Karma Kramer said:Your hype should die down a lot by then and theaters shouldn't be too crowded which is nice. I kind of wish I had the patience to hold off from going opening weekend, but I'll probably end up seeing it twice this weekend. And then I will be seeing it twice again with family over christmas time. And probably another couple of times in January :lol
I basically want to milk this movie for all its worth while I can see it in 3D on a big screen.

Zeilard...I've done you wrong...
Imax has not scheduled another movie into its circuit until the first week of March, in anticipation of a historically long run for "Avatar." Most movies play about three weeks in Imax. If it is as successful as anticipated, "Avatar" is expected to play for about ten weeks. That would break the record for an Imax run set last year by "Dark Knight," which ran for 10 weeks.
Domestic movie theaters are expected to commit to an eight-week initial run for "Avatar," but ultimately that will depend on its performance. If it is disappointing, that could be cut short, and if it becomes as popular as "Titanic" was in its time, it could play even longer. Snyder would not comment on the terms being asked, but Fox is understood to be seeking "premium" terms from exhibitors for what is one of the most highly anticipated movies in years.
THIS!Solo said:This is what I desperately miss about the pre-internet days. You would go see a movie, and that would be it. You would either hate it or be blown away. Nowadays, there are spoilers, script leaks, screeners, set reports, far too many fucking trailers and commercials, etc. I often feel like Ive seen a movie before I actually do. Even worse, I often feel like I know how good/bad the movie should be before I see it. That shit is fucked up.

It is the archetype of the big blockbuster action movie genre.
Big, dumb, bright, colourful and absolutely sucks you in.
Kudos to you James Cameron. Master film maker.
You know the film is absolute class when it can make you literally, sit on the edge of your seat with your heart pounding with concern and trepidation at the interests of, in all other contexts, ludicrous fictional creations.
I still hate the designs on some level... but after watching them, I can understand how the designs are slaves to the emotion and the experience been told; large beautiful expressive eyes, lithe limbs... they draw you in. They look dumb as hell in the promos, but 10 minutes of it, and you forget (as much as you can do anyway) that they're 10 foot tall aliens with silly furry and anthropomorphic qualities. Then the exaggerations do their work and serve to heighten the sense of emotion and feeling felt by the viewer.
Even the robot mechs which are goofy as hell are in a similar way slaves to the movie making, to the emotional experience. Pilots in large see through cockpits giving the robots a highly visceral, extension of self quality, while using a form completely alien to both humans and Navi; Causing us to be distanced more from the marines despite their human forms.
It's an amazing film... it achieves many difficult tasks. Remarkably, it gets viewers to disassociate from our physical forms of our human shells and associate with the spirit underlying our humanity.
Personally... I think this movie will have long legs. Possibly Titanic long. It's a spectacle. It's rewatchable. It's a social experience.

Nope, the deal is 10 weeks. If it does better it will stay longer.
3,457 theatres showing the movie, 2,032 will be running it in 3D, including more than 190 IMAX theaters. Also unsurprisingly, almost 90% of all ticket sales at some major movie ticket sites are for 3D screenings.
Anastacio said:I haven't seen anyone giving an in-depth or detailed description of the 3D compared to other movies yet. What is it like? Is it just like Monsters vs Aliens where the ball flies out of the screen? do you sense any frame/border? does things fly in from behind/the sides?

If this is the New Hope of Avatar's run, does Avatar 2 have the potential to be the Empire Strikes Back of the series? Now that the world is fleshed out, does it have the potential to pick up a thicker plot in the sequel and totally blow us away?
rhino4evr said:This can only mean good things regarding not only the box office, but the revenues, as the tickets for 3D showings are on average 2 or 3 dollars more then a 2D ticket.

Zaptruder said:It is the archetype of the big blockbuster action movie genre.
Bigger screen, better sound, slightly worse 3D effect.ymmv said:Just wondering: I've seen Avatar in 3D and loved it. I'm thinking about buying tickets for an Imax 3D showing. How big is the difference between regular 3D and Imax 3D?
Not revolutionary, but with the amount of 3D compositing sure miles ahead of what has been done before.Zaptruder said:It's not necessarily more revolutionarily 3D than other 3D movies... but it's like watching a movie with 5.1 surround (with 2D been a 2.1 system). It's just nicer!
Little more than this decade's "The Phantom Menace," both in terms of the intense expectations that it has generated and the shockingly banal ways in which it fails to live up to them.

Zaptruder said:Actually, something I forgot to say about the 3D is...
They need higher frame rates. Unfortunately, panning shots in 3D seem even jerkier than in 2D when they're a few different fields of depth.
I recall Cameron himself making such a complaint from an interview a while back; the next revolution will be increasing the frame rate on movies! 30, 50, 60... he wants buttery smooth movies.
Cameron wants 48fps. I agree actually, there's more judder in 3D, but there is less motion artifacting, so win some lose some.Zaptruder said:Actually, something I forgot to say about the 3D is...

..the final chaotic battle scene is put together so beautifully that hacks like Michael Bay and McG should be forced to watch it over and over to learn how to properly put together a large-scale action sequence without it devolving into an over-edited mess of incoherent footage.
