I fancy Wales' chances against South Africa after today, though. SA still favourites, but Wales have pushed beyond expectations today.

if aussie ends with a try here this will be a comprehensive demo on how to play rugby

Well it was a good match and pretty even stuff all the way through. A lot of spurned opputunites for wales though. Could have won but didn't.

kiwis - france or ireland

That was a match of heroic defence. Australia didn't cross the line once. Wales crossed three times and were held up every time.

Duh, beaten by seconds.

Gonna be bloody hard for Scotland. Going to need to be a lot better than we were today. Wales by no means played badly. What a set of quarter finals we have on our hands.

A game of fine margins. The tiny knock on as we crossed the line (which was debateable). The possible issue of a third yellow card etc. Just tiny things separating a good team from a very good team.

George North looks so out of place in the centre. Great finisher but isn't any sort of distributor and looks wobbly in defence in midfield.

That was a World Cup winning defence by Australia. Can even the All Blacks beat that? I honestly don't think so.
the mental game will make it different. NZ attack would have been a LOT more brutal than what Wales put on there

As a part time Rugby watcher (and very disappointed England are out), this world cup has been full of amazing games. Whether it was Japan beating the Springboks, Wales' comeback against England, or the Australian defence today I've never seen such an entertaining tournament.

What has made the tournament so good is the fact that the emerging nations are no longer massively terrible. They can now upset teams or run them close. The game has become much more rounded and better. Also the better level of reffing thanks to good use of the TMO etc just makes things better.
Also this tournament feels very open this time as no seems to the unbeatable. The all blacks look vulnerable in certain areas, the aussies look good but can be beaten, SA look beatable, France...well who can say which french team will turn up at a game, Ireland look okay but not outstanding, Wales are, as we have seen, beatable but are well drilled and tough to break down, Scotland are very beatable but you never can tell. It's an open tournament. I think any of the so-called top teams can be beaten.

Agreed. I am expecting a number of upsets in the quarters and semi-finals due to the quality of all the teams playing.

I also think that the best teams have made it through, without question. I know that might be a bitter pill for England to swallow, and yes they were very close to Wales in their game, but I don't think they put up half as good a fight against Australia as Wales did today. England shrivelled when their backs were up against the wall, whereas Wales grew. The Group of Death sucks hard (for them), but that's the way the cookie crumbled due to how groups were decided, and England did not rise to the occasion. And with the way they've been playing, South Africa would have made easy work of them in the quarter finals.

The top two in every group deserve their place. One notable absence is Japan, who I feel very sorry for, but no matter how you slice it the Scots were better than them overall and deserve their progression.

And now for the carefully-scheduled prime-time Saturday victorious lap of honour by England that wasn't ...

Well, that did't really go well for Wales.

It could have ben a lot worse though as Australia are still my favourites for the championship by quite some way...at the moment. I really don't like to lose but when you're beaten by a team that really deserved the victory, I have no issues with congratulating them.

Will be interesting to see how many injuries there will be for both teams after such a tough match.

South Africa v Wales should be very close, looking forward to that one immensely.

Main aim for Scotland is that we really give the Aussies a game and don't die wondering. If we do that then I won't mind the scoreline too much.

I didn't even intend to watch the Samoa/Scotland game earlier, but found myself put in front of it anyway, and how glad of that I was. 100% neutral in that game -- I'd like Scotland to make it a Celtic Quarter Final, but I'd also like to see Japan get there to raise more support and enthusiasm leading into their hosting of the 2019 World Cup. Yet I got to see an amazing game of rugby out of it; pure spectacle. What a delight. It would have been Samoa's game were it not for their virulent ill-discipline, but I loved how I could lose count of the tries.

I caught most of Australia/Wales, in particular with that marvelous ten minutes of thirteen-man solid-wall defense. The better team won, but I really hope neither side left feeling especially disappointed -- it was an amazing performance by two teams at the top of their game.

Oh, and I caught the end of the England/Uruguay game. Schoolboy stuff, no competition. It got embarrassing to watch after a while.

I'm disappointed to see there are people in this thread supporting France over Ireland for tomorrow's game. Many teams have suffered for underestimating Ireland -- learn from history! While my confidence in them is shaken after last week's game, I'm sure the same team won't play tomorrow. While France may win with a characteristic 85th minute drop goal, Ireland are the better team on paper and will make it tough for France.

I think you've got us confused with England mate. We win games with last minute drop goals ? Since when ? lol

Honestly we have a shit team this year but you never know when that french flair might wake up again. I remember the last world cup where we ended up reaching the final. For the sake of New Zealand, I hope they don't play us in the quarterfinals. We all know how it usually ends up :)

So many foul Six Nations memories. The scars you guys have left...you've no idea!

Both teams have a lot to fight for tomorrow, of course, for the greatest prize -- not facing the All-Blacks.

France has played pretty badly at this world cup. If they can't beat Ireland (and I think at this point Ireland is the better team) no curse in the world can save them against the AB.

I reckon Wales can get the Boks.
Lets not forget Wales got across the stripe 4 times. If not for some amazing last gasp efforts and a knock on hey could have put 30 on Australia.

When the Wallabies were down to 13 men, I thought the game was done. All Wales had to do was run it out wide but instead they bashed themselves up against an incredible defence. Any other team in that ten minute period would have scored repeated tries. Biggar doing the macarena cracked me up.

I feel for Japan. In my opinion, they deserve to go through to QF. They got screwed over by the 3 day turnaround from their match with SA and the Scots took advantage of that.

Good start from Argentina (and a quiet day in the shop so far so I can sneakily watch it). Looks like this one will run true to form.

It's a shame that not all matches get broadcasted over here. Rugby is a bit of a marginal sport in the Netherlands.

I remember the tribulations I had to go through while living in Amsterdam to try and watch Six Nations matches...until it turned out one of my Welsh neighbours had BBC1.

I would always remember those difficulties when the city would swell with red-wearing Ajax supporters and politie, and proceed to shake my head and weep softly.

Bit unfair on Namibia that. Argentine attacker slipped and fell in to the arm of the defender, defender yellow carded for high tackle.

EDIT: And Namibia come straight back with a try! Woohoo!

EDIT: And almost did it again - this game's getting lively.

EDIT: Oh well, it's all Argentina now - 24-7 - nice while it lasted.

If only the BBC had bought the rights:/

Dammit, Liam Williams injured and out of the tournament. That's two fullbacks and three centres gone for Wales.

Good start for Romania. Except for the game against Ireland our scrum was really good at this cup.

Edit: spoke too soon. The defence is still very bad on the sides.

Edit 2: now the scrum is gone too.
