irfan, its time to let it go. NOBODY CARES. :lol
Actually few people did appreciate when I ratted jett and Busty out. I think the lesson is well learned now.

Our only similarity is that we loved TDK and Avatar.

Tip: The January 2010 Cinefex article on Avatar is pretty awesome.

Is it out in stores like Barnes and Noble now?

this movie's colors are going to be amazing on blu ray. I sort of felt it wasnt as bright from the 3d glasses and at times i felt like taking them off to make the movie more vivid.

Man. Somehow, I think watching this in 2D on BluRay is going to be just as amazing - if not more amazing than watching it in 3D in theaters.

I havnt seen it yet, but I've been looking at some of the negative reviews and some of them seem a bit sensational, like the person writing is some fucking purist trying to push an agenda. I'll go to afternoon show, I hate watching movies with families and children.

Finally going to see this tomorrow.

My theater has three different selections for the film, and they're listed as:
-Avatar
-Avatar 3D (in RealD)
-Avatar 3D IMAX Experience

Am I correct in assuming that the first is just the normal 2D version, the second is just 3D on a normal screen, and the third is 3D and IMAX?

Yes, some notes though.

-Definitely see this in 3D.

-Check if thats a IMAX or a "LieMAX."

-There is a some debate as to whether RealD, LieMAX, or true IMAX is the best version.

I guess see it in IMAX/LieMAX if you can. I've just seen it in RealD (which was awesome).

It's a LieMAX but I don't care about that. I've already seen a few movies on that screen and they still look pretty damn good.

So basically, go with the third option? The most expensive one? :lol

Yeah

Liemax Has the large 1.78 aspect ratio, and the 3D clarity is on par with Real-D. So you get best of both worlds.

How is this movie doing so well? The only reason I knew about it and saw it was because of GAF, but most of my family would not have known about it if not for me. There's not really an advertising blitz from what I've seen (however, I don't watch much TV) so it leaves me kind of confused. Anyone have an answer to this question, or am I simply just wrong about there being not much advertising?
Because it's awesome, despite looking absolutely ridiculous in trailers. People like being pleasantly surprised, I guess?

ah.

I've seen it in IMAX 3D. Motion suffered a bit, but the smoother shots were outstanding.

I'm probably going to see it in Real 3D next.
The Thanator chase was a blurry mess in 3D IMAX, but looked clear as day in Liemax and RealD

I think that was heavily altered, I don't remember a single part of the movie looking like that.

Man I've actually grown to love the soundtrack. Especially the main theme, used all over the movie but especially in "Become one of the People".

I need to see this movie again.
You know I actually wrote-off the music as a disappointment, but your right, I've been listening the the soundtrack on youtube, and it's great, Horner's never done anything bad.

I remember some scenes where it looked like that pic. Particulary near the last part of the movies... she seemed to get prettier and more detailed and colorful as the movie went on for some reason.

thats what im saying, we were effectively watching the movie with sunglasses on

edit: at least for me thats what it felt like

I think it more has to do with seeing things in motion, so things blur naturally, therefore you don't really capture that kind of detail. Also definitely has to do with sunglasses...

HAS ANYONE SEEN IT IN 2D?

I suppose I'm in the minority for thinking that Avatar was "okay"?

It was pretty, yeah, but the story wasn't exactly earth-shattering. The characters were pretty generic, too...is this one of those cases where technical ability is far more important than the story, plot, or characters?

Just came back from watching it at L.A. Live Regal Cinema. I thought the movie was OK, not something I'd watch again in the theater. Movie seemed too long and I couldn't stop thinking about the similarities to Dances with Wolves.
Me too:lol But I loooved it! Fuck Monday I'm goin tomorrow!!

Characters were well fleshed out, except for Michelle Rodrigeuz's character. I thought a lot of emphasis was spent on making sure you care about the characters before the final battle scenes. The plot is cliche, but I would take a well done film with a plot I've seen before than the opposite. The story wasn't earth shattering agreed, but didn't everyone know that from the trailer already?

You certainly aren't alone, there has been a number of people who were a great deal more negative in this thread.

The story is predictable, and fairly unoriginal in terms of the great arc, but the minute details are well polished, as is typical with Cameron. The script is a little rough, again, not out of sorts for his work.

I guess the biggest disappointment for me was it has basically the exact same 'message' as his last film, which is that the financial value of something is insignificant when it comes to the value of the experiences. In the case of Titanic it's a $20m necklace versus Rose's experience of the ship, in this it's $20m a kilo mineral versus the 'connection' of Pandora's flora and fauna.

For a man who makes so few films, I was hoping he'd be delivering a new moral message. Maybe next time.

Great technological marvels for their time is no match for love.

Same message in a lot of Cameron movies. Strange, since he loves his tech toys.

Cameron is very consistent with his themes. Though this is the first where I can't find an overt anti-nuclear message.

Man, you should check out Terminator 2, that film is awesome.

This is a tough question. LieMAX is better image quality, but I really loved the scope version you get with RealD. I'd actually say RealD.

The other James Cameron movies I've seen also use the old trope of an evil corporation (WY in Aliens, Cyberdine in T2 and whateverthefuck it is in Avatar)

I mean c'mon...its 2009, Cameron is really good, but using a bad corp. is just lazy

Bullshot?

If I had to guess, it looks like the tree of memories scene.
I'm pretty sure that's when Neytiri says "you have a strong heart." That, or soon after when Jake gets surrounded by those flake things.

And I remember the shot looking pretty much like that, except dimmer (obviously).

It is the 'strong heart' shot. Actually the 'why save you?' shot I believe.

It was more implied in that one, true. The ship itself is a metaphor for our faith in technological advancement; as with all Cameron's movies it's about the work of our own hands destroying us (and love overcoming it, of course).

Cameron has said he sees the Titanic as a nuclear metaphor.

OK, so who would you have had instead as the villian in the film?

Serious question.

The only downside to the Villains is the lack of conflict within them. I mean, of course youre not going to expect morally indecesive characters from what is essentially a Blackwater analogue, but you would expect something like that from the higher ups in the RDA.

Worst part is that there definitely is self conflict in the Selfridge character, but most of it was cut out of the movie. So hopefully that gets put back in in an Extended cut.

Wow. That totally went over my head.
