"Oh but guys, she totally has reduced landing lag! She totally has a lot more knockback on everything! She looks like Melee Marth! Best girl. RIP Marth. They should have replaced Marth."

Funny how that all worked out.

It's fun remembering the crazy comments of early smash.

Dat Fsmash tho...

Sonic Boom is one game.
Sonic Colors and Generations (both released within the past five years) are amazing.
I don't think that's "soooo many".

Dont forget the years before

- sonic black knight
- sonic heroes
- shadow
- sonic unleashed
- sonic 2006

Id put lost world in the good game category but i know some will disagree

Which is sad since since his presence on Nintendo platforms is minimal and practically non-existent at this point. Both Snake and Ryu aren't really appropriate fits especially not with Simon Belmont and a SquareEnix rep still missing.
So you don't want the face of fighting games for not being Nintendo appropriate... but you want a buff dude wrapped in leather that whips bloody undead creatures.

Yeah, that's why I was so upset when hearing about Roy's files in the game. At this point I kinda gave into resignation, but still. I think I would be less offended if Lucina wasn't in the starting roster and an alt costume like she was originally intended to be.
We have 3 characters with practically identical movesets, from the same series. A series that is well known for its variety of character archetypes. Yet the 5 characters we get all are sword users, and only one of those 5 is actually using other means of attacks (magic).

Where's the polearms, axes, daggers, pure magical attacks/wands?

Blame Sakurai for half-assing it. Each of those characters could be unique if he actually cared to do so.

I remember that one gif of the autocanceling nair everyone posted.

I'm still legit salty that Lucina is literally just 'Marth except worse'.

Yup. When she was announced I though "Oh, alternate costume! That's cool." like how Villager has female ones and little Mac has the hoody. Then she was a seperate character and I thought "Oh... Ok. Maybe she is like Lucas where she has some different moves?" And then nope, exactly the same except even damage on the sword instead of the tip doing the most.

And now with Roy, where we have another clone just with fire element attacks and explosion on his B and he's DLC it's just... Yeah.. Maybe if they changed the characters up I'd be ok with it, then they'd be like Lucas and Ness where they share a base but are different even in the moves that are the same, the have different properties.

Super hyped for Ryu though and his stage. Hope he has Ken, Akuma and Dan alt colours.

Unleashed and Heroes were pretty decent, I definitely enjoyed Heroes. Not amazingly great, but definitely not garbage. Shadow wasn't all that bad either (though that might just be a guilty pleasure of mine), people just love to hate on it being "edgy". 2006 was trash but at least it is hilariously glitchy; one of the most entertaining speedruns to watch.

Never played Black Knight.

I'm honestly more surprised about the Akira Mii costumes hopefully we can get more Mii costumes of other Capcom, Namco and Sega properties.

Tales of, Tekken, Darkstalkers, Final Fight, hell even Shenmue, it could get pretty crazy.

We're getting Heihachi from Tekken alongside Akira and Jacky.

Street Fighter II on SNES was far more successful than all of the Simon-led Castlevania games combined.

and? I'm sure there are loads of games that were more succesful then those. That doesn't change the fact that Castlevania has been a bigger part of Nintendo's history for longer than almost any other third party franchise.

This game has over 40 completely unique characters and fewer than 10 clones/derivations. That's very impressive for a fighting game. You'll never be taken seriously for implying that Sakurai is lazy.

Ok. So you want me to believe that megaman is more influential than a game series that defined an entire genre, despite doing nothing of the kind (the 2d side scroller already being very well developed by the time megaman dropped), and having less sales, all because he was the title character?

To be blunt: You're going to have to come up with a better justification than that.

All of this is pointless arguing anyway, if you were going to pick 4 characters as most recognisable, it would probably be mario, sonic, pikachu and probably pac man. Certainly not megaman.
I'm saying Ryu was a small part of Street Fighter and isn't as recognizable as Mega Man. The same way that a solo artist is probably more well known then the lead singers of a lot of bands, even though said band may be more popular as a group then the solo artist is.

I also just said that I wouldn't put Mega man on the Mt Rushmore either, so I dont even know where your last paragraph is coming from.

But if I had to pick one or the other, I think more people would know who Mega Man is then Ryu, because Ryu was a part of a group of characters. I was never arguing about if Street Fighter was more influential then Mega Man or not. I was arguing on a character by character basis.

Lucina is superior to Marth. Boots swag > tippin' and shit.

oh god, dem BOOTS

Both Marth and Lucina are dumpster characters imo. Marth is a bit better but only in killing power.

I really gotta hear SmashGAF's impressions on Roy if I'm dropping $5 bucks for him. Still on the fence about him. Ryu and Lucas all day though!

