I hope this means their going to bring back the 15-17 inch Apple flat screen.
Forcing you to spend at least $1299 if you want an apple monitor is ridiculous.

If you go to http://store.apple.com and click on "Displays" in the nav bar on the left, you'll see that Apple sells several CRT monitors made by 3rd parties. Of course, you can always buy one cheaper just about anywhere else. And the whole point of a headless Mac is that Apple isn't "forcing" anyone to buy any particular monitor.

Also, one of the rumor sites said "The unit will easily plug into any display or television", emphasis mine. Could it be Apple's positioning this as a media center PC?

What kind of media center PC don't include capture equipement or enough horsepower to do encoding in MPEG2 or MPEG4?

It's $500 and Apple people. Let's not get carried away. ;)

looks like a p-p-p-p-powerbook to me.

imo the problem with jobs' apple is that he isn't willing to just put out a well engineered well supported product for a reasonable price. he needs to add some flashy bullshit to everything and then constrain is nasty ways to keep the user reigned in and under control.

Performance hasn't really being an issue for a while in the PC space.

Those at the high end want all the performance they can get. And they can get a shitload.

But those who want to surf, e-mail, message, do a little wp and the odd spreadsheet there is no real need to have anything much advanced from about 2001 processor tech really. Performance for the net is far more dependant on the speed of your connection than anything that might be in the PC. People can only type so fast so u don't need blasting performance for wp and spreadsheets.

Gaming - Lots of people have consoles for games and that does them for games.

It will probably have enough performance for those everyday tasks and if apple can sell them good for them.

Those of u who are performance snobs, get over it.

1.25Ghz G4 and 256MB of RAM for $500? :lol
Only Mac fans would think that's a bargain.

I remember 1.25Ghz G4 benching about half the speed of 2400+ Thoroughbred Athlon XP on Photoshop. Would anyone in their right minds pay $500 for a box with 1.4Ghz Thunderbird Athlon with 256MB of PC2100 in this day and age?

Do you REALLY think anyone buying this is going to be doing anything more than day-to-day web surfing, e-mail, and running Office? Not every computer out there needs to be judged on how fast it can do something in Photoshop; not every person shopping for a computer is looking for a work horse. They're looking for something that will help them do their work well.

Wow. If it's an Apple answer to the Windows Media Center PC, color me at least interested.

So is Apple going to sue all of GAF or just the people who posted info in this thread?

They're suing the rumor site ThinkSecret.com for two reasons: 1, to try to get them to divulge the person or persons who provided them with the info; and 2, because Apple claims that ThinkSecret.com promised rewards (of some unspecified nature) to any insider who would provide them with information.

So no, Apple won't be suing GAF or anyone in this thread :)

Well it's cheap....at least by Mac standards. Though obviously you get what you pay for (slow CPU, hardly any RAM)...

You do realize that RISC processors opperate much more efficiently than CISC processers right? 1.25 Ghz in the Mac world is quite a good deal faster than 1.25 Ghz in the PC world.

While true, RISC and CISC purity has long since lost its meaning. Each of the architectures now has a good bit of each others strengths in it.

Those pics are fakes, BTW. There are tons of people picking stuff apart on them (among them: obvious bits of tape, paper coming off the box, "Centre" instead of "Center", etc). Me, I reckon it's fake just by the grainy shots alone -- funny how UFO sightings and "leaked" Macs are always shot with the shittiest cameras around eh? :)
