Avatar was a documentary and it was filmed in real-time.
Okay, so I saw the movie for the 2nd time (this time in IMAX) and I don't see what all the fuss is about the IMAX experience (except for the sound... that was by far than when I saw it for the first time in reald 3d). It didn't look bad, and things do pop out more than they did when I first saw it, it was also quite blurry in places. The center of the screen was fine, but around the edges it was rather jarring.
I probably wouldn't complain if I had saw it in IMAX first though.
As a side note, the theatre was still packed for a 11am showing. That's nuts 5 weeks after opening.

Hollywood, might as well just quit. This movie, much like Star Wars in '77 (which I also saw in the theater at age 4), is a game changer.
My wife asked me how the movie was when I got home. My reply is that I did not just see a movie. I saw an experience. I'm kind of at a loss for words. The story would be my only complaint as it seemed kind of pedestrian and by-the-numbers, but the execution of the visuals, the entire world was alive, and it made the story great.
I've got another complaint, but its more of a medical one. Ever since I walked out of the theater, I've felt a little .. off. Kind of woozy at times. I've seen 3D movies before at the IMAX, but have never watched one where the whole film was 3D from beginning to end. I've been out of the theater for 2 hours now and this feeling isn't going away. A couple of times I've bent over to pick something up and felt like I was going to fall over. The feeling isn't really nausea, because I don't feel like I'm going to throw up. Its more like vertigo, like I'm just not centered or something.

If theres one thing thats not mentioned much that for me was more impressive than the visuals was the sound. When that massive
buckled over the whole theatre shook. It sounded like a bomb went off, very immersive and very real.

Edit: Jesus, I just checked the number, Didn't realize this was so close to Titanic. My estimate that it would pass Titanic on Valentine's day weekend were off :lol

I think that Harry Potter will sadly beat the record though. It's gaining momentum. And the last film will undoubtedly be HUGE.
Also 3D ticket sales helped Avatar big time, otherwise I think it would be just behind ROTK or a little above it. But not that far.

Bringing up 3D ticket sales for AVATAR as a crutch is silly. AVATAR itself took the risk and created that attraction. Before this film, a wide 3D release was seen as commercial suicide. They took a helluva gamble and deserve to reap the rewards.
So far this thread has been a blast. I'll rate the type of posts that are most interesting to me:
1. People who saw the movie for the first time in the last 2 weeks. Its so interesting to see people going to the movie after so much pre-release and post-release hype and still blowing their expectations (which are crazy inflated) out of the water.
2. Behind the scenes tidbits, script to screen differences, tidbits about scenes that were cut
I know numbers are numbers in this thread, but it'd be interesting to see AVATAR's WW gross (or at least, domestic gross) adjusted for inflation between Titanic (1997) and now. Including the difference in ticket prices (regular and 3D and regular). Im sure this debate will reach far when AVATAR beats out Titanic WW. Enough for someone to actually do the calculations.
Also, does anyone have the all-time combined revenue/profit from Titanic's Theatrical run/VHS and DVD sales?

Harry Potter hasn't even managed to duplicate the success of it's first movie (which is still far short of Titanic)... and given that inflation should be HELPING the Potter franchise. It is losing momentum if anything

Other scenes where there's a brilliant use of audio was the ear-splitting bullet on metal sound effects. It was just really well done.
And holy shit at those numbers. I mean we all knew it was going to happen but damn. I need to catch this film at least one more time before it stops being shown in cinemas.

I'm just looking at the top 10 world-wide chart and it's got 3 Harry Potter films in there.
I'm just thinking there's bound to be a ton of hype when the last film hits (2012?) and I think it can come pretty close.
Also yeah it's impressive that a 3D film did so damn well. But I'm still most impressed by Titanic since it sold so many seats. Avatar definitely caught up quick. But ticket prices are so expensive these days too.
EDIT: Maybe the extra billion is a bit much. But it will most definitely be number 3 all time.

Yeah I think we need more examples to see how well 3D boosts gross. Toy Story 3 is the next one I guess.

I'm the biggest Harry Potter nerd and the last film won't come close to Avatar. None have broken a billion, all have been $900millioin+ though. I expect the last one will probably finish @ 1.3-1.4 billion.

Kill Bill vol 2 is one of the few where the grosses of the two movies have been similar.

.The two movies will gross a similar amount for the simple fact that all the others have grossed a similar amount. Nobody should be surprised if DHI and DHII pass $1B but anyone talking Avatar numbers is being delusional. We already know the estimated demand for a HP movie and it's not $2B - it's not even close.

Why can't you be entertained by both? I liked Avatar a lot but I still enjoyed "A Prophet" and "In the Loop" as much and possibly even more for the latter.
