The same for me. Simply a gorgeous piece of cinema, and the reason I'm already hankering to go see Avatar again.

#2 in the world after 20 days. Holy...

How many times have you seen the movie?
Thinking of going again this weekend myself

Enough that it's starting to get embarrassing.
four - once with my wife opening night, once with my daughter the following weekend, once to see how Dolby compared to RealD (shit), and then again before my wife and kids got back from visiting family

Though nowhere near as embarrassing at the number of times I saw Titanic in theaters. Left to my own volition, Avatar might rival that run. :lol

I'm going to predict that it's going to have around a -40% drop. So that would put it around $40 Million this weekend domestically.
Based on its Monday gross and its weekday drops so far, a conservative estimate would put it at around $45 million for the weekend. I expect a somewhat a softer drop for Avatar, though, so I'm predicting a bit under $50 million. $40 million, while still record-breaking, would be somewhat disappointing.

"Ghaleon. The reason why Avatar is #2" :D

Yeah I'm expecting the numbers to be a little bit lower this weekend. I'd like for it to hit $50M though.

I've seen it twice. Once in IMAX and once in R3D.

Awesome both times. Enjoyed IMAX more.

Yeah, saw it twice myself. First time in Real3D and second in IMAX. IMAX sound is just outstanding. Immersion that 3D does is awesome in this movie.

One thing though, it's for all 3D movies. Those glasses are like shades, movie is so colorful but the glasses shade all those colors and it bums me out. I can't wait to watch on BD.

That would probably mean almost 200 worldwide... how much has it been making worldwide just in the weekends?

It made over $220 million worldwide last weekend, if I recall correctly, and the daily drops overseas have been extremely soft. I wouldn't be at all surprised to see $160 to $170 million this weekend.

I went yesterday to watch it. It was the second time, and in 3D again. And I have to say I enjoyed the film even more than the first time. I can't believe how is this even possible, but it's just that Avatar is damn awesome. I think I could rewatch it til' end of time. When the movie ends you feel really disconnected to the real world around you, you just wish to come back to Pandora again.

As an anecdote, I live in a small western town in Spain* and the theater was completely packed!. That's not so surprising given that yesterday was a major holiday in Spain though.

There's no IMAX in Spain, is there?

Not where I live but there's one in Madrid (part of my family who live there have watched it in the IMAX theater, they say it's a glorious experience :P). There's another one in Barcelona of course.

Here's a couple of links to their webpages (in Spanish):

http://www.imaxmadrid.com/imax.html

http://www.imaxportvell.com/imax.php

PS: there are more IMAX theaters in Spain than I thought. I was checking the Wikipedia and I learned that there are at least an IMAX theater in Oviedo (northern Spain) and another one in Murcia (southern Spain).

How come there isn't one in Portugal? =\

Bad luck dude. Depending where you live in PT perhaps you could take a train and travel to one of the IMAX theaters in Spain, the nearer the better. That's it, if you're willing enough :).

I hope you have access to any 3D enabled theater. The movie is so much enjoyable in 3D (at least for me) that is no funny.

Because we suck.

We don't suck THAT much. :) (well.. perhaps in the interior... and the south... :s)

So looking at the all-time domestic chart:

Avatar will jump from #14 to #12 with yesterday's haul. And then today's will move it up to #10.

Assuming a $50m weekend to be conservative, it's around #5, give or take a slot. And then it's $100m away from TDK and $170m away from Titanic. TDK will fall probably two weeks after that, and then we'll see if Avatar has a long enough tail to edge past Titanic. I think it will.

"we don't suck that much! well, I guess we do.. except in the north"

Guess we gotta go to Spain, eh?

Hey, obviously someone in my family gave me wrong information because I'm checking the Interweb now and Avatar it's not available in any IMAX theater in Spain. I don't know the reasons. Maybe they confused IMAX with any of those huge Kinepolis 3D theaters (huge by my city standards, you know).

In any case, you're not really any more fucked in this regard than us Spaniards.

There was (and is) a big screen in the Centro Multimeios in Espinho (there's a planetarium there too) and I could swear that some years ago it actually was an IMAX screen. I don't know how this works, but if it's franchised or something, perhaps it was and the owners didn't upgrade the equipment as time went by and lost the right to use the IMAX designation. In their site they even say "with an IMAX-like screen" lol. No 3D though.

That's just balls-out insane. On every level. Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. The top 10 titles (Titanic excluded) are pretty bunched up, to be fair, but jumping from #10 to #5 in a single weekend, especially if that weekend is only its fourth in release... Mortal expletives cannot convey this.

It's just ridiculous that there is no IMAX here. There is no reason for that. At all.

