Rumor: Next MacBook Pros to have OLED touch strip, Touch ID in Q4

I picked up a new MB a few months back and returned it after two weeks.

USB-C is just way too inconvenient even when using online storage for backup, it's just too much hassle.

Was hoping the next MBP would be out by now and they'd be decent enough to include at least one standard USB 3.0 plug (and looks as good as the new Macbooks).

Will probably ignore it if it doesn't, even if it has fancy F keys.

Just bought 2015 pro retina. I like it a lot, should I even consider returning it for the new one?
Like everyone said the new ones will be a brand new redesign. So if you really care about that then I would if you can hold out. Hopefully the new rumor is true and they do cram all the events into one day next month. I know I'm really eager to see the new model. It'll be my new machine next year hopefully.

First Machines Using Kaby Lake Processors Coming This Fall, but MacBook Pro Not Likely Among Them

"Intel often launches low-power 4.5W Y-series chips and 15W U-series chips first, neither of which are suitable for use in the machine that people are most curious about, the MacBook Pro. According to an old Intel roadmap, Kaby Lake chips appropriate for use in the MacBook Pro, the iMac, and the Mac mini won't launch until the very end of 2016 or the beginning of 2017, meaning any Apple machines released in the fall of 2016 may be limited to Skylake chips. "

We don't know anything yet. Let's wait until we get more information from IDF.

Not really used to following macbook releases, but will the current non-pro macbook lineup see any price shifts with the release of the new pro line in the fall? I am thinking of getting a macbook (portability is key and I don't think I will do much on the pro to justify it) and just wondering if I should wait. What is the likely hood the new pro weighs under 3 pounds?

I really hope these things get announced soon, my current MBP is going to shit.

what year?

I just realized that my late-2013 (bought in 10/13) MBP's battery isn't so hot anymore. It's not terrible if doing light tasks, but full brightness using Lightroom for 1.5 took almost half the battery.

I'm interested in the new models but probably won't bite unless there's a price drop compared to the current models.

It's a 2013 model, forget when exactly I got it and I'm not by it now. The battery is fucking awful and the screen doesn't always work properly. If there wasn't a big refresh coming soon I'd probably just buy a new one now.

Same. I have a mid-2011 and the battery is getting noticeably weaker. On my wife's 2014 Air we could watch a 45-minute episode of something on Netflix and her battery will have only gone down 3-4%. For me, the batter would go down the same amount just bringing up netflix and starting the episode.

My MBP is still a fucking beast, but I might sell it and get a new one depending on how much a 2TB model is (if they make one)

If you're talking about the hard drive, why not just install one on your current MBP yourself?

They are different product lines, MacBook price will not be effected by the release of the MacBook Pro.
Hardly the new MBP will weight under 3 pounds.

I have a 512GB SSD on my macbook pro (15" retina mid 2014). I thought upgrading SSD's in the Pros was a hassle.

Either way, I'll probably still want to upgrade. My model will have good resale value for a while.

That would most likely mean switching to ARM processors.
It would improve battery life and make an iOS/MacOS merger possible but am not quite sure Apple wants to break compatibility with everything on the Mac side(including Windows).
At the same time I don't think custom ARM chips would yield the performance benefits Apple wants.

There has been rumors of a switch to ARM for years, but they simply do not have a level of performance adequate for their Pro line. I would not be surprised if the Macbook ended up going ARM and cut off support for Windows along with non-app store applications.

The Mac App Store is too much of a fucking wasteland to do that (and it's not like App Store apps are automatically recompiled for ARM either - most stuff on the store would be incompatible).

Damn I'm pretty interested. Was just going to bite on a new laptop but now I might wait. As long as these are reasonably priced I might just have to get one.

My 2011 17" finally bit the bullet this weekend, so I'm due.

Just wish I knew how long I'd have to be relying on my work computer and my iPad though... not having a personal computer is a bit of a pain, but there's no way I'm buying one of the current models with a major refresh around the corner.

Indeed, but its the only situation where this switch would make sense. There seemed to be more noise about this a few years ago and information about this has kind of run dry.

My 2010 15" Pro is still chugging along but it's getting really long in the tooth. Hopefully they get these put soon (and without a big price increase) so I can retire this oldie

I'm still pretty happy with my 2014 rMPB, but am super curious to see what theses babies look like.

