I think 2GB for a console is fine, drives will be faster and games can still data stream.
Psychotext said:Oh yay, we're at the part of the gen where people start unearthing random rumours about next gen machines.
Likely the only part of this that's right is that Microsoft is indeed working on a new xbox.
[Nintex] said:There's more talk about the new Xbox lately than there is about the Wii U. Microsoft is going to bury it if Nintendo really waits for E3 2012 to show anything new.

pottuvoi said:Going by 8x increase of memory from xbox to x360 the 4GB would have been the expected memory amount if Xloop would have been released a year ago..
If it will be released in winter of 2012 with 2GB of main/unified memory and some embedded ram on GPU, it will be a disapointment.
2GB means that we can forget about games which would push envelope in terms of lots of AI entities and world interaction.
I would have loved a proper sandbox game with persistent world where stuff actually does happen outside players field of view.
Well, perhaps the next gen kinect games are good then..
Globox_82 said:Even if release date is 2013. Somehow I don't feel sure that gamers have the money to pay for a new machine that is 399 + .Even 299 is too much for most of the people. Let's not forget that 90% of COD players are little kids. I doubt they have 500 bucks lying on the side of their beds.
Sony is in even trickier position compared to MS. How big leap PS4 has to be over PS3 to make sense? On top of that how expensive will it be? Just imagine 599 console in this economy, which will most likely get even worse, both in USA and EU(look at the crisis around Greece and soon 3rd largest economy in EU - Italy. European Union is in danger)
Hard times.
AI has not been bound by hardware for a decade. It is all software, and programming AI is simply hard to do.Globox_82 said:Yup. Just imagine Oblivion game that has 4gb + ram to work for their AI. Amazing.
It's not really about what you show but you have to keep it in the media. It could be as simple as having Sakurai's cat sleep on one to get it in the news. Just, you know 'anything'. Games would certainly be a plus but tech demo's are also a possibility, third party multiplatform games being announced. Like when Ubi dropped the Assassins Creed III announcement, Nintendo should've stepped in with a PR saying: "Ubisoft's multi-billion dollar franchise hitting Wii U in 2012!" just keep the name out there. MS will blow up every small detail about this new device.Nuclear Muffin said:Well, historically Nintendo like to show off new stuff at GDC; so I would expect something new about the Wii U in March (final hardware/controller design, online plans detailed etc - but the games themselves won't be shown until E3 2012 I reckon)

Diprosalic said:question for the tech guys:
a good gaming PC is way more powerful than an xbox we all know that, but they are limited by xbox ports, if the new xbox comes out and has better graphics can the PC just match it because it had power to spare?

I hope I am wrong when it comes to consoles.
They must be aiming for a $350-$450 console. They cannot go overboard with RAM because it's one of the most expensive components of a system, and I'm taking about XDR and the likes, not the ones we normally use on the PC. 2GB is quite enough, and I'll assume they will go with a fast drive this time, so it should be a potent combo. Same goes for Sony's console. MS should be looking at a long product life cycle, so the specs shouldn't be disappointing.Shadow of the BEAST said:no they didnt. 512 was alot back then and the natural upgrade compared to previous generations. 8 times the memory of xbox and 16 times that of ps2. Huge upgrade
2gb or 4 times the memory in 12, 13 or 14 is pathetic.

Globox_82 said:I dunno. I think Nintendo rushed to show Wii U. They probably hear a lot more stuff then we will ever hear. Wii U E3 demo was so dry and looked so early. That Zelda demo, was just tech demo. I know I heard the guy from Nintendo in one of youtube vids say something like "This is just to give you a perspective of how it would look". So that means that either they haven't even started working on new Zelda, or it is very very early.
Lets not go overboard.[Nintex] said:There's more talk about the new Xbox lately than there is about the Wii U. Microsoft is going to bury it if Nintendo really waits for E3 2012 to show anything new.

Was it really?liquidspeed said:( PS3's RSX when it was announced was twice as fast as Nvidias best card on the market)
Doubt they are going to use blu ray. And pay Sony for every disc they sell? More like proprietary technology. WiiU will do the sameJarmel said:A blu-ray drive is damn near guaranteed. They would be flat out insane not to put one in.
In terms of using memory it still is, I have yet to see a game on consoles with ~100-1000 AI entities which interact with each others in a game world.Drkirby said:AI has not been bound by hardware for a decade. It is all software, and programming AI is simply hard to do.

They'll have to pay the Blu-Ray group, which is more than just Sony. They'll just use a Samsung BD drive and be done with it. Sony's probably paying Microsoft for every device that runs Android anyway so it evens outGlobox_82 said:Doubt they are going to use blu ray. And pay Sony for every disc they sell? mocoworm said:I already made this comment back on page 1. I definitely think they will run with a proprietary disc format. New discs are already available with much more capacity than Blu-Ray. Plus, this would completely eliminate piracy.

Majanew said:The next Xbox needs to include Blu-ray. It's the HD standard for movies now and will be for awhile. Hollywood fully backs it and sales are good. No sense in MS letting Sony have another feather in their cap with PS4.

MS wants Xbox to be the go to box for whatever you want to do. Not including the HD disc standard is foolish.Globox_82 said:It's not like it made much difference between PS3 vs 360 or are people really that fast to forget?
It is more about streaming these days anyways. BR is not a big deal imo.
ZombieFred said:What disk format would that be, that can be bigger than blue ray? (don't know this area at all)

I think that he refers to the 6800, the Nvidia deal was announced much before the PS3 launch and before the 7700/7800s were on the market so the comparison was with two 6800.Rad Agast said:Not true, it was comparable to a 7700 in performance. That's what I remember from a long thread at B3D at the time.
