Fantastic result in the ITM Cup last night, with the mighty Waikato winning the Ranfurly Shield, taking us third total in terms of shield wins and defences.

Bit rough from the ABs so far.

Feel like Tonga blew that. The idea to keep it tight was the right one, but they should've went wide after sucking the All Blacks in.

And Brendan Lacey definitely bottled that. Tony Woodcock should've gone to the bin and Tonga given a penalty try.

Fucking awful reffing. Should have been a penalty try.

Against the pitch? Both teams lost their footing on that shit turf. It's going to be a mud pit by the time Scotland and Samoa play on it.

Anyway, good and bad half. Woodcock is too old, Crockett needs to start. Read and Kaino don't look great either, hopefully Messam comes on fairly quickly in the second half.

I don't think that was a penalty try. Still bemused by some of the reffing - like calling "Use It!" when the ball is still in the front row.

EDIT: also NZ looking vulnerable under the high ball - missed 3 or 4.

I gave up hope of the ABs just curb stomping everyone this tournament a while ago, but damn this game is nice. Tonga is surprisingly fierce.

I always love to see Tonga or Samoa play the all blacks, for the double challenges at the start.

Scoreline would be better if Naholo didn't bottle it. But the handing errors have been bad again.

I really hope ireland lose to the French on the weekend. France will beat this all blacks I think.

Strange that Reid is responsible for at least half. he's normally such a solid player. AND he's binned. wtf.

Yes it is cutting up (being a football pitch) but that's not the point. Repeated infringement at the scum by new zealand on the try line combined with the pulling down of the maul previously means it should be a penalty try.
This isn't some anti new zealand post it just rubs me up the wrong way when you see something not being given.

I could give you the maul (though it shouldn't have happened in the first place, that penalty was one of the worst of the tournament) but the ref has no clue at the scrums. The Tongans have been infringing too but we're the ones getting penalised.

And with that bonus point NZ top the group.

(And there was me thinking that Milner & Scudder were two different people)

ABs rusty as hell. You're not suddenly going to get better at rugby for the quarterfinals. You're only going to be as good as you've been in these games.

They just don't look quite right technically. Something seems off with them.

I have a suspicion they are holding something back for the knockout phases - they don't seem to be trying very much from open play in the middle of the park.

Sure there's some vulnerabilities - they aren't bossing the breakdown like we are used to seeing, high ball and scrum are weak. But there's something else missing and I think it is deliberate.

Joke post?

Hanson said they're trying different things in the pool games because they think they've become a bit predictable over the last four years, so a lot of the errors have been a result of the players getting used to the new systems. This performance is much better than the one last week, so they are in fact improving.

Besides, if previous RWCs have proven anything it's that performances in pool games mean little going into the knockout games. In 2007, the ABs looked like world beaters but then (due to a perfect storm of reasons), were knocked out in the quarters. In 2011, France looked like shit, losing to Tonga in their last pool games, yet they made it all the way to the Final and were only 2 points from winning it.

Ah, that would explain a lot of it.

Still. Got the expected result, though the highlights of the game for me are (1) that first try in the 12th minute, Harlem Globetrotters stuff on the RH touchline and (2) Tonga's fantastic maul at the end of the first half that in any sane world would have led to a try.

EDIT: Now we have seven of the eight quarter-finalists - only Japan and Scotland to sort out this weekend. Plus of course who-plays-whom between Aus/Wales, France/Ireland.

Sounds like Woodcock might be out of the cup. Sad to see a legend go down like that but to be honest, it's a bit of a blessing in disguise. His scrummaging has been below his usual standards this year and his play around the field has slowed down, hurting us at the breakdown and on defence. Just seems like it's been one year too far for him.

My only other worries are that Read was terrible, directly responsible for like half our handling errors, and Kaino was anonymous. It seems like Hanson has banked everything on those two regaining form, so he hasn't given Vito time to take the starting 8 spot or Messam to take the starting 6 spot back. Problem is they haven't regained that form but we're going to have to stick with them anyway because we don't really have any other choice.

On the bright side, Dan Carter looked like the Dan Carter of old, running, kicking and directing the backline really well. Cane, NMS, B Smith and our bench were also all class, while Nonu and Whitelock were very good too.

It'll be interesting to see which team makes it out of the pool, I would expect it to be Scotland but it's certainly not clear cut at the moment.

It seems that both Farrell and Rowntree have a one match ban due to the half time incident at the Australian match last week. Not that it really matters with them playing against Uruguay but it's hardly the ideal way to be playing their last match in their own world cup.

I just hope they mange to play some decent rugby in the match for their fans and themselves. They're a vastly superior team to Uruguay but can you imagine the additional embarrassment of finishing off their campaign with another poor match.

Not one of the Australian squad would make it into the Wales team.

However, I should emphasise that this is on account of them being Australian and is in no way a reflection of their abilities at Rugby which are awesome.

Feeling confident about today. Front row, back row, and backline all the best we've had for more than a decade. Tuilagi is a big loss for them.

This is probably the biggest weekend of rugby since last weekend.

I sympathise for those who like to watch every game -- you'll be doing nothing else on Sunday.

If Scotland win today, we have all the home nations except England through.

What a time to be a Celt.

This is also traditionally the time Scotland do something mind-bogglingly stupid, so it'll be a nervy day.

Cotter will have planned for that. If it is too early Scotland will lose their nerve, if too late they will lose the match. So I'm predicting mind-bogglingly stupid thing at about the 25-30 minute mark.

I hope so.

Wavering at the moment between confident optimism and awareness of Scottish tendencies to play just worse than the opposition. Should go through, but panicking a bit.

Still, all the English guys at work who always said they would support Scotland if England were out have said they want Samoa to win, so at least I don't have to put up with that anymore!

New Zealand look a bit soft up front. May just be because they're holding back for the knockouts, but last night I got the impression that a big pack could bully them.

Tonga DID bully them. it was scary.

Wrote this preview on another site last night for the Australia-Wales game

Where things stand
It's the penultimate battle of Group A; The Group of Death! Australia and Wales coming into this in a winner takes all where the winner will avoid a Quarter Final match up against South Africa in favour of a matchup against Scotland or Japan. After England became the first hosts in the history of the tournament to go out at the group stage both sides have taken significant scalps albeit Australia the more impressive team in their win. Wales also haven't beaten Australia since 2008 so a significant psychological barrier will also need to be overcome.

The Teams
Folau is the major injury concern on the Wallabies side, although named in the team he didn't train today (Friday) but they remain confident he'll be fit to start. Elsewhere, after Hooper was suspended for rucking without binding last week, he's replaced by Sean McMahon who is another groundhog like Hooper who alleviates some concerns that the Green and Gold would miss Hooper Dearly.

With Wales still depleted due to injuries sustained before and during the tournament, they make six changes to the team who won a hard fought game versus Fiji over a week ago including a first start for Gareth Anscrombe at full back. What a first test match to make your debut there. Elsewhere, Samson Lee and James come into the front row, Charteris starts in the second row and George North joins Jamie Roberts in the centres.

Predictions
Based on their respective wins against England and the fact Australia have had Wales' number in the past few years, anything less than a win for the Wallabies is unseeable for me at least. A little like the England game, Wales just need to stay in it as long as possible, let Biggar kick his goals and hope that's enough. The battle of the respective backrows will be relishing, with probably the best backrows in the world on the ground; Warburton and Pocock in battle.

Fun Fact: In their last 3 meetings, it has taken a late score (74th minute, 78th minute & 79th minute) to win the game for Australia.

Australia 27 - 17 Wales
