Ukraine has plenty of problems, corruption, graft, etc, but they have a democratically elected government and that government wasn't committing systematic acts of violence internally or externally, nor were they violating treaties then were invaded by an aggressive larger nation for no purpose but to expand the larger nation's territory and that aggressor is committing war crimes most likely by policy (soviet tactic). If the Russian army withdrew today, peace would be restored, on the other hand, if the Ukrainians lay down their arms and surrender the population will be at the mercy of the wolves, I'm sure there'd be mass executions, mock trials, plunder, mass rape, and a thirsty power monger turning hungry eyes toward other sovereign nations.
Now if Russia stands down, I would oppose the Ukrainians seeking revenge, the good guys treat their defeated enemy better than their enemy treated them because that's what makes them the good guy.

A few weeks ago when the Queen died many people here celebrated that. This country was torn apart by decades of violence. You could say that was due to partition by the British government. I had family who were severely injured serving in the army.

I can empathise with the people who were fighting against them as if you look up the way catholics were treated here, it was wrong. I am not making excuses for what the IRA did, it was abhorrent, it has caused massive grief in my own family to this day and I’ll carry a lot of that to my grave.

All I’m trying to say is that all war is awful. People here saying they should destroy Russia or every Russian should die, should take a long hard look at themselves truly.

The longer this war goes on the lines get blurred as to what really started it. Northern Ireland is at “peace” now although has many active paramilitaries still to this day. Violence is but a minute away. It could flare up at any point, mark my words there is deep seated sectarianism still here.

But the vast majority of people have moved on, and that can only be done through reconciliation and healing. Yes, people should face justice for crime they have committed. But here we chose to release those prisoners under something known as “the good Friday agreement”.

This war is on a much larger scale, I’m not comparing the two, I’m just trying to say

I can't speak for others here, but I am well aware of The Troubles. You should well know then that the borders stayed the same after those decades of violence, mostly driven by the IRA.

It's not the same between Ukraine and Russia though. The similarities are only between the self-declared republics and the Ukrainian state, but the major thing happening in Ukraine is another country invading, something that never happened in Northern Ireland. Northern Ireland was also ultimately between two countries that really didn't want to be fighting each other. In case you hadn't noticed, that war ended in the 1920s.

So, as to why a negotiated peace that doesn't see at least all Ukrainian territory returned is just not a good idea:

• It's just not right.
• Letting another state seize the territory of another state risks setting a dangerous precedent.
• It would embolden other dictatorships with their eyes on other territory.
• Russia are known to have interest in territory beyond Ukraine, and there are countries with significant Russian populations. If they gain from this, they almost certainly will try again sometime.
• Now, so much damage has been done to Ukraine that they simply won't accept no recompense. Peace alone is not enough (not that it would likely be a lasting peace).

In case you hadn’t noticed, it didn’t end in the 1920s, hence civilians were still getting blown up in the streets as soon as the turn of the millennium. I’ve lived in a conflict zone (albeit a small one, apologies again for it not being as huge and grand as what we are seeing today in Ukraine and my opinion doesn’t matter) and seen the damage that it does to families and lives.

You’ll also know the most recent census has shown an increase in the amount of people seeing themselves as Catholic in this country. A border poll will happen probably within my lifetime and we will see if the border remains, time will tell.

I suppose everyone in here would still have Germans paying heavily for WW2. Before you come back with smart comments about how they’re still financially paying and their army is limited. I KNOW!!! The same thing should happen to Russia when they finally stop being cunts. They should never have a military again.

The cause of the fire was a power surge due to which the coke oven gas blowers were turned off.
