OMG, amend this to "Ma'Jake" for jett's shitty ears, and Ill be forever in your debt :lol

Thank god or better yet thanks James Cameron for not choosing either of those actors, especially Gyllenhaal who is a terrible actor.
Neither Damon or Gyllenhaal would have had the same effect as Dicarprio had with Titanic, i'm guessing that's what they were hoping for.
This shows us again why studios should stay out of the filmmaking process, they don't know shit.

Yeah

Matt Damon is just inherently unlikeable to me, and Gyllenhal....really?

Sam Worthington just has this really likeable and relateable persona to him in the movie, while at the same time is credible as a kick ass action hero

Plus he's Aussie so, you know, that's pretty awesome.

Studio were pushing for Jake Gyllenhal (sp? fuck it) and Matt Damon as the lead in AVATAR.

wat the fuck that!

I don't want to see already famous actors portraying characters all over Hollywood. Bale's last TDK and Terminator combo is evidence. How the fuck am I supposed to watch the film when all I see is Bruce Wayne playing John Connor? Though, Bale is an alright actor and I would not have anyone else of his degree switch places with him.

But seriously? Gyllenhal? and Matt fucking Damon?

What are people ripping on Matt Damon for?

Matt Damon is great.
He just comes off as unlikeable to me, that's it!

He's great at playing a prick, see The Departed, but I dont see him as a likeable actor at all.

Matt Damon is just Matt Damon. His presence takes over the film. He's awesome.

I can't see anything other than Matt Damon. I could never have imagined him as Jake or the likes. All I see is Bourne, the other Bourne from his new Iraq movie, the other Bourne from The Informant, The other Bourne from The Departed and so on and so on.

Whaaat?

You've not seen Good Will Hunting? The Talented Mr. Ripley? Rounders? Saving Private Ryan? Those are all likeable roles to me (except maybe TMP, but you at least feel nervous as fuck for him).

Plus, in real life he's funny as hell. All around stand up bloke from what I've seen.

Yeah seen those (cept rounders) sorry :(

Maybe its just that he made such an impression in the Departed, that that role has kind of hovered over him for me, if that makes any sense. Maybe his next movie will change my mind.

either way, back to the original point, I dont think he would have fit the role regardless!

It all makes sense now. Worthington has said it took six months from the time Cameron cast him until he was able to convince the studios that he was right for the movie; Cameron stuck by Worthington. They must have been naming every other big star on earth in the meantime.

The man has a point. I would have loved to see what the Na'vi could do to defend themselves pre-Jake's entrance into their world. As is, the "They can only succeed once the white guy comes along" trope is definitely in effect.

That's bullshit because the Na'vi wouldn't have been attacked without Jake giving the RDA good quailty information.

So basically it's a moot point.

Damn, grats Cameron on now having directed the TWO highest grossing films of all time.

*bow*

Can't wait for Alita - it's almost guaranteed be the highest grossing manga adaptation of all time.

But it could totally bomb and still be the highest grossing manga adaptation of all time. That's not saying much. :P

Edit: This is the record Battle Angel needs to break to be significant.

We don't get daily worldwide figures. :P
Yes we do :p

We'll have the WW figure in about four hours.

With the domestic take today, that jumps Revenge of the Sith to land at #10. Seems on track for a $50-55m weekend.

you know where the fuck did Sam Worthington come from?

never heard of him and then BAM! he's in 2 huge movies.

And no doubt a third when clash of the titans comes out.

Well, Cameron cast him as Jake back in 2007, and Cameron himself personally recommended Sam for a role in Terminator: Salvation. It's just due to the length of Avatar's post-production process that one came out before the other, but Cameron started it all.

6.1m (-12%) Thursday

Double post, but with that 6.1, Avatar now sits at $380.5 million domestic, good for 10th place all-time. Transformers 2 and Spider-Man are bunched up at $402 and $403 million, respectively, so Avatar will easily leapfrog those this weekend, but #7 and #6 all-time are Dead Man's Chest ($423 million) and The Phantom Menace ($431 million). E.T. is next up, at $435 million, while Shrek 2 is at #4, with $441 million. To hit #7 this weekend, Avatar needs $43 million, compared to $51 million for #6 and $55 million for #5. Beating Shrek 2 would take a whopping $61 million weekend, which would equal an 11% drop. So, we'll see.

Thanks for the breakdown. So it has a good chance to be at # 4 sometime next week at the latest? Then it's all about the top 3 spots.

Yeah, it's going to jump into the top five by next weekend. This weekend is a bit tricky to predict; there's a theory that the game last night kept some people home, like last year (which was on the 8th), and so Friday could see a big bounce. I'm guessing $55m, but there's a wide margin for error.

Also, seems lots of western Europe is getting the crap kicked out of them by a snowstorm much like the east coast of the US when Avatar opened, which is expected to dip the international take from today through the weekend.
