. :(

The robots of this movie were designed just to look pretty though. They look small and detailed enough to have a vaguely "real" look, but that's it, there was no worry at all about their actual functionality.

The whole cockpit, basically exposed, is an incridebly design oversight and most of the details are just there to make the machines look...detailed. Many don't seem to have any kind of function.

I had a dream I couldn't buy advance tickets for LotR: The Two Towers and missed seeing the movie on opening day. I shit you not, I woke up in a panic. If there was any doubt I was the worlds biggest nerd, it was erased at that moment.

I think all of Cameron's machines have lots of character and look cool, but also have a slightly "ugly" side to them. He doesn't do aesthetically beautiful designs whether they are practical or not.

It fits well in his fascination with machines, but also his disdain in them, as evidenced in his films.
 
It's kinda hard to believe I'm going to see it tomorrow. The wait for this film has been something of a constant over the past few years. And I love how easy it is to convince people to go watch it. Any sign of hesitation and you casually mention that it's from the maker of "Terminator 2" or "Titanic" - or, if in truly dire straights, drop both.
