Thats really my only problem with the score - there is the I See You motif running throughout the movie which is great, but there isnt a rousing, memorable main theme.
That is pretty much the main theme imo.

I dont think Horner needs be, nor will be, replaced. All he needs to do is find some fucking inspiration.
The thing is though, he spent so much time working on the score for this film, and while it's good, it's not what one would hopefully expect in terms of the time that had been put into it, especially when it comes to finding some inspiration.

Oh well, no point in arguing over it now I suppose. I sincerely doubt Cameron is just gonna ever punt him to the curb, they're way too close and Horner will always be doing the scores for any Cameron film.

I grew to really like the score on my second viewing.

Though Avatar is really missing that big huge theme that blockbusters typically have.

Even TF2 had one -_-.

It does, but it's not really blared out unfortunately.

Hrm. I wasnt aware that he had put in an unusually large amount of time on this score.

EDIT: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cN3SefT4Ny8&feature=related
4:48 of this track is an example of the running motif.

For Titanic, he got a director's fee, a screewriter's fee, and a producers fee in addition to an undisclosed percentage of the gross. I watched the Charlie Rose interview with Cameron last week and he said his final take home was "north" of $100m from Titanic.

I haven't read anything about his earnings this time around, but since it's the same studio, I'm guessing the fee structure was similar.

On that note, Fox learned from last time around. they split international distribution rights with Paramount because they were nervous about making their money back. They did the distribution themselves this time around.

.
Learned their listen indeed!:lol

Ah, so James Horner did the soundtrack. Well that explains why I kept thinking they just copied some of the tracks from Troy and threw it in :lol

And I'm going to see this movie again later today with a couple people who want to see it. I think this is like four days in a row now. Is this real life?
:( Wow no you like it, heh! I think it's he's best sense Braveheart!

Man, too much Zimmer hate in this bitch. I personally think Clint Mansell would have been perfect for Avatar. He seems to be perfect for sci-fi lately, although Avatar is much less serious than The Fountain or Moon, the score would have no doubt been a fucking classic. :P

What are you referring to in particular? BB and TDK are great, but its the James Newton Howard cues that hit the right notes for me moreso than the Zimmer cues (HOWEVER, Zimmer's "Molossus" might be my favorite action cue of the decade, so there you go). And the Pirates sequels have great scores, but Klaus Badelt really built the entire foundation in Pirates 1 and Zimmer just built on that.

Most of Zimmer's new cues for the POTC sequels are better than what Badelt did. :P I find the POTC1 OST to be kinda crap to listen to.

Actually you wouldn't need much of a time skip for a sequel (but you'll probably get it anyway) because there are a number of different ships shuttling back and forth between pandora and earth as well as FTL communication. Of course I'm grabbing all of this from unofficial sources so the validity of it can be questioned.

All the talk about composers, I love this movies soundtrack, and I love Zimmer, his Gladiator ST was magic, but you'll are forgetting the best composer ever!

Maybe it's just fantasy.

Badelt's score is just the theme on repeat haha. It's still good though. Also Mansell.. just doesn't suit the tone of the movie.. But then to try something new perhaps.. I dunno.

Anyway. I'm gonna bet an inch of my hair that this won't pass $300 mill in the US. That's right. Mutilation.

I dont hate Zimmer. Hes talented and a shrewd businessman to boot. Im just saying that people should be informed of some of his "practices" before praising work that may or may not be his.

I think Mansell would have done some truly epic shit for this movie. Oh wells.

I agree. It's just I'm finding it hard to picture it, because Mansell has never done a movie like Avatar. He has done Sci Fi, but they're more.. less actiony.. sorta. I love Mansell, I dunno.

Best thing would be if every composer did the soundtrack for it, and we got to choose!

Yeah. The score really has memorable moments, but they don't pump up enough. For me, THIS is one of the most memorable, but it only lasts about 20 seconds!!!!

What's the diffrence between the Imax screenings and the regular 3d ones?

I just came back from the Imax showing and the only diffrence I noticed was the bigger screen. It wasn't in Imax ratio so the screen wasn't "full" and the audio, while great, didn't blow me away like in The Dark Knight.

Does my theater sucks, or this is how it should be?

(Amazing, wonderful movie BTW)

In the extraordinary case of Avatar grossing 340 mill by the end of the weekend, and with the worldwide/domestic percentage maintaining as it is, it will miss 1 billion by a few dozen millions. :P

Well, I was including Monday in my amendment. But even if you don't, then it's right on track, if the weekend is flat to last. The international figure is through Monday (I think), not Tuesday.

What are the chances it will overtake the Dark Knight's domestic record and what are the chances it will overtake Titanic? To be honest, I think the latter is more likely. Not that I believe it will happen, but hell, it's doing gangbusters around the world and not slowing down. Give it another 4 weeks and we'll see.

This song is so great!
I listened to the ST, all day at work, and the whole soundtrack has little nods to Braveheart, and Titanic, this song included!
Ans this song starting at 2:02 is sooo epic, I kind of agree about the lack of a "main theme", it also needed a neytiri theme!

Those are probably the best complete songs in the soundtrack; and my favourite parts of the movie.

I know exactly what you mean. This (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mw6Se1Wo4S4&feature=related#t=6m57s) is my favorite piece of score of 2009, but it only lasts 30 seconds :lol

Yeah, thats good also. This movie needs a second soundtrack :lol

DONT GET ME STARTED AGAIN! RAAAGGEE! I still cant believe that the ENTIRE song before, and after that 30 seconds is played in the movie.
Maybe theyll use it on an extended scene on the blu-ray :(

But why cut it in the first place? Ive seen the film 3 times so I know exactly what it would accompany, and I would have fit great with Trudy's arrival.

"because fuck you."

Pretty much :lol There were actually TWO very poor decisions, music editing-wise, in the final battle sequence. The aforementioned hacking of "War", and the "Ewya has heard you!" cue.

Being that there are 12 ISV's in routine flights between the 2 planets, the next one would typically be thought to arrive just after the Venture Star is scheduled to depart (about a year since the start of the film). But yeah, there definitely is good communication between the two planets as evidenced when Quaritch told Jake he had gotten his corporate approval to get his legs back (came off sounding like he just got it done), not to mention the removed scene from the film where Selfridge threatens Quaritch with a "phone call".

Man, I really want to see this in 2D now. Been looking at some stills from the movie online and the colors are "wow" in a way that was really missing from the 3D experience.

I'm hoping JC doesn't degrade the colors for the 2D blu-ray

Taking my staff to see this tonight as a thanks for their hard work this holiday (also an excuse for me to see it a 4th time :lol ) so I am contributing $108 to the total today :D

I think it's too late for me to watch it in 2D. By this point in time the prints must be scratched and dirty. :P

Just arrived from seeing Avatar for the 3rd time. I can't believe it still grips me and makes me forget everything else while I'm in Pandora. :D :D :D

Oh btw, something I think I'd never witnessed in a theatre (here in Portugal). At the end there was APPLAUSE. :O:O It's really really unusual to say the least. I guess normally over here men are too manly and women are too womanly... err.. or something... and are afraid to show emotion, but NOT THIS TIME. :lol

And seeing people are just picking composers... Inon Zur anyone?

The last time I was watching it I was actually constantly lifting my glasses to see the difference in color brightness throughout the movie :lol

Funny thing is even without the glasses the colors still look different from what is shown in the online trailers.

Almost forgot, a group of friends went with me and watched it for the 2nd time, 1st time had also been in Xpand3D like me, and they all enjoyed it in RealD much more.

Regarding $700+ mil. -> LOL. My bet of $1B by the weekend still stands strong. :D
