To be fair that wasn't a downgraded version. It's actually superior to the original console release

Yeah, good point, but it was downgraded compared to the contemporary PS4 and X1 versions, agreed?

It's probably not the best example, in all fairness. It wasn't really meant to be taken seriously.

Looking forward to playing Witcher 3 at 240p/15fps. But hey, at least I can do it while taking a dump!

Not sure what´s quicker, the switch loading the game or your "overcooked rotten banana from the past" saying hi for the first time while attempting a salto mortale. :F

I'm certain that The Witcher 3 with the lowest possible PC settings would still be too much for the Switch.
Just bring on the freaking gwent card game. They'll lap it up for $60.

That's not how software engineering works. You are dealing with concrete technological limitations, you can't suddenly magically make Crysis run in 3D on an NES just by "changing your mindset".
No, but Crytek did get Crysis to run on a PS360 when everyone said they couldn't. I say it's possible.

The crazy thing is, you see, it does both. Crazy, I know. Not sure why anyone would want that. Must be fanboys.
It remains a handheld console though, with the power of a handheld. I know it's marketed as an hybrid, but at its core it remains a portable, it doesn't magically turns into a powerful home console just because you can hook it up to your tv, it's a portable that can be connected to the tv, not the opposite, and that's quite a difference.
I'm not saying it's necessarily a bad console, but it is what it is, with its advantages if you want a portable experience, but also definitely its limitations.

Can't see it playing reasonably well on the current Switch, but I do wonder if the revamp Switch coming out next year will be able to play it.

By now everyone who wanted the game would have gotten it. I don't see why releasing a severely toned down version would make it appealing. I don't even know if nintendo fans are excited about it or even know about the game much to care. They need to market it properly to sell the game and not just release it with no hype behind it.

Switch has like 20-30% of xbox s performance, so no way without losing all that makes it a great game.

Beauty of the world is big part of the experience and if it would look like a someones first unity project, just sad.

the switch is not powerful enough.

as much as i'd love it i'm not getting my hopes up. if it does come to switch it will be 720p 30fps with major visual downgrades. shit i'm only now able to play it on PC with a solid 60fps. the game is super demanding even after nearly 4 years.

if this is a legit rumour though, its interesting if true. Never in my wildest dreams would I think Witcher 3 would be possible on the Switch, but I said the same about Doom as well and it blew my mind when I saw it on the Switch

Maybe there's a Switch Pro around the corner that changes this conversation.... ?

Well, my guess is:

If they really want to push/sell the revision version of the Nintendo Switch what better way to show of some or any hardware improvement like trying Witcher 3? My fear was if this move could make the '3DS vs new 3DS' scenario when some games just run in the new 3DS and I really hated. Thx god this never happens with Xbox X/Ps4pro.

This could also be one of those Japanese only releases where the game is streamed like they did for the Nintendo Japan version of Assassin's Creed: Odyssey.

Well, Skyrim was originally released on PC and PS3/xb360. It is older than the WiiU. This alone should make it runable on the Switch with a bit more eye-candy because of the better GPU (compared to a PS3/Xb360 GPU), much more ram and with a multi-core CPU compared to the scary PS3-CPU (one cpu-core and seven … well "sometimes really helpful but not always"-cores)

The Witcher 3 themed switch on there looks like someone took the first 3 pieces of concept art they found on Google and photoshopped them onto a switch.

If it turns out the be true though I'd expect it to be some sort of Streaming version of the game. The rumours are coming from Asia and if I remember correctly the Switch has had some games available to stream in some Asian markets

People can be excited about literally anything as long as it's on switch, I don't understand it either.

This.

I own a gaming PC, I own a PS4, I will buy a Switch for the new Animal Crossing...... I have zero reason to be getting "hype" about a 4 year old game I already have over 100 hours in, on better hardware with stripped features, downgraded performance etc. Even if I didn't have all that hardware, how much could I even like The Witcher 3 if in 4 years I also didn't buy any hardware to actually play it?

Oh but....lets get hype for the worst version? I don't know about all that. I don't plan to buy much 3rd party ports on Switch if any.

But you can play it on the bus to work dude!

If you traveled a lot, you would understand. There are plenty of games I have never played that would interest me on a 5 hour flight or 4 hour train ride. Granted, they may be pushing it with the Witcher 3, unless it really is made for a Switch 1.5

I travel often... I see no reason for me to waste time with titles that I can play on PC or PS4 with better settings and performance, then missing features and downgraded just to play on the go. I even skip films I'd want to watch at home or on the big screen when I'm on planes.

Why would I want to watch one of my favorite film series on a 7" screen, low res etc? Soooooo why would I want a AAA experience missing so much quality simply to play on the go? I mean...I didn't use the PS Vitas streaming feature for a reason, I don't game on gaming laptops for a reason etc. Has nothing to do with "if you traveled a lot" I do travel a lot, doesn't mean I want any playthrough of a AAA experience ruined simply because I "could" play it in some form.