That is indeed a lot. However, I saw my 5th viewing on Tuesday. It wasn't great, solely because of the theater and image quality. I am going for #6 back to IMAX this weekend and I'm done after that. Don't want to wear the movie out before it comes to bluray.

So my friend from California got in town late last night and wants to go see Avatar tonight instead of tomorrow...6th viewing which I had not planned on doing honestly (till I found out my buddy was flying into town for the week) till I could get over to Indy to see it on IMAX...oh well :lol

And on that note:

Avatar is officially #2 world-wide.

Domestic: $374,445,852
+ Foreign: $757,306,612
------------------------------
= Worldwide: $1,131,752,464

Another $33m world-wide yesterday.

Banshee taming/flight. I think so too.

The middle section of the film, with Jake's initiation and training with Neytiri, is simply beyond gorgeous (the visuals, the music, everything). That whole section is my favorite part of the film by far. I really wish there'd been more of it. I literally could have watched 3 hours of those two just wandering around the Pandoran jungle and getting into adventures.

Though since Cameron has said the sequel would focus a lot more on the Jake/Neytiri relationship, we should be seeing a lot more of stuff like that in the next one.

Apparently, this guy will become available in Q2 of 2010 (for iZ3D gaming systems and RealD video), at prices starting at $90 -- with prescription eyewear to become available in Q3.

Hey does anybody know if these glasses will work in any RealD theater screen? Watching Avatar with these glasses would be really cool.

Thats not to rag on the climax, which is like the best directed, paced, and plain awesome action in years.

The action climax is wonderful and Cameron simply shames most other action directors with it, but the middle section was so beyond-fucking-beautiful that I can't put anything above it.

It's one of my favorite parts of any movie this year (and really decade), along with scenes like the tavern and the opening in Inglourious Basterds and the opening montage in Up (the latter of which is probably the most poignant and powerful scene out of any film I've watched this decade).

This entire post is full of win. I agree with everything you said :D

YAY @ #2 world-wide!

It really is a remarkable achievement. Titanic isn't going down quite as easily, though.
It is kind of hilarious looking a the all-time charts. Yay! Avatar is #2!

Only 711 million bucks to go. :lol

The action finale would be my second favorite scene, no doubt.

Well, I was gonna talk more about the merits of the film itself when there was a flood of those sales-age posts, but now that seems to be dying down, so I'll limit myself a little.

This was my first true experience with 3D movies, and I gotta say the effects were mindblowing. Especially when we're focused on characters behind a sheet of glass, or looking down a tunnel.

Other than that, I'd say its a pretty decent action/adventure flick, nothing really revolutionary besides the cinematography.

[spoilers]SPACE INDIANS[/spoilers]

I mean, everything was pretty cliche, but it's not necessarily done worse than what came before. The corporate villain guy sure isn't as good as Carter Burke (Aliens), and I'm also certain the whole "Big guys come beat up little guys but a big guy becomes a little guy and falls in love" has been done before, but I don't really hold that against it. The setup (beginning) was good, the adventures (middle) was great, the climax was OMG AWESOME, even if it's a bit predictable.

Is this because it was written like, 15 years ago? If so, I'll give James benefit of the doubt. When was Pocahontas released though? :p

And I'm not sure if there's merit to this, but a friend I saw the movie with said there's plans for a trilogy. I haven't been keeping up, so I could be wrong :p

There's some potential for future stories in this universe, like some things that would be good material

1.)Typical route-Earth comes back with more forces. Just the first, but bigger and badder. Really don't want this.

2.)A prequel or sequel focusing on the tribes, could be about a clan war or something.

3.)Awesomest idea-Predator comes to Pandora looking for a fight. Don't tell me you don't want this!

I think Avatar was a test for this, because the sequel will have
two huge blue aliens as the lead
.

Also i think Jake's training is far from done, there are so many things he doesn't know about the planet, moons, ect. And we will discover these things with him.

I agree with this. I honestly don't see that many humans involved in the sequel/sequels at all. Granted there will be some involvement, even more so if my other posts about my thoughts on a possible
Eywa trying to save Mother Earth
comes true, but I think this film proved that everyone loved the Jake/Neytiri and NA'Vi scenes and connected with them more than anyone else in the film. They can easily focus purely on them from this point forward.

Here's a pretty good, short interview Cameron did right before it opened when he talked about the idea of a "three film arc".

I like how he said he thought they'd know the movie would make enough money for sequels about two months after release, since he thought it would have long legs. He got the second part right, but the timeline was off a bit.

You're nuts if you think FOX will let a sequel fly without humans in them in a major way, regardless of how much money Avatar is making.