His point that there are at least 4 other video game characters more popular then Mr. Fighting Game. I could show my parents that picture of the big four and they would know who everyone is. They definitely wouldn't know who Ryu is by name and they would probably struggle naming the series he's from.

Yeah, but isn't that the vast majority of the smash roster? My mom actually plays some video games but I guarantee you she'd have no idea who the following are:

Ness, Captain Falcon, Fox, Falco, Lucas, any of the fire emblem characters, Shulk, Dark Pit, Palutena, Pit, Rosalina, any of the post gen 1 pokemon, Olimar, Shiek, Ganondorf, Lil Mac

So lets axe all of those while we're at it!

Listen guys, here's what up in my opinion: of the three upcoming DLC characters currently known Ryu is the MOST popular of them all by a fucking LONG SHOT. So if popularity of the character is is your metric for worthiness then why are you mad about Ryu?

I can't believe Sakurai didn't consider talking to your parents first.

LOL

Roy is a returning character. Sakurai said he would bring back some old characters and if I were to pick anyone from the previous SSB series to bring back, it would have been him.

For Ryu however, he is a new addition to the roster. So on top of the bazillions SF and Capcom cross-over games where I can use it to beat my opponent, now Smash too? Pffft. Gimme the Chorus Boys from Rhythm Heaven or someone who can bring something exciting to the table.

Im not one to shit on people's fave characters (people shit on my fave character, Jigglypuff, enough), so im not going to call Roy shitty, but it's weird you call Ryu more boring. If i were to pick a character to return, i would have picked Wolf, because he is more different from his base than Roy is, and Marth already has a clone, a 3rd clone is deffinitely more boring than Ryu, even if he has over exposure.

And i don't think people should complain that we get 3rd party characters instead of first party, because when we get down to it, 3rd party characters come from partnerships and cross promotion with other companies, so they're extras to any potential future first party character, so there is still chances for chorus boys and stuff.

I understand being excited for your fave character to return, even if he's Marth the 3rd, but it just weird to call Ryu "boring".

Not to mention he opened the flood gates for the possibility of additional sega or namco characters now that there is the precedent of more than one 3rd party from the same company. That's exciting.

Given that it's likely these characters are releasing simultaneously alongside Lucas, production of them would have started way before the ballot even began.

They were leaked roughly a week or two after the ballot went up.

So I think you've picked up on the conspiracy that most of us have already been aware of: Nintendo has time travel and are keeping it for themselves.

Why else would they have released the Wii U, a system basically designed for failure, without specific knowledge that it needs to be released to keep the world from falling apart? It's the only possible explanation.

You misunderstand the ballot. It runs until October. Lucas, Roy and Ryu (and likely some other characters, as well) were already planned, and were likely in development alongside Mewtwo.

In addition, the ballot is not a case of "whoever gets the most votes, wins." It's just a way to gauge interest. If the majority votes for one character and Sakurai thinks that character is shit, Sakurai's vote > all.

Ahh I see. Yeah I have not been keeping up with anything, so my ignorance was showing. Thanks for the clarification =)

I don't know why everyone is assuming that me saying that Ryu isn't one of the top four most recognisable video game characters means that he doesn't deserve to be in Smash. I didn't say anything of the sort. They're two different conversations.

I am a bit surprised with some of the negative reaction to both Ryu and Roy :l.

Ryu represents a massive shift in the gaming world in the form of Street Fighter II; that game established the foundation for many, many future fighting games and it cemented the series as an important milestone in gaming. Not to mention, like others here pointed out, the many versions of SFII sold very well on Nintendo platforms and SFIV's 3DS port sold really well at the systems launch. The series has a place with Nintendo and to me personally, fits a lot more within the Smash-verse then Solid Snake ever did; a few NES games and a remake/port of the original MGS on the GC....and a 3DS port of MGS3....and that's it :l.

Roy is in a similar spot like Mewtwo and Lucas; a cut character that many missed, so bringing him back is not only for the fans of Smash but is also very easy to make (as they don't have to do that much in bringing him into Smash 4; porting over assests/movement/animations/ect from Melee and Brawl). Granted, we already got a 'clone' of Marth through Lucina but Roy has differences (even if isn't that much :l).

Either way, really excited about this news and while I would have liked others to join the roster (Chors Kids would have been cool, Ice Climbers would have been a nice return, Eggman would be really interesting with his moveset, Shantae and Shovel Knight would have been great reps for Nintendo's Indie Partners :D), I am buying the DLC cast the moment they launch :).

Glad to see Ryu confirmed. Not so much for Roy, another sword fighter.
I tire of so many characters that only use their fists and feet.

No seriously, why is this a complaint? There's 50+ characters and only about a less than a 5th use swords and damn near completely differently (bar Marth/Lucina/and probably Roy). The complaint that I see that can even remotely agree with is the fact that there are way too many Mario characters.
