My blu-ray copy from Amazon just arrived. This will be my first time seeing it. Hopefully it won't disappoint. Will watch it tonight.

This will be incredible! Most likely the most visually vivid Blu-ray film and will stay that way for quite some time.
Yeah, I just read this on Home Theater Forum:

Good BD's have an average weighted bitrate around 22Mb. "Avatar" has an average weighted of about 34; peaks at over 40! (40.8), and never drops below 25. The DTS-MA track is also near perfect. with it's base rate at near 3.6Mb, high rate of 5.2!

Both of these absolutely press the boundaries of spec. People had wondered how to equate this, and they had shrugged off "superbit" comparison, but I don't know of any other way. There is no title released that I can think of that carries even close to the bitrate. And a large number of titles that we think of as "good" that are encoded at around 1/2 the bitrate.

And the movie supposedly takes up 46GB of data out of a 50GB disc

Just finished the Blu. All over our faces indeed.

And according to the subs it is "Ma Jake."
When I was in the theatre they used "Ma'Jake" too >.> Oh this crazy Na'vi language!
Are there any BD screencaps floating around? I didn't really like the movie, but the visuals were definitely stunning :<

I doubt it.

Also, 2D ftl.

Man I was like this, I saw it 2 times in the Cinema, 3D all the way. But man was I wrong, this 2D BD is amazing as fuck.. no joke. The movie still shines. I saw it 2 times today, ones the BD and ones the DVD (also a good transfer). The DVD I saw at my parents house.. they liked the movie a lot.

But I do Fear that if this looks this good, how will the 3D version look...

I don't wanna see the 3d version on a Panasonic, because I will need to buy that tv :(

Ehhh at that guy, many blu-ray movies lately use up the first disc all for the feature, with crazy bitrates, for instance:

Minority Report

Disc Size: 47,854,980,188 bytes
Feature Size: 47,201,415,168 bytes
Video Bitrate: 37.14 Mbps

...but still, all these impressions are making me wanna buy this thing. :P It'd be the first time I'd have to double dip.

Had no intention of buying the gimped version.

Was gonna wait it out and just buy the REAL version, no double-dipping for me.

Went with it a friend during lunch to BB pick up his copy.

Held the Blu-Ray in my hand.

-$21.94 from my account.

Doooo it

I wish I could post screenshots, but I don't have a BD drive, and no one on the internet has seemingly been able to get any screenshots either

Way to fight the man, but seriously your (and others) reasoning only made sense if you give a flying fuck about extras. I personally do not but I know some say they do.

Yeah the blu-ray is mind-blowingly awesome. The only thing that might have looked a little weird was the chase scene with the carnivore thing (the name escapes me) he looked a little bit plasticy if you know what I mean. I might just be the sheen of his skin though.

One of the most amazing parts of the Blu-Ray is at the start of the film in the Cryo chambers

Scene looks absolutely incredible and totally retains an amazing depth of field even without the 3D.

My copy just popped through the letterbox, w00t. At least they are being pretty up-front about the double-dip, this is the most bare bones presentation imaginable, not a single special feature :lol

I wonder if this will set Blu-ray/DVD records as well. Blu-ray's gotta be in the bag, right?

This will definitely set a new Blu-Ray record

+ Put a huge HDTV in a store, properly calibrate all settings, show off Avatar on it...HD and Blu format will sell itself...

Trust me, it had NOTHING to do with "fighting the man" but I'm just anal about the DC versions of films, especially Cameron movies and wasn't sure I'd care about a theatrical version of the film.

And yes, I LOVE extras.

I only wanted to buy the movie once but, (for me), holding it in my hand was the killer.

That and the "discount" I'll get when I register the bare-bones version.

I think the $20 dollar buy-in really helped it's case too.

This. The quality of this release is so great I dont see as much complaining about a double dip as expected. Very nice.

Yeah its the only double-dip I've ever taken part in outside of the obvious Terminator 2 releases.
LOTR on DVD for me. I couldn't wait for the extended versions on DVD. But I will wait for the Blu-Rays.

EDIT: And double dip on T2? I triple dipped on DVD. Bought the original release, then the Ultimate Edition (extras and DTS-ES sound), then the Extreme edition (superior picture quality).

Finished w/rifftrax. Good stuff :lol

Blu-Ray looks amazing, don't know if I will pick up next version in November. Probably depend on how much extra footage there is.

I've got three copies of Terminator 2 on my shelf right now, and that's having sold the HD DVD and the VHS. I also have four copies each of Pan's Labyrinth, Serenity and Transformers: The Movie, and two copies of numerous movies.

I hope my copy of this turns up tomorrow. By all accounts it's one of the best-looking BDs yet.

Wasn't Terminator 2 more like a 8x dip?
Not as much as Army of Darkness. (Original, Single disc THX,Two disc limited THX, single disc director's edition, two disc bootleg edition (paper package I think), screwhead edition. There might be more that I am forgetting. Me? I am happy with my limited edition two disc version from late 99. The individually numbered edition.

And as for T2, I ditched the last DVD version I bought to get the Skynet Blu of it. (And to some other people there was a DVD two pack of T2 and Total Recall together for really cheap.)

The weird thing is people comparing bitrates of lossless audio tracks.
It is a pissing contest really. The audio is lossless and spectacular, and the image is just fucking crazy on this thing. Of course it is a dump straight from the digital source, and more amazing that it is in the native resolution the "film" was shot in. I was worried about the movie losing some impact in 2D, but the image quality of this overcomes that.

Dead said:
The image quality on the Blu will destroy the quality of even the best cinema you saw Avatar at, I guaran-fuckin-tee it.
You understand that this is factually impossible right? The level of resolution in a theater print demolishes *any* home theater analogue.

The funny thing is though, the movie was shot using a 1080p camera. Well, 2k, but it is close enough. So basically we are getting the purest image available. So were the 3d cinemas.

Technically that's true, but I have no difficulty believing that a perfect 1080p transfer on say a 50" screen *appears* sharper than a 2K or 4K projection onto a 100-foot cinema screen.

in terms of level of detail, I found the Blu-ray MUCH more enjoyable than both IMAX and RealD

I could've sworn Cameron went with 4K on Avatar. Learned something new today!

Not to mention that not all cinemas have the latest and greatest hardware. When I saw Kick-Ass a couple of weeks ago I was just thinking about how much better it will look on Blu-ray, because my TV is properly calibrated and... you know... fully in focus.

The camera was only capable of stereoscopic 2k from what I remember. He would have preferred 4k, but I thought he and Pace couldn't get stereoscopic 4k.

Well...Avatar is a digital movie, and the digital RealD/Dolby3D presentation delivered to those theaters was just 2048x871(2.35:1) while the blu-ray is 1920x1080(16:9)...wait I just realized the blu-ray actually has a higher resolution. :lol

The digital cinema release did weigh about 100GB more than the BD, though. :P
