Saw the 3:45 showing, it was fully packed. There was semi-applause in the end of the movie and then everyone decided to leave as quickly as possible.

Maybe.

Did you at least appreciate that the action was well-shot? Everything else aside, I think that the action scenes in this movie are some of the best of the decade. Cameron is still the king of that, for me.

Theater report: how full was yours?

My RealD theater was about 2/3rds full for a 5:55 showing. Thought for sure it'd be packed.
At 11:30 AM this morning my IMAX was completely fucking packed. I'm glad I went alone since there were no 2+ seats together anyway when I got there at 11:10.

I don't know, it seems like Cameron was going for everyone.

The kids, geeks, macho dudes, girls, old people, kids...

Basically Star Wars for the 21st Century.

Quaritch, although incredibly stupid and played out, was a fun villain, the same goes for a few of the other characters.
Quaritch was awesome. I wish he actually had more screentime. It's too bad he didn't get to have his own
Avatar body somehow, that would have been an epic fight too. Hell, he should have had his own Avatar body PLUS a specially designed Mech for it too.
But that'd have been overkill. :lol

I'm not sure, as the Queen is still alive, and still he would only be leader of that particular tribe, not all of them.
I first thought he Jake was referring to
not being the leader anymore when he gave up the Leonopteryx
. But I can't be sure now.

My 11am RealD showing was about ~75% full, more than I thought there'd be that early.

Hopefully the movie does well so that a sequel gets greenlit. Now that the tech is done and in place there is no reason why Cameron shouldnt be able to Empire Strikes Back the fuck out of the series.

First things first. I want a sequel, but I want Battle Angel before he does anything else.

I want R rated Cameron back with cyborgs using this tech.

Also, DY_nasty is seriously just looking for flaws based on his inability to perceive what pretty much everybody could see without Cameron spelling it out (like we needed more spelling out).

He was fucking nuts

I love how he
Ran outside without putting a mask on, held his breath and started shooting the copter
I mean holy shit :lol

oh man, if this movie was nothing but robots and marines, i'd be all over it. but even if we discount the fact that the natives were completely uninteresting visually, the story. . . good god. i just. . . yeah. there is trite and cliche, and then there is this. it's like an amalgam of every cliche from every genre from which it draws. it does absolutely nothing new. even the action scenes, which you noted as enjoying, were chock full of completely stupid dramatic slow motion shots that just didn't work at all. that's to say nothing of the numerous plot holes, the unneeded monologue, and so on and so on. and, there were 180 minutes of all this. wonderful!

pandora looked great though. very impressed with how real the flora looked. the fauna, eh, not so much.

Didn't he say recently that he might not even do that at this point? I thought The Dive was probably his next project.

Well, beyond overkill, it would not have been in line with the character's ethnocentrism and xenophobia. Recall his disgust at
Jake's desire to complete his Navi manhood ritual.

I love it, this is classic Cameron with a straight forward Pocahontas story.

It's not as good as Aliens and T2 but better than all the rest. And I like that its a true action movie at heart. Not alot of "messaging".

My favorite scenes of the movie are probably the "climbing" part, also the
Star Destroyer
looking thing.

My favorite moment with him was easily this

Sippin his coffee as he was ordering his forces to destroy the tree. Felt like what made Duvall awesome in Apocolyse Now.

They made him a real bad ass mother fucker

Yeah. He said he doesn't want to do another 4 year movie right now so The Dive is looking likely for him. :(

Yeah, that was pretty badass, and then he
kind of looks at the guy who gives him the mask like "huh?... Oh yeah" like he doesn't even care at all. And especially also at the end when he pulls out Jake's big knife and uses it himself.

I wonder how they'll be able to top that.

As for where the film stands, Cameron seemed to indicate that "Alita" is still on his radar — though he hasn't progressed to the point of casting the film thus far.

"We're not that far down the line," he said. "We have a very good script and we've done a lot of production design. We've done about a year of production design and we've put together an art reel that shows the arc of the film."

"It's pretty much just add water and we're ready to go," he laughed.
:D

What plot holes? That's one aspect that I thought Cameron had pretty much covered.

