Seems that EA isn't done killing off their own studios. Codemasters may be the next studio to be shuttered. What a shame too. I loved Micro Machines for the NES and the DiRT series. More studios getting killed off by EA after they acquire them is just awful. Bullfrog, Westwood Studios, Visceral, Pandemic Studios, Danger Close...the list goes on. Most of what Electronic Arts acquires just ends up getting closed while scooping up the IP's it seems. Side note....I wish they would go back to their roots from older generations ago. Skate or Die 1 & 2, Road Rash, Skitchin', B.O.B., and so on.

Imagine getting into a bidding war and paying $1.2 billion, only to shut the entire studio down in 5 years.

i guess they jsut wanted the IPs?

F1 25 could be the last Codemasters game and the end of the franchise in the hands of Electronic Arts.

According to LinkedIn profiles of employees of Codemasters Southam, the former studio behind the previously canceled WRC is now working on EA Sports FC as a support studio. Per Insider Gaming's Mike Straw, EA is planning to merge current F1 developer Codemasters Birmingham with some other EA studio. Codemasters Cheshire has already been quietly merged with Guildford-based Criterion.

Mass Effect has to be a major success to save them. They cannot do it though because of the ideology they will inject in the game. EA would be smart to get the original writer in, pay the doctors to consult some and spread the project around to multiple studios. They should also hire a director that is not obsessed with identity politics. They probably cleaned some house when DA failed. But the ideology is infiltrated and running through the gaming industry.
 
Codemasters is a massive name to lose.

So much history that the Americanisation of the history gaming has left many people ignorant of.

Their work in building gaming into what we know via the 8-Bit home computers in the UK must never be forgotten.
 
Sad but it's not a surprise. I hope that the core team manages to come together after the layoffs and make a successful comeback in the racing genre.

MS, Bethesda and Activision are crushing it. Lot of great games.

Mid-Tier: Focus has been building a name for themselves, and 505 Games is hanging in there. Hoping Annapurna can rebuild.

EA pretty much has always sucked.

Had so much fun with their games throughout years, playing their games in split screen was a blast during PS1 and PS2 days. Even in X360/PS3 era, Dirt was fun in split screen.

More recently Dirt Rally was great. Sad to see it came down to this.

Also their games used to have great intros that are etched in my memory.

They are? Doom, Redfall, and Indiana Jones all flopped. Only W is Oblivion which was outsourced.

And I disagree that EA always sucked. Dead Space, SSX, NBA Street, Syndicate, Mass Effect, etc were all great. Even Ubisoft used to be good and now they're barely hanging on.

Crushing what? MS studios are producing same stuff. Starfield sucked. Avowed was meh. Indie was good but seemed to have underperformed. Doom is underperforming as we speak.

I mean yeah CoD is alright as usual from financial perspective, Forza Horizon 5 is doing well, and other ongoing suspects (Sea of Thieves, etc), but what new games out of MS are crushing anything?

I dunno man. They're all super corporatized now, and their downfall has made way for a ton of great games out of Europe:

  • Clair Obscur
  • Tainted Grail
  • KCD2
  • STALKER 2
  • Atomfall
  • Lords of the Fallen (after many updates)
  • Blue Prince

We've also gotten huge numbers of people playing indie stuff like Lethal Company, REPO and Schedule I, and on the AAA side lots of great stuff still coming out of Asia too.

Let the big NA pubs burn, they made their beds. Sucks for studios that got acquired though, it's not really their fault.

But we're certainly not without many great games to play.

I don't care about sales. I care if they make good games. Sales are up to the consumer, and I have nothing but contempt for most mainstream consumers. Complete idiots for the most part. EA has had good sales for many years and they're terrible.

I feel for Codemasters, so many awesome racing games in the 80s,90s and 00s, they were the ones for pedal to the metal. And they also developed the Game Genie too!

As always, obligatory FUCK EA.

Not sure if this studio counts in the list of "teams that have the name but are hollow shells of their glory days" like Bioware, Bungie etc.

My only real experience with them was Micro Machines and I loved that back then. Maybe this is more proof of how tough it is to make money from racing games.

I'm never getting my Burnout sequel am I?
 
Would actually be a fucking shame if this happens. These old UK studios have major history in the industry and it's been pretty sad to watch them slowly go away over the years. I hope CM still holds in.
 
I think in general, successful intellectual properties in all media are undervalued, especially in our media. There's been a lot of acquisitions, but the thing about acquisitions is that the only time it works is if you've got an intellectual property that can succeed without the people...

Well I wouldn't say they're crushing it if their games keep flopping and they keep suffering layoffs and studio closures.
 
Codemasters have been around for almost 40 years. Absolute legends in the gaming industry.

Would be a real shame to see them close up shop after so many years.

Now I'm reading that the studio Surgent Studio that made the game was shut down last year. :(
 
This is one of those cases where everyone cries and goes "FUCK EA!!!", when the writing was on the wall for years that they were a declining company who hitched their entire wagon to a genre which has receded in relevance. Between that and their technical incompetence, it's no big shock they are going under.

Not surprised. The last good F1 game was F1 2020. And before that was 2013.

Braking Point is lame as fuck. F1 Life and supercars were a novelty and a waste of fucking time. They can also shove the Pitcoins up their asses.
