PS3 needed to be cheaper upfront, there's no question. What Nintendo did with their "bull**** move" was ensure 3DS didn't become another PS3.
Bingo.

Yeah, an arcade stick for Smash Bros sounds terrible. I hate using digital inputs for games with analog control.Smash Bros. does use analog inputs.

And those two things are at direct odds with one another, so you shouldn't discuss one without consideration of the other unless you want to look horribly myopic. What you want is irrelevant when it can't be obtained.
Expectations without accounting for feasibility is ridiculous.
Have we discussed what prompted the move from slidepads to analog sticks? I can almost guarantee it was at the request of developers with early dev kits. Slidepads just don't make sense if you aren't concerned about portability. It's a tradeoff for sure, and I'm very thankful that (I'm assuming) developers spoke up and demanded that they use analog for a home system.
When Nintendo advertises the Wii U, what will they focus on? I guarantee it will be the controller. That is what will make or break the system. That is their new gimmick. The least they could do is to include a quality screen that is competitive with the screens of other devices released in the last year or so. I am not concerned with Nintendo's financials because I am not an investor. I am a customer that is interested in purchasing their hardware and software. Whether they're going to lose money including a quality screen isn't important to me.
Based on E3 hands-on impressions, it doesn't seem like anyone actually had any major complaints about the performance of the slide pads. So perhaps Nintendo was persuaded to change it in order to avoid future criticism over its seemingly unnecessary design choice. If you're going to use dual analog, then why choose an alternative solution if it's just going to make people complain about it for being different and potentially alienate some gamers who just want traditional analog sticks ?
I just see a clusterfuck of controllers for the Wii U.
Personally i would have been fine with cirlce pads but going with analog sticks is a good idea in that it gives "hardcore" gamers one less thing to complain about.
I would bet money that they originally chose circlepads because they require less space inside the case and allow the device to be slimmer and lighter. But after a lot of testing it was determined that they needed to make the device thicker and more ergonomic to allow for more comfortable long-term gameplay, and doing so took away the reasons to use circlepads, so they replaced them with analogue sticks.

Isn't the dpi confirmed to be better than the iPad2 screen?
Don't even bother, dude. ClovingStream thinks anything less than Retina is total garbage, despite the fact that less than 10% of consumer electronics, notebooks and computers included, actually use them.
Lol where did I say that? Oh, I didn't. I said that the screen on the Wii U controller isnt impressive and it isn't.
You just want the screen to be as good as an iPad. Even if it was, people would complain about how expensive the controller is. You just can't have both an iPad screen and a reasonable price for the regular consumer on a controller.
And? Where did I say I am worried about that? I have said multiple times that I am not worried about Nintendos finances nor others.

Nintendo dont care that you would be willing to pay hundreds of dollars for a controller anyway, because people like you are not in huge numbers....so say what you want, you'll never get it, because they have better things to worry about than pleasing people who want the best tech in the world no matter the price, as you have probably noticed since the Wii and the DS.
Where do people get this sense of consumer entitlement?
Well, this IS an era where $5 for a complete downloadable content-rich game is considered too expensive for many folk.
Heh, you underestimate the cheapness of some people.it is?
I don't get what you guys keep saying what some of us want would be too expensive when we don't really know how much the console and controller costs (to produce it). I know I'll get laughed at by saying this but Pachter believes the controller should cost around $50 to make and although I'm not saying I agree with him, I doubt the price is much higher than that tbh. Also, I doubt they spend much on the console either since it's not a very powerful system anyways (at least for 2012 standards).
So you want an HD capacitive touch screen and a system as cutting edge as possible and you think that it won't be expensive to produce? And how much would a replacement controller cost?
Heh, you underestimate the cheapness of some people.
Personally I would prefer a multi-touch resistive touchscreen but I do admit that it would be too expensive.
And? Where did I say I am worried about that? I have said multiple times that I am not worried about Nintendos finances nor others.
Exactly. Personally. I don't know when gaming became a crazy tech race and it became less about games. I don't even need the WiiU to be crazy powerful. I just hope it gets high profile third party support for the rest of its life. If that happens it'll be my only next gen console.

It will, until the NextBox arrives
Yeah, people act like the graphics of today are an eyesore or something and are always looking for visuals to be pushed.
I'd rather they graphics get marginally better and the game ideas progress.
And that's what really worries me about the system. If it can't run next gen engines then that will be the case and we'll see a Wii 2.0 situation. But if it can...
You guys are in the minority though (well, since this is a Nintendo thread, you will be in the majority). Gamers want graphics to keep moving forward. PC gaming is already ahead enough to make console games look slightly dated, and if the Wii U has similar graphics to PS3, then 3 years from now the games will look like an eyesore, compared to PC games.
I couldn't disagree more but to each their own.
Metroid Prime still holds up well for me visually to this day and it wasn't even a game from this generation.
And that's fair. But Nintendo being concerned about their finances is the reason they've outlasted all competitors in this industry thus far. So, unless you and those like you can offer a terribly compelling reason for them to jettison concerns of their own profitability, I imagine it's best to keep your expectations a bit more conservative. Who knows: You might just like what they offer whether it uses the fanciest tech available or not.
One game won't hold gamers exclusively to that console, if 90%+ of the games look better on PC or another console, core gamers will probably play on those, and third party will follow.