I'm sorry, but Cameron's whole portrayal of "The greedy sky people are here for X and they'll do anything to get it" just wasn't what I was expecting. You can't watch the Abyss or Terminator then expect this to be anything close. It was dumb. Really dumb, and not even polished off dumbness - just raw, straight from the soil dumb. 3 hours and unfinished characters combined with pointless events.

maybe this doesn't qualify as a definitive "plot hole," but i thought it was downright silly that
jake was made to look like some kind of genius for trying to jump on the big bad dragon thing from above. "oh shit, of course, ABOVE him."
c'mon! nobody else tried that?

i agree with you 100%.

i'm not trying to rain on the film's parade. i was just really offended not only by how completely devoid of any new ideas it was, but by how poorly executed even the cliches were.

Yeah, but look at the Marketsaw audio interview from the other day. Battle Angel had all that work done before he started shooting AVATAR. But right now he has said he's more than likely going to do The Dive.
well he says he'll do movies until he's 80 so unless he takes another 10 year hiatus from big budget hollywood films we should eventually see it.

Snow fucked up my re-watch plans tonight but I'll definitely be seeing it very soon, fully baked. Can't wait to see Pandora and the awesome CG again.

They probably died trying. That or they didn't have the balls or didn't see the need to do it. The significance of the act was explained pretty well in the film.

Is that really your idea of a plothole?

, it doesn’t even faze him! :lol And him
stabbing that Thanator
= so awesomely brutal.

we're on the same page then. those who had a good time watching this movie because it was absolutely gorgeous but disappointed in the fact that the movie itself wasn't even B-.

There's really a considerable level of violence in the movie for being PG-13. I personally wanted to see more Na'Vi on humans melee fighting.
That one guy at the end was totally awesome. I heard ooohs and ahhhs in the audience :P

the idea that he would be the only person to try this, and that he would present coming at the animal from above as some sort of novel concept, is so sublimely retarded that i suppose it does fit right in with the rest of the plot. carry on.

I guess that I just don't understand where you're coming from regarding this feeling incomplete. It feels to me like it's extremely well-conceived and well executed, and I haven't seen a single point made that pokes much of a whole in this for me.

Beelz: Jake does have a way of thinking that no other Na'vi can access. Granted, your point does still stand, but I guess I can just justify it in my mind as one of those things that nobody had really considered. My guess is that this discussion is pointless, though. I thought that it was extremely well-executed in spite of its cliches, and you disagree. That's not really a reconcilable difference.

Jake barely
got the first flier. He got knocked off a cliff and had to choke the little thing out twice before he could get it to a point where he could make the bond. How in the world did he get the big daddy to submit to the queue in mid-air?

Its pretty important because it means that Jake
is the 6th most bad-ass na'vi of all-time. And without that thing, everyone dies.

I will never understand those kinds of movies, outside of Jaws. By those kinds of movies I mean water-based monsters.

"Everyone get out of the water! There's killer Piranhas!"
"Oh ok!"

-everyone gets out of water-
-roll credits-

Nikki Finke is leading the doom and gloom brigade saying that the snow may have a huge negative effect on avatar's weekend numbers.

Don't you understand? The only purpose of the act was to
rise up the tribe and unite all of the na'vi tribes in Pandora. They were fucking depressed and had all but given up at this point. Nobody tried to ride that beast because they didn't give a fuck. Jake remembered the stories he was told about the Toruk Makto(or whatever). It's a symbolic thing.
Is it really that hard to understand or are you being purposely obtuse?

It's a beautiful movie. It made me feel like a kid again, watching a great Disney film, it's really the kind of flick that can be enjoyed by virtually anyone. I wish I could spend more time in that world. It's a modern day epic fairy tale, in short.

That said, this was the first I've ever watched anything in 3D and it was a bit awkward. I need to wear glasses, so I had to use the special 3D glasses on top of my regular ones, and they also dimmed the picture which looked quite vivid without them. Speaking of which, I took the glasses off several times to compare the 3D effect with the 2D image and, not so surprisingly, it looked spectacular either way. In fact, I'm actually considering going to see it again only in 2D this time since 3D is so alien to me, it might have actually taken away some of the enjoyment I got from the movie.

It's precisely his more aggressive nature that makes it make sense to me that Jake was able to tame the Last Shadow once he was on it. He wouldn't have been reluctant to hit/choke/whatever the shit out of that thing because he comes from a different point of reference than the rest of the Na'vi.

I think you're being purposely obtuse, sir. As traditionally based and spiritual as the Na'vi were, I think its a bit ridiculous to assume that "didn't give a fuck".
