Extended version is definitely better. Backstory and conflict is much better fleshed out, new action bits are nice. Plus the Hour or so of additional deleted scenes are worth it alone.

The movie had a 250+ million budget and access to dozens of artists. Of course it was intentional. Cameron didn't want the Navi to be too alien. He wanted Neytiri to still be considered "hot" and modeled their society after Indian/African tribes so the Navi could connect with the audience. There's a method to the madness people.

Extended Cut is indeed better. Adds some much needed backstory.

Extended cut is much better. DAT TSU TEY.

Also Grace's scene with Jake was a pretty big cut.
 
I like the medium length cut the most. I don't care for the Earth intro. The scene about the dead sister was good though, it breaks up the learning montage. It's like T2, no one cut is really as I'd prefer.
 
The added scenes made very little impact on the movie for me. The Tsu'tey death scene on its own is pretty great but it does break up the pace a bit.

edit: yeah the Earth intro is no good. It looks very cheap too and small compared to the rest of the movie. Frankly, it doesn't belong.
 
For me it's the scene extensions that make the extended cut superior.

Stuff like Neytiri's flyby greeting of the others making their way to the banshees in the mountains and this extension that actually shows you the pilots of the Valkyrie shutting decoupling.

Its too bad it wasn't an entire segment of film like in the original script. More like 10 minutes or so. And kept stuff like the terrorist attack on the subway and whatnot.

As far as it feeling cheap...frankly its simply not 100% finished, its pretty obvious.
 
Yeah the guys who did the effects on the Earth intro did a really shitty job. You could tell that whole opening intersection bit was just a big soundstage.

Seems more like it was cut from the film before it was finished, and it wasn't 100% finished for the blu-ray.

If it had been in the theatrical release, there would have been more work done and would have had to gone by the dude in charge of the CG continuity (don't remember his name but hes worked with JC for a long time)

Theres also that HUGE concept art of the city in the Making of Book. I wouldn't be surprised if that was originally a shot that took place after the camera lifts up and overlooks the street, to give a better sence of scale, but who knows.

Cameron is a good writer. He's had a few clunky lines, particularly in his later films, but they are very solid scripts. And beyond the dialogue, they're consistently well constructed scripts with strong leads, supporting characters and always with superb world building. I know you know this, but while those are probably his strongest scripts, his later work is solid.

Cameron's writing is a big part of why his movies are so good.

Yup. Sometimes the setups are weak (parts of Titanic), but holy crap does he make up for it.

Came across this site The Auteurcast where they choose a filmmaker, watch one of his or her films every week in order of release and then discuss it for around an hour or so.

Obviously, they're doing James Cameron right now. Just finished The Abyss podcast discussion and they just released T2.

Cameron also talking about perhaps doing the Avatar sequels as a Chinese co-production for the incredible revenue incentives that could come out of the region. He wants DAT Chinese box office.

use Chinese actors as performancecapture actors because any accent issues will hide within the Na’vi accent,” says Cameron.

“So we can have Chinese Na’vi; [and in the live-action sequences]we can also have Chinese actors who speak English in the film.

We are projecting a future in Avatar, and if you project that future out, it is logical that there would be a number of Chinese amongst the contingent on Pandora.”

Avatar already set Chinese box office records.
And unless the films have no political messages, there's a good chance that they'll be banned or curtailed anyway.

Kind of actually seems like the chinese got wiped out and their culture absorbed into America's, really.
 
This thread bump made me realize that I haven't seen Avatar since I watched it in theaters.

I should change that when I make some time.

So I took some time out to watch Avatar 3D last night again. I haven't done so in a while. And even to this day... it blows me away! The attack on home tree is quite possibly the most beautiful action sequence I've ever seen.

Especially the aftermath... and when Jake gets back into Avatar form. The ashes and atmosphere combined with the 3D... beyond words.

I have a feeling Cameron probably just confirmed shooting at HFR and will stick with his plan to shoot the sequels at 60fps.