I also want to play it on a big screen, surround sound, features intact and the best quality I can. Its why I play stuff like Animal Crossing on the go often, its not a experience in which I'd care isn't on the big screen or quality or anything of the sort. So I don't mind stuff like party games, puzzle games, simulations etc on portable as they offer very little that I'd NEED to be watching on a big screen.

its not saying the content is bad, its saying there is a time and place for many based on what they want to see and where. I want to play Witcher 3.........NOT on a phone, not on a tablet while on a plane bud. Its a great title, when I'm at home focused, on a big screen, surround sound with great quality. Apply it the same with film, tv etc. For many its easy to watch their favorite reality show on a plane, they might not want to watch their favorite Netflix drama on a plane or a new entry to a film series. So its not as cut and dry as many of you keep trying to pretend it is.

I don't get the anger I'm reading regarding the possibility of this game coming to the Switch. Some people never played Witcher 3 on Xbone or PS4, and some people never even owned either console or have a PC that they even game on. Some people don't share the concern with only having the best audio/video experience for a game and are more than happy to take the hit if it means they have something to do on a plane, as a passenger in a car, or stuck in an Atco trailer working at a job site for a month. The game is a great game so why wouldn't those people be interested in having a chance to try it?

I own no multiplats on my own Switch, I just buy Nintendo's games and indies that look good but I can see why people would be excited at the possibility of playing a good game they didn't play yet.

That's just mean you have enough time for yourself to spend at home. Again though, it's just one of the many reasons, not essentially the one.

With heavy cutbacks and optimization, it is very possible and would still look great, though much less appealing than the other versions of the game. People seem too quick to jump to conclusions given the simple architecture modern consoles use.

The real question is would the returns be worth the effort to optimize the game to begin with. In many cases with late current gen ports, this is not the case. However Witcher 3 I feel would sell very well on Switch, so it is all in what the devs feel at this point.

Personally I would not be suprised if it happened, but do not expect it to in the end. I would definitely be one to pick it up though, despite having already beaten it on PS4.

Yes, yet there are people like myself that traveled so much last year that I was never home, and when I was it was to wash clothes. Therefore, the switch got me back into gaming. Being able to play games on the go was awesome.

Thats nice. Thats up to you to choose that as its up to me where I choose to experience certain titles.

Stuff like Lumines, Animal Crossing, tetris etc I don't mind on the go.....

I'm not wasting a cinematic experience on a 7" screen. If you want to do that, sure thats up to you, but not everyone clearly is going to want to play ALL content that way, its just unlikely.

"I was never home" Even if I was rarely home I still wouldn't be out here looking to play titles I'd prefer at home, on a phone or tablet or portable etc. I'd simply play those smaller titles on the go and leave those at home cinematics for at home.... I never needed anything to get me back into gaming, I never left.... I game on PC, console and portable when the title actually suits that device aka logic.

Seems very difficult without some severe concessions. However I would be very interested in it to check it out.

That's just mean you have enough time for yourself to spend at home. Again though, it's just one of the many reasons, not essentially the one.

Not really, it means I value the game I'm playing enough to actually play it at its best with the 4K tv and surround sound I bought for a reason. When I buy a Switch, it will be for the same type of content I prefer to play portable while on the go.

I'm not going to be looking at some 7" screen on a title that is requiring a full 100% level of engagement and respect in terms of quality. I can get away with playing Animal Crossing on a plane just collecting fruit and fishing as anything I have to stop, isn't going to hurt that experience, I don't see me playing something like Horizon Zero Dawn on a plane having to stop at a cut scene or pause dialogue just to do something. Time and a place bud.

Look at film, I don't know how many LOVE Star Wars SOOOOOOO much, yet lets just watch the new entry on a 7" screen and its our first time seeing the film. That is just massively unlikely. Its not just the ability to play, it is the nature of the content playing. Most are not going to ruin their first time of anticipated film by watching it the worst possible way. HOW that content is delivered is just as important as the content itself. That experience is why folks might go the the theater, or watch it at home on UHD 4K etc. Most won't care if they watch something like Youtube on a phone or tablet.

Some content folks are fine with portable.

The Switch already has very decent ports of Doom and Wolfenstein so I frankly do not believe W3 would be as much of a challenge as everybody here is saying. The rendering pipeline would have to be approached differently, textures degraded, some NPC models replaced with lower-poly versions, as well as prioritizing the rendering of effects over resolution - Panic Button made Wolfenstein go as low as 360p. I bet it'd still look pretty decent on a small screen.

I'd never buy it - finished 3 times on PC and have it on my XB1X for a future replay - but I could see it having a market.

Unpopular opinion: A 360p Witcher 3 isn't worth it.

They should just shelve it for the inevitable Switch+ announcement, because I would absolutely buy a new Switch to play the Witcher 3 at a native 720p undocked with a locked 30fps. Otherwise, pass.

decent ports
Well this depends on the person's point of view. I find these games unplayable because of the low framerate and the awful blur. I'd rather take Dreamcast games in 1080p/720p@60fps than PS4 games in 360p@20fps + blur.

I have a hard time believing that people are being honestly excited about playing a downgraded port of a soon to be 4 yr old game.

Oh my sweet summer child, what do you know of ports? Ports are for the Resi 4 and Skyrim fans, where the same game drops on every format, for years at a time. Children are born, live and die owning multiple copies of each. This is the time for ports, my Little Lord.
