They tried, but got screwed on the rebate forms.clashfan said:Actually couldn't MS get cheaper prices then newegg because they are buying in bulk?
-ImaginaryInsider said:Didn't the original launch 360's allow for size/budget of 10 chips...and that's about the same size/budget expected this generation? 3gb of GDDR5 would put it at 12 ram chips, so it's probably unlikely.
Yes, but the 360 had more than 5x as much RAM as the Wii, and people want that to happen again! The low amount of RAM and the lack of programmable shaders were that main things preventing Wii from getting ports, and Wii U already fixes the second problem. If the first is fixed too, the dreams of crushing Nintendo once and for all will die, as Nintendo will be able to hang on in that case.-ImaginaryInsider said:Last time I checked the WiiU rumor thread, the performance was supposed to be better than PS3/360, but not a full generational leap from those consoles, has something changed? Even if they have the same amount of ram, the designs of the two consoles could be different enough due pricing and design philosophy to have completely different levels of performance.
Personally, I want exactly what the 360 did, a console that balances power with price, it wasn't as powerful as the PS3, but it was close enough it didn't matter.
AnnSwag said:I don't think we'll actually need anymore RAM, because it's a console. GPU's are more important anyway, because we already get amazing looking games on current consoles.
But then there's reasonable people."RAM is not important" is what people ALWAYS say before a new generation. Then 2 years pass and everyone is complaining about the lack of ram and how could they release such a gimped hardware lol
That's why large edram is needed too.Everything is better without jaggies, they need to eliminate those first.
I doubt GPU eDRAM sizes are going up. Don't see Sony starting with that again. Could even see Nintendo dropping their eDRAM solution. Microsoft probably will keep it. They'll need it for solid BC.
2 gb is too little after 7-8 years.
It simply isnt a generational leap. And whatever they put in else where will be hampered by the meagre ram budget.
Anything below four gig(either unified or separated) is a huge disappointment.
I sure hopes wii U is closer to sony and ms this time....
i just can't see them bringing this out around halo 4's release, that'll need one hell of a marketing budget.
That's what I'm saying: "free" AA is on its way out. It's never been free anyway. Great anecdote just popped up. If it was free, why did Ubisoft just opt out of hardware AA on Xbox 360 with the latest Ass Creed game, this far into the gen, when they should have everything figured out? They need to go up if they want the so called free AA. 10mb wasn't enough on the 360 for a 720p double buffered frame and hopefully we'll be going 1080p next gen and not just 720p.
Dream bigger! We clearly need 6GB!
Seriously, you'll still get your eye candy to drool over. The speed of the RAM is more important.
Well, Wii U "only" having a tri-core is pretty much confirmed, and total RAM is most likely 1GB, so... :/
That's why large edram is needed too.
Also yummy smoke, hair, clouds, and other things.

Post I was making before the site went down.

I think 2GB fall in line with MS ram upgrade plan
2001
XBox 64MB
2005
Xbox 360 before Epic stepped in 256MB = a 4X upgrade in 4 years
retail Xbox 360 512MB = 8X upgrade in 4 years
2012 / 2013
Xbox 3 2GB = 8X upgrade of Xbox 360 B.E (Before Epic) & 4X upgrade of the retail Xbox 360 in 7 - 8 years
so I'm guessing that without Epic pushing for 512MB MS would have released a new Xbox in 2009 & this would be the Xbox 4 in 2013
2001 xbox 64MB
2005 Xbox 360 256MB
2009 Xbox3 1024MB
2013 Xbox4 4096MB
but thanks to Epic they was able to push the Xbox 360 for close to 8 years instead of 4 & instead of upgrading 256MB by 4X in 2009 to 1024MB , they will be upgrading 512MB by 4X to 2048MB in 2012/2013.
It doesn't work like that. 4x/8x are not some mandatory ram upgrade patterns that they need to follow. If they can use GDDR5 ram that is as fast as Edram, just one gigabyte of it in a console is better than 8 GBs of GDDR3.

I didn't say it worked this way, I said I think it falls in line with the pattern that MS would have been going with if Epic didn't push for 512MB in the Xbox 360.
Its not just about eyecandy. As we have seen this gen more and more games are open world. Open world games need more ram.
Not sure about that. If you can avoid needing to stream in data from the hdd or optical disk with some slower but bigger pool of ram it could actually be a better choice. But im pretty sure microsoft is talking to AAA devs about their requirements and probably listening to the main engine creators like Epic and Crytek the most(probably 70% of the games will probably use those engines next gen).
Segaleaks have updated their spec sheet.

Apparently MS realized, from gamer feedback the last few days, that things were too expensive, so they decided to dial some components back a bit.

Even whilst using the revolutionary and no doubt costly PowerVR RTX, Sega is still targeting a $299.99 launch price point for it’s next generation home video entertainment platform.
Latest news suggests that SEGA SAMMY is willing to take a hit per unit sold in order to build a commanding lead before the arrival of Microsoft’s XBox 720 and Sony’s PlayStation 4.
Both systems are expected to struggle against Sega’s as of yet unnamed console, as they shall lack the necessary on board circuitry for real-time ray tracing. If Sega also undercut’s them on price, then Sega may find themselves with a market monopoly.

What pattern? they only released one money-losing console before the XBox 360 which they killed because they were never to profit on since they didn't own the crucial parts (the cpu and gpu).
The Pattern where they upgrade the ram by 4 , epic talked them into pushing the 360 to 512MB so the 360 lasted longer, & instead of upgrading 256MB by 4X in 2009 they will be upgrading 512MB by 4X in 2012/2013.

Some knock off Chinese Blu Ray instead of actual Blu Ray? No local storage?
Where do you keep pulling that Xbox 3 in 2009 with 512MB? Even if the 360 only had 256MB...claiming they would've released another Xbox so soon just so you can do your "pattern" talk is silly and based on nothing other than.
I'm still suprised that people are so attached to PR statements by MS, even mentioning in every thread. Yet, they rarely talk about these statements. Funny.I think I know where onQ123 gets his idea for the XBox 3 in 2009. He probably got it from Kaz Hirai.
This thing sounds like a piece of shit. Some knock off Chinese Blu Ray instead of actual Blu Ray? No local storage? Cloud streaming is fine for music and acceptable for movies, but terrible for games.
The console industry has been taking steps back regarding storage since the SNES. They've gone from fast carts to slow CDs, slow DVDs, slow Blu Rays and now we'll have to stream shit over fucking wifi. By the next, next generation save games will be chiseled onto stone tablets.

Yeah some of these new specs don't make sense.
China Blue High Definition disc drive? Cloud storage only? Really?
The CPU and GPU updated specs make sense, but the storage information seems shady.

BS rumors made to get hits. Don't expect new hardware any time soon from either Microsoft or Sony. That's assuming there's any credibility to these rumours.
