I dont see how the title will matter.

People will see big blue aliens in trailers and posters and everyone in the world will know that its the sequel to Avatar, even if its called something else.
Hah! Quite so. Those "blue cat people" are the marketing themselves, no one will give a damn what the movie is titled. Funny how that all worked out, when considering how the "blue cat people" were originally deemed likely to cause the first film to fail. :D

Giving this movie my last Imax viewing tonight (will be my 2nd Imax, 4th overall viewing) before most of the screens are replaced by Alice in Wonderland and watching it with my cute coworker. I hope our hairs tangle afterwards!
XD

Only award it lost is "Compositing in a feature motion picture" which it lost to District 9. To be fair, the compositing in D9 was outstanding, but the final Jake/Neytiri moment in Avatar completely obliterates anything in D9 in terms of compositing..

I agree, though I can't begrudge D9 one award. Were it not for Avatar, I think it would have won a lot this year. Poor guys. :lol

Saw the movie for the last time in theaters - at least unless they do a re-release. I was just reading Ebert's Oscar predictions, and I think he hit on the shortest, most accurate description of Avatar I've seen:

The top-grossing movie in history, and also a very good film and a sensational experience.

Which sums it up all across the board.

One thing I've settled on: in my first few viewings the occasional use of the long-range camera doing the sudden rapid zoom-in bugged me. It's so out of place. But I think makes sense after thinking over why Cameron does it. It's used to convey what someone is looking at, from their perspective. It's used twice from Jake's perspective. The rest are from Eywa's, watching events unfold. It's used when Jake is first flying to the jungle as an avatar, when the the Home Tree starts to fall, when he's rallying the clans, when Quaritch's armada is heading to the Tree of Souls, and finally looking up at the bomber heading to the tree at the end - literally from the Tree of Soul's perspective. I think it's meant to show that Eywa has been monitoring Jake and the events all along, waiting until necessary to step in at the end.

Anyway. Brilliant film. Cameron has no equal.

That's an interesting interpretation of the use of the rapid zoom-in shots. I think you are probably right. I'm thinking Eywa will play a bigger role in the sequel.

Also, yes, ever since Aliens, Cameron has been the king of action. Nobody else even comes close.

I already called him on it.

Also, no one liked my purposefully bad AHBUHDAR 2 poster. :(

Its because most of us Arnold fans try to pretend Collateral Damage doesn't exist. Had it been a strict Avatar/Predator crossover I'm sure the response would have been much warmer.

Ok, in hindsight, I guess I deserved that.

Dammit Ghaleon! Change your avatar back already. I almost always skip over your posts now because I forget its you.
Okay, enough is enough.

Also, Avatar went up 18% yesterday, both from Monday and compared to last week, to end up at #2 for the day. At the pace Shutter Island is falling and Avatar holding or increasing, it could end up with one last day at #1 before Alice ejects it from 3D screens. Which would be kind of fitting, in the end.

You forgot my favorite shot in the whole film. At the end when Neytiri hits Quiritch with the first arrow, the second arrow being shot is from Quiritch's point of view. Copying the way eyes focus and zoom and everything. It's so quick but so brilliant that I've brought it up in this thread multiple times now.

Sergio Aragones Avatar parody strips. Thought some of these were pretty funny:

You're right, that's another, such a brillaint shot. It just highlights how all of them are from someone's perspective, and I like the idea that the ones where no one is present are used to signify Eywa's attention.

One of the shots you noted, "looking up at the Valkyrie bomber at the end" was actually from Mo'at's perspective.

I got invited to see this again Thursday since it is the final 3D viewing in town since my local theater with 3D screens is giving them all to Alice. We have a group of almost 50 going Thursday to see it one last time.

Saw it again and loved it. So much attention to details. The one that stands out to me is when Netyri is about to jump onto the red banshee following Jake's lead but hesitates as she reaches the banshee instead of simply jumping onto it.

The Imax theatre was about 60% full. This one guy behind me was seriously in a phone conversation for the first 15 minutes of the movie. Dude deserves to get smacked. Our seats were pretty close to the screen. I dunno if that caused me to see a lot more ghosting than the first time around. The pop up was also less effective. I dunno if I simply adjusted to 3D movies more easily or what. Minor annoyances. After the movie ended, my coworker and I (we both saw the movie already) started clapping and the whole audience followed.

Perhaps, but I like my explanation better. :p

Yeah, her performance is really detailed. I like how at the end of Jake's little speech she's cheering with the rest of them, and then turns and gives Jake this really worried, "now what?" look.

I still never did end up seeing this a fourth time. I saw it the 3 times in December, and not since. One more go around might be in order.