I have one of those too, but I'm interested in getting this since I really cheaped out by getting a 128gb 13in. I really need more than that, and having external hdds all around ain't fun.

Yup, that's what I got. It's perfect for me, though, as I have a separate windows desktop and NAS at home. So my rMBP is just for travel and when I'm needing to get stuff done at a coffee shop or browse the internet/do productive things from my couch.

Still though, TouchID and that OLED strip sounds sexy.

Hmm, I think I am put off the macbook (non pro) for now. The 13" air looks good and my wife loves her 11" air, but macrumors says not to buy right now. Is there a chance the air line gets new CPUs during whatever even the MBP gets dropped?

it's possible, though the current thinking is that when the MB gets powerful enough, they'll ax the Air.

I've said this on GAF before, but I think Apple's near term goal is 12"/14" MacBook, 13"/15" Pro, discontinue Air.

I think Swift is helping to lay the groundwork for this (Apple needs to get to a point where just recompiling will do it for 95% of developers) but Apple fixing the Mac App Store (which, really, has the same quality issues as the watch app store and the tvOS app store and even the quality of iPad apps) is also absolutely a prerequisite before they can jump to ARM.

I don't think it's impossible whatsoever, and I wouldn't be surprised if there are internal ARM builds of macOS, but it's definitely not happening in the near future or even within the next five years, I think.

I think you are right about Air getting dropped. Real shame that all the MB's are m chips and not i chips right now. I just can't stomach that price for a low end cpu. Ugh, now I am looking at XPS 13. I fucking hate laptop shopping. Just give me a PC to build any day.

How are you all going to buy the upcoming MacBook Pro 15 2016, or 2017?

Discover has a 5% cashback promotion, but terms and condition says that it can't be used for pre-order. :(

What promotion is that?

EXCEPTIONS: Apple Watch EDITION, pre-orders/pre-sale orders, iTunes, limit 5 units per eligible product, limit 2 iPhones within 30-day period, 1 to 1 Membership, EPP, Bose, gift wrap, gift cards, returns and exchanges, taxes and fees

Does anyone know of a cheaper way to get the new MacBook Pros? So far I got this and Education discount.

Yeah, my mbp is all I got. Would love to have a gaming PC but I feel like upgrading this is better.

The ideal dream is this supports external gpus and I can have both a gaming PC and mbp in one without any internal gpu.

Tempting, but I don't want to open another credit card just for that. I'll just buy it with my Apple Barclaycard, 3% back is fine

My late 2010 MBP is in serious need of a reboot.

What price are we thinking for the full bells and whistles one here? £2,500?

Anyone here use a Mac book pro for after effects and premiere for video rendering? Coming from an iMac but thinking I want to go portable this time round.

I'm expecting similar prices as now, so I'm budgeting around $3200 before AppleCare and tax

I'm going to buy a refurb rMBP 2015 to hold me over, especially if the rumors about a November release are true. Even if it comes out in October, the demand is going to be insane and supply might be more constrained than I'd like

It's not impossible, it would just be a pretty big performance dive comparable to top-shelf intel chips.

There are most definitely ARM builds.

I do (well not lately I guess) on a 2013 15" MBP and it runs decently, though I don't do anything too complex.

These new models should have a very nice processor + graphics card bump for more power.

A switch to ARM would require way too much notice ahead of time and would break so much stuff.

The intel switch worked for a few very specific reasons...

1. Intel could emulate PPC really easily without much slowdown because it was already much faster.
2. PPC emulation stuck around for a few years to give devs plenty of time to port to Intel.
3. Most PPC apps worked out of the box right off the bat without problems due to this fact.
4. Another benefit was straight Windows support and virtual machining instead of emulating.

Due to this it was another successful transition to go with the Classic to OS X switch and the previous 80xxx to PPC switch. An ARM switch just wouldn't be nearly as smooth.

ARM does not have the luxury of being able to emulate Intel as fast. And even if it was restricted to App Store apps it would be a long time before all apps update. For reference just look at SteamOS/Steam for Linux. The MacBook would end up being more limited than it already is. It just doesn't make any feasible sense right now.

Plus yes, you'd lose Windows support too. Apple would be dumb to drop this now.
