jeez. i just got back from a 10:45 pm showing of Avatar Imax-3d. The theater was pretty much packed. amazing for a wednesday night late showing.

movie was good, not great. Visuals were fucking amazing though.

just saw it as my first ever 3D movie.

great movie, seems to have been solidly executed but I'm still iffy on the format as a whole. there were only a few complete wow moments IMO.
when he's talking to that floating guy after waking out of cryosleep, the raining ash after the hometree was razed + a few more

it seems it's been sold out, every showing every day since release though. random goofy moments aside i can certainly see why.

Saw it for the first time in 3D yesterday.
The trailer did nothing for me and I was initially hoping it would flop.
So I went in very skeptical.

This movie blew me the fuck away. The story is hardly original but well executed and the visuals, my god the visuals. I probably forgot that I was watching a CG movie. The facial animations of the Navi were simply sublime. It took a little while for my eyes to adjust to the 3D, but 15 minutes in it didn't even cross my mind anymore.. I was just in it.
At the end of the film the audience cheered and clapped. Perhaps because I watched it in Amsterdam, and there may have been some international crowd present, but I've never had that happen with a movie, ever.

All in all a mind blowing experience. The sad thing is. I don't care for buying/seeing it on blu-ray. What would be the point. It can't replicate this experience.

Finally got a chance to see Avatar in IMAX today, pretty much every showing for the last week and a half has been sold out. However, the picture didn't fill the entire IMAX screen, and the theater I went to is "true IMAX". Should I complain later today or is that how it's supposed to be (I can't imagine that being so but you never know)? The movie was good, but I couldn't stop thinking about the picture not filling the screen.

somehow it surprises folks when I tell them that I didn't like it as much as everyone else did

don't get me wrong, the cinematography is beautiful, but I can only see the movie itself as a vehicle for non-gimmicky 3D in film, the film itself is pretty bland and predictable, and kind of a mess in places

still worth the price of admission (just to experience it) but not something I'll remember in 10-20 years

I just got back from seeing it for the first time. I showed up a few minutes late and must have missed the Final Fantasy XIII trailer in 3D that is supposedly playing in theaters here in Japan. Oh well.

This was my first full 3D movie and first experience with 3D on the big screen. It took my eyes a few minutes to get used to it, but overall I was very impressed by the way it was used. Some of the scenes completely floored me.

As for the movie, I really enjoyed it. It was a lot better than I had expected it to be. I was honestly a bit skeptical about the movie from previews and hadn't really paid much attention to it. I'm glad I did because I probably enjoyed the movie a little more than I would have if I had really high expectations. This is definitely one of the coolest sci-fi / action movies I have ever seen. 2009 sure was a great year for sci-fi with Star Wars, District 9 and Avatar (I'm sure I'm missing a few more).

The attention to detail was insane and you can really tell a lot of time was spent in crafting the world and its lore. I would love to see this universe be expanded upon as I find it extremely interesting. The story wasn't complicated or anything, but I enjoyed it for what it was and just had a really good time viewing Pandora and its inhabitants. The 3D visuals definitely enhanced the experience and I am really excited for the technology if more movies can use it as effectively as Avatar.

Avatar is definitely one of the year's best all around movie experiences in my opinion and I can't wait to see it again.

I don't get why people act like this. Not liking the trailer so hoping the movie flops? Wow. :lol

All the silly pre-hype around the movie got on my nerves, especially considering the trailer did nothing for me.

What really sucks is that clipped section would be perfect for the "Eywa hears your" cue, instead of the trumpety cliche we got.

Goddamn, that is a rather brilliant idea!

You don't have AMCHD?

Would it matter if he did? HD or not, AMC is one of the worst places you could watch a movie (hell, probably only above Spike). Movies edited to shit, fucked up aspect ratios, commercials, you name it.

I was wondering the same thing, so I did a whois look up and it appears that it is official as it's owned by Fox :P

Isnt that a good thing? FOX owning it means the info is legit. I have never visited the site because I assumed it was just a fan wiki filled with the usual made up fan BS. Now that you're telling me its an official wiki, I will actually go there.

Before I head off to bed... you guys should check out this interview with Stephen Lang (Quaritch). The good stuff is at the bottom :D

http://movieblog.ugo.com/movies/stephen-lang-interview

Some potential Avatar II spoilers so I'll spoiler tag it in case anyone wants to remain like a baby until it's out, but it's really just speculation.

MP: So I know your character doesn't make it in the end, but...

SL: Don't be too sure.

MP: Well that's what I want to know, could we see the rise of Quaritch?