I just did, today. Turns out Dolby 3D isn't that different from RealD, at least to me.

Sorry, man. A few pantywaists in the LOST thread have sucked the fun of the proceedings for me for the time being. Im in self imposed exile now.

Watched it for the first time last weekend with the girlfriend in 3D and was blown away. You're in the theater for 3 hours, but it didn't feel like 3 hours went by. I don't even recall there being a dull moment in the movie, and I will definitely buy this on Blu-Ray which will be my first Blu-Ray movie purchase. I never got to see this in an Imax theater, but I would have loved to, awesome experience. I was pissed that my girlfriends son fell asleep during it though, kid was begging to see it and only made it an hour.

BAIL OU---

Wait....

:p

Those zoom shots are probably there for the same reason that they were in SW:AotC or that lens flares are in video games and other movies with a lot of CG. It helps to fool the audience into thinking they are watching something real (meaning 'shot on camera').

Cameron used a hand-held camera for nearly the entire film to provide that effect. Every scene that's not flying through the air is hand-held, lots of subtle movement to provide that feeling. Many of the zoom-ins were clearly used to show someone's perspective: Jake's Quaritch's, Moat's. The others are open to interpretation.

Perhaps.

But what I said is fact. The zoom is there to sell the idea that a camera was used.

EDIT - Didn't mean that to sound snappy. Not refuting your position, just pointing out that those things are open to subjective interpretation.

Not sounding snappy. I'm disagreeing on the reasoning - Cameron uses a hand-held style through the entire movie. He doesn't need to throw in some other moves to let people know he's using a camera. Which is what led me to wonder why he used that method, which is how I ended up with my interpretation. Which may or may not be correct. :p

Got back from watching this about two hours ago for the first time. i'm so pissed at myself for listening to my friend's stupid opinion. My girlfriend was so blown away by it that she wants to go back tomorrow. Couldn't believe the entire imax theater was full to the point where people were on the steps watching the movie. AMAZING!

Just got back from seeing it one last time.
There was a freaking line outside the theater, and everyone was going to see Avatar! :lol

The theater wasn't exactly packed, but it was just funny.
Saw it in Dolby this time. It looked great.

The theaters are still packed? That's crazy.

Watched it for the second time last night, at the last showing which was at 10:30 PM. There were about thirty people in the giant 3dxd theater thing they had... it was so great to have whatever seat I want, and to just relax in that recliner seat and put my feet up without worrying about getting packt in like sardines in a can.

I watched it for the fourth and final time yesterday(movie's leaving most theaters today here), took my mom with me, who hadn't seen it yet. :P I still love the fucking thing and I wish it didn't leave the theaters...ever. :P My mom really liked it I think, expectedly she didn't care much for the long action sequenece at the end though. :P It was her first digital and digital 3D experience and she was blown away by the image quality just during the previews. :lol She also asked me a couple of times during the movie if the avatars were really "done by computers". :P It's like she couldn't believe me. Pretty funny.

The people complaining about brightness loss and ghosting really need to find themselves a new movie theater. Looks awesomely perfect where I go.

i'm going for the last time on sunday. and this is probably the nerdiest thing i'll say, but it feels sad to see it leave 3d theatres :lol

but then i have free tickets to see it at an outdoor cinema on the 14th. so it ain't all bad :P

That would be pretty hilarious, and fitting. Only $113k away from SI, so I can see it happening. What a weird, absurd box office run Avatar has had. Not only in its debut and holds, but in how it's getting ejected from most theaters while it's still doing great business.

Good to see your avatar back. I regret that I was unable to see a last showing, though I believe they're still playing it at late showings around here. I know that Alice in Wonderland sessions at the Fox Studios IMAX near me has 6:30pm as the latest session, which I'm guessing means that AVATAR will still be playing the 9:30 session. All hope is not yet lost!

+1 . A perfect way to end an amazing run.

Too bad there aren't enough 3D movies to go around. Avatar would still be in the top 10 for another month at least if it weren't for the 3D theater bottleneck. Things aren't going to get any better anytime soon with the other 3D movies coming up either.

I checked fandango. The imax theatre in town is not picking up Alice?! It's still showing Avatar in full capacity at least till 3/11, and schedules after that are not posted yet.

GhaleonEB said:
So getting ejected from 3D screens by Alice made Avatar drop 36% from last Friday. Basically, it knocked it down to a normal week over week drop rather than a normal one for Avatar. :lol

I went to see Cop Out this week (don't watch it) and the line for Avatar (last showing in 3D imax) was insane. There's rumors that they will bring it back to iMAX here in a few weeks.

Avatar will never die. Sheesh, maybe I will go see it again over spring break if there is a theatre still showing it around me.
