This movie was so damn generic. I remember when it was called Dances with Wolves and then at least I could connect with the title character. I sympathized with his feelings and experiences. I felt no connection to any character in this movie other than the Doctor that was supposed to be the main dude. Him being all pissy was the only real emotion I felt in the whole movie. Giovanni Ribisi's character that we just have to hate was so typical that I am surprised they didn't get Paul Giamatti to do it (the easiest portrayals to hate are Giamatti's)

James Cameron is such a popcorn flick maker. This film held nothing of substance other than a passive slight at the US for being in Iraq and Afghanistan. The fact that this movie will end up doing 5x as much gross as District 9 is atrocious. That was a movie that wasn't paint by the numbers and you felt real emotion with the bumbling character. Even though much of it was SFX like Avatar, the humanistic side of the Aliens actually produces empathy in the viewer.

The Hurt Locker only did $16 million worldwide :(

Saw this tonight and absolutely loved it. Yes, maybe it's a tad generic, but the effects were amazing, and after the development of the native's character I really was effected (ugh, i forget which I'm supposed to use there, e or a) by their plight by the end.

I will concede that the ending was a bit of a copout, but overall I really enjoyed it.

The crowds? The anticipation? Couldn't be the acting, for there was none to speak of. Couldn't be the story, unless you haven't seen several modern and classic films. Couldn't be the film score because it was pretty blah for a film of this magnitude. Special effects? gotcha. Years of build up?

I can think of nothing else. I am just severely let down again by Popcorn-GAF. I just can't hardly trust GAF Reviews anymore. Everything is one extreme or the other. Either someone is reviewing Animal Collective and calling it the best "music" ever or someone is hyping up (seriously, not in a jesting manner) Britney Spears' latest release. Either all the people on GAF with ironic moustaches and thick rimmed glasses (non-corrective lenses) are hyping up the latest indie flick or they are hyping up this dreck. The one thing that impressed me more than anything in this whole movie was actually the way they made Sam Worthington's legs look all debilitated and thin. Thank you, modern computer graphics. :)

and that moaning/dancing sequence and na'vi sex sequence was easily as disturbing and embarassing to be watching as the Matrix Reloaded (Revolutions?) cave rave scene. Yep, that bad.
 
I just watched the movie in RealD and...holy shit, so good! The movie was really long.

Did any of you wondered how awesome it would be to fuck some of those blue chicks?
 
But those criticisms are valid for any other film except the type of film that Avatar is.
Avatar is gorgeous, it really is an accomplishment. The simple story with substance, is a return to the early 90's and 80's formula of story telling.

If we want deep stories, with multilayered characters. Well, we have books for that now, don't we?


I hope this doesn't change our relationship.

i thought the acting was fine. for me this film was about being transported to another world, and it did that better than anything i've seen - i also thought it was a good-natured film, a great escape from daily life. i guess i didn't know what to expect going in, and as i saw it a week before release i didn't read people on GAF going apeshit over it beforehand. i try not to read reviews before i see something. i've seen it three times, and i still want to see it again - i guess it either clicks with you or doesn't.

I would check 4chan, but it kind of scares me.

Most of my earlier questions were addressed but I remembered I had another: What's the relationship between sleeping in one body and being awake in the other? When Jake first gets his avatar, it seems like he's automatically pulled out of it when his avatar goes to sleep (first night in the treetops), but then he stays awake in human form to do stuff. I got the impression that for most of the training period, Jake would spend half his day in the avatar and the other half as a human, but when would that leave time for sleep?

I think he is sleeping when he is hooked up as avatar.. controls in his REM sleep?

Right, that's what I thought it might be. But wouldn't that be really unhealthy and exhausting for a soldier? Even if the body gets rest, I think having your mind be awake 24 hours a day for so long might present some long-term psychological effects.

I'm 19 and I've never seen a movie in 3D -_-

It's an experience I'd definitely like to have with Avatar, but for me it's not worth a 100 mile drive. The world of Pandora captivated me in 2D, so that element wasn't missing for me, even if it would be enhanced by 3D.

Hence the fact
that he stopped shaving, taking showers, even leaving Grace having to force him to eat at one point. The avatars aren't designed to be used so intensively, not because they breakdown, but because the human being's mind can't handle it psychologically speaking.
Which is another reason why
He transfers himself permanently into his avatar at the end
 
saw it this afternoon... it was visually very fun especially in the last hour or so

good film made great by newness of experience... can be bested in future without any doubt in my mind but was worth experience of watching in 3d

i cant wait for more 3d fantasy/sci fi movies being made... i grew up in the eighties with a few 3d movies and i love this shit lol

He sleeps while in human form (at least some). There is a seen where he falls asleep doing his video log and Grace helps him to his rack.

There's isn't really any nudity in it, Grace is the only human you see naked, and then it's a digital human (right?) not showing any nipple. Alien nipples shouldn't count.

As for Battle Angel, if it's his next project, and if he really does intend to push 48/72fps next time, it'll be PG-13/12A again. Any time he wants to take a big risk and piss of every theatre on earth, he's going to have to compromise the film.

So I watched this last night. I haven't been following the hype much and only really knew just a few things about it before going in, like the budget, 1st trailer, and a little bit of GAF. Not seen a 3D movie before either. I am aware of all the massive geek hype though.

So I left there wondering exactly what is so 'game changing' about it. It's obviously not the story. The graphics were fuck awesome as well as the animations of the Navi and so on. The 3D-ness of the film was good but the glasses took some of the colours away and objects that were very close to the screen, were slightly double-visioned (I wear glasses normally but I have contacts in - could this have made the image off?)

Now, I watched it in 3D and I thought that was the intention of JC, but I'm being told that I should have gone for the IMAX version. Fuck that though being £20 per ticket.

So have I watched the movie it was meant to be watched? Or have I just watched a 3D version of the movie? I really wanted to be blown away, but I feel that I just watched a pretty good CGI film in 3D.

both are action movies with a paper thin plot predictable from miles, weak characters and special effects turned to 11 (more like 12 in avatars case)

I have the feeling, that the same people who criticize the story for Avatar would criticize something like Terminator 2 for being too similar to T1.

Saw it last night in IMAX, holy fuck...never seen a 3D movie before and am expecting to be disappointed in I see another any time in the near future. The effects in that were amazing
 
Quatrich is a little one dimensional. I appreciate the performance more since reading the scriptment, this idea he is the most beautiful place imaginable, but his prolonged exposure to war, he is incapable of enjoying the beauty and can only really see negatives. But in the film he's just this cockhole warmonger.
 
I'd have Quaritch find a way to connect to Ewya and he sees and feels the cries and pain of all of those he killed. Resulting in him crying manly tears, subsequently putting a bullet in his head.

Same Here.

IMAX + 3D + Avatar = Fucking Incredible!

After the first 10-15 minutes I forgot the movie was even in 3D and just became totally emersed in the film. The 3D was subtle enough to not be annoying, but still made the effects really pop.

Great movie!

Sorry bro I can't get behind this at all. Paper thin plot and knowing where the plot is taking you are two completely different things. Everything in Transformers is a side-note to doing what bay wanted which was create some bad ass big screen versions of our childhood memories. All the characters exist for the simple reason of allowing Bay to show us as much Robot fighting as possible. The effects and leap in technology in Avatar are for a wholly different purpose. They are there to serve the narrative and to make you care about the story.