SL: Listen, the rules are different on Pandora. I can't say one way or another, but if you remember I say, "nothing's over as long as I'm breathing." Well my mantra now is, "nothing's over as long as I got DNA."

MP: I like that prospect! Who knows where people go on Pandora.

SL: I think it depends on where Jim wants to take the story. There's a whole universe of stories to be told and he's just scratched the surface.

They are TOTALLY stealing my reverse-Avataring-gets-Quarritch-back-in-the-fold idea :lol

Maybe Quaritch
gets absorbed into the earth and the essence of his evil takes over the planet consciousness and makes the planet turn against the Na'vi

Final battle is a

FFV? :lol

Taking my staff to see this tonight as a thanks for their hard work this holiday (also an excuse for me to see it a 4th time :lol ) so I am contributing $108 to the total today :D

Damn this movie just won't stop with guys like you. Keep it going. :D

Those Quatrich twists would be cringe-worthy. :P

How much do you guys think Avatar will have made by the end of Jan 2010? Domestic and worldwide.

480 million domestic

810 million overseas

1290 million worldwide! aw yeah.

There's nothing that's even remotely threatening its reign as box office king in January. Sorry GARY WHITTA. :P

Dude, come on, how did you NOT giggle at some of the sensual scenes in the film?
Pretty much every emotional scene in this movie was hilariously horrible. However, that sex scene did make me and a bunch of other people laugh, a few guys even walked out.

When Jim woke up and said "What did I do!", the whole theater just lost it and started laughing.

No one laughed in my showing, but I had a father next to me tell his son to cover his eyes (when it looked like we were going to see some Na'vi hot sex). His son says "Why?!" Then the scene is quickly over and his Father says "Never mind".

I thought it was a hilarious exchange.

I'll probably be beaten up by saying this but I hope there's no sequel.

I've seen this happen so many times; someone makes an awesome movie that earns boatloads of money and just because of that, they make a sequel and it turns out just awful.

Transformers 2 wat

Yeah but I just think Avatar's story is a one movie only kind of story.

In order to make a sequel, they're going to have to think of some crazy ideas, which I'm afraid of hating.

Terminator 2 and Aliens, yo.

p.s. Transdongers 1 is just as awful.

I know what you mean, and agree with you.

I'm just worried they'll come up with a somewhat "forced" and ridiculous story just to make more money.

Don't disappoint Cameron

We were waiting for a giant 3d cock to be swung out of the screen.

Cameron knows how to do a good sequel. If T2 and Aliens are anything to base what Avatar 2 will be like, it'll be an actioner like no other movie could ever achieve.

Just wondering, since the DVD/Bluray release is scheduled in mid-2010, does that mean Avatar is going to have the standard 12-18 week cinema run like all movies do nowadays?

Won't that hurt its chances to beat Titanic?

Only in 2D.

That story where he nailed a cellphone to a wall?

Nope. Never heard of it.
Not "a" cell phone. Apparently there was an entire collection around the exit by the end of the shoot. :lol

Though apparently he has mellowed out quite a bit since Titanic.

This was during Avatar? Fuck me...

Need link.
Worthington mentioned it in an interview with Leno, and I heard someone else say it in an interview - I think it was Cameron himself - but I can't find it. Wikipedia has this:

Sam Worthington, the latest lead actor to work with Cameron, stated on the Jay Leno Show that Cameron had very high expectations from everyone, and would often use a nail gun to nail the film crew's cell phones to a wall above an exit door in retaliation to unwanted ringing during production.

Apparently by the end of production there was quite the collection up there.

I wish movie theaters had the same policy.

That sounds like an assholish thing to do, really. And ridiculously awesome as well! It makes me think of this too:

I remember reading that on the set of Titanic, crew had a t-shirt that said, "You don't scare me, I've worked for James Cameron."

One of the stories from the Titanic shoot was a camera operator who kept fucking up a shot - not framing a long pan correctly all the way through. Since it took forever to set each take up (and time was a huge amount of money on that set), and he'd blown it several times in a row, Cameron told him that if he fucked up again, he was fired. He did, and Cameron fired him on the spot.

LOL, after seeing him in limited appearances on entourage I can totally see him acting like that. A most perfectionists act like that anyway, they get frustrated easily when disrupted.

Please God let James Cameron direct Terminator 5 with Christian Bale.

I have been thinking the same thing. I wanna see James Cameron work with Christian Bale AND Russell Crowe. Two actors that are perfectionists and demand a lot from their directors. I bet that team would turn out one hell of a movie.
