Rottenwatch: AVATAR (82%)

The only measure I've seen as an indication of appeal is the Cinemascore exit surveys. Titanic scored an A+ across all demographics. Avatar scored an average of an A, with a mix of A and A+ across all demographics.

And given what's going on at the global box office, I think we have a good indication that Avatar is breaking out into wide demographic appeal.

Either way, they'd have done modeling like that; the point being, that isn't just concept art. It's an early render of Quaritch, which was later used in the film.

(The shots were medium distance.)

That particular image IS!

And like you said, medium shots.. so CG dummies essentially.

BTW! Did you know Batman Begins has CG Bale in it?

Yeah, I don't see how people can write off the possibility so easily, but it seems like they are the same people that thought Avatar wouldn't succeed period. Titanic only made around 30 mil each weekend, what do you think ppl were saying back then? With the Bluray rls rumored for April that would be a huge factor in cutting off its returns though.
I''m definitely not one that thought that. I knew it would do good. I am surprised by the 2.6% drop. I was thinking it would drop 20 points more. I'm really glad though, Cameron is the fucking man, and I want him to succeed! But Titanic had like a 25% increase, and a 40
% increase in it's 20th week or something. I was a freak phenomenon!

quaritch is cg at least 2 times from what I can tell in the final battle

Yes. Also, when he's saying " YOUR REAL LEGS!" and shadow boxes with the AMP suit on.

I'm not even sure what we're arguing about. Someone posted a CG Quaritch render, and you said, "not confirmed, concept art". I said he was CG in some shots, and you agreed. Well, that was my entire point. What shots and at what distance is not something I was arguing (or have an interest in).

the part when he's about to
shoot the link trailer

and when he's wrestling with
Jake before he nearly stabs him in the shoulder

That is pretty amazing I never felt any disconnect during those scenes.

That's not right, I've seen behind the scenes footage of Stephen Lang shadowboxing while inside the AMP suit. :P

It felt more to me that most times the humans looked very CG to the point where them being there in the flesh was the exeption. It's almost the opposite of how people generally look at effects. It was "Ah ha! There's the obvious flesh double!" instead of "Ah ha! There's the obvious CG double!"

Hey now. wait.. lemme look the scene up on youtube. I swear he's CG
EDIT:
holy shit. at what this film is doing to us. We don't even know what's CG from what's real :lol

Whoa, that pic was definitely not in the movie. Post battle epilogue?

Wonder who he is holding.
Tsu'tey?
:(
This really makes me think that they have a bunch of finalized stuff that they didn't use in the theatrical release. I'm betting they'll include all of it in an extended physical release. I hope so, anyway. I want as much of this film possible.

He ain't CG there :lol

They wouldn't use CG like that. It would have been him in a rig, exactly like how they did it in Matrix. CG humans in this case, would only be used for digital doubles. It doesn't make sense otherwise.

I think it's totally possible. Titanic took 10 months to hit 1.8 billion. Avatar's hit 1/3 of that in just 10 days.

Things are different now. Look at Dark Knight which took 1/4 of the domestic total in just one weekend. It's probably not going to happen.

Was lucky enough to see this in glorious 3D in theaters today. This is my first 3D film and it didn't disappoint. Pandora looked absolutely incredible and I doubt any other films match its beauty anytime soon.

I don't know if 3D is the future of film. I think it's a must for future top tier action films but I can't see how it'd be necessary in films with little action.

In terms of where Avatar is as a film for me...not that high. It's a fun movie that's a MUST see in a theater but beyond that I can't imagine rushing to my local redbox to pick it up on release. It's very much a 3D theater experience. Avatar kind of feels like it's being stretched too thin. On one hand the movie is long enough as it is but on the other hand I feel more focus on other parts would have made it better. We don't have enough information on humanity. What type of world does Jake really come from? What are humanities real capabilties from a military perspective? Is there
any chance that the military could simply send in reinforcements?

I felt like the movie might have been a lot better if Jakes human side had much more character. Cameron makes things far too easy for Jake and as a result he misses a lot of opportunities to take his film to the next level. For instance we never know
much about Jakes human side. He's ex military but what other family might he be leaving at home? What type of Earth or home is he really leaving? Does he have any loved ones behind?

As I said Cameron makes it far too easy for Jake to make every massive choice with ease. He's given absolutely no reason to believe that he can ever truly be a Navi and yet he's giving up his legs and his future by helping them. He knows he can't stay linked up forever. Everything from helping the Navi, to choosing to become one forever, to betraying his own people are as clear as day to Jake and Cameron fails hard for not making these choices much harder for Jake overall.

Either way I'm excited about the future of 3D and CG and applaud Camerons efforts here. It's a damn good movie but doesn't hit as high as it would like to.

You need to look at the situations a little more carefully than that; run the numbers.

Avatar is at over 60% of Dark Knight's total WW take in only 10 days, and hasn't dropped yet.

Just got in from my third and final theatrical viewing of Avatar. Its not that I couldnt or wouldnt see it more times, but rather that it just feels like the perfect time to get off. Each vewing has been even better than the last, and I dont want to ruin that by oversaturating myself. Avatar. Is. The. Best. Theatrical. Experience. Ever.

Ill next be watching it on Bluray, whenever that is.

$212M domestic and $616M WW in 10 fucking days? Good lawd! :lol :lol :lol

I way overestimated the drop for this weekend (I said 30%, we got 3%). I wont make that mistake again :lol Next weekend: 15% drop.

You say that, just like I had said it. But wait till a month or so 6 weeks from now, when you realise that soon you won't be able to watch it like that ever again.

I reckon you will have one more viewing in you.

Oh also, that CGI model rendering of Quaritch is from ages ago and what they used to make the model bust for SideShowCollectables or whatever its called.

If so, and you may be right, Im not going to do it for at least 3 weeks until I have gotten some distance from it.

That's what I had planned too. Then on Xmas day my mum asked me very sweetly if I wouldn't mind seeing it again so soon. Of course I went for my 4th time.

Will try to wait at least 3 - 4 weeks till my next viewing.

Also Solo, did you pay attention to the music when Jake is briefing the others about the Home Tree this time?

Watched it again, but I this time with Xpand glasses.
Way better than Master Image technologgy, literally zero ghosting.

+1.

And forking over for a 3D TV.
I only think a 3DTV would be worth it if were autostereoscopic. If I have to wear glasses to enable the 3D function in my own home, then I don't think it's worth it at all. I will, however, be getting a 3D enabled monitor for games and stuff. It'll be significantly cheaper than a 3DTV.

When I get a 3DTV, it'll be something among these lines: http://www.wired.com/gadgetlab/2008/10/philips-3d-hdtv/ -- I just think it would be best to let the technology mature.

Tried to see it this afternoon, it was all sold out. I'm going to an 11:30 showing tonight (won't be home until 2:30, ugh)...but holy shit, I have never seen my theater that packed before. It was comparable to the midnight showings of Star Wars or Spider-Man 3 or TDK that I saw. The line was so damn long, for a second I thought I was at Six Flags :lol

Quad HD autostereo better be the end all be all of HDTVs

I don't wanna hear anything about an Octo HD virtual reality TV the year after I upgrade
Nah, QuadHD is all you're getting for a long time. 35mm film 4k transfers are basically QuadHD, so you essentially have all the cinema from day one to now being around QuadHD max. They used to use larger film, 70mm (65mm negatives) however, the vast majority is 35mm.
